Naomichi Marufuji

Sneaky contender for #1?

He really has become Mr. NOAH, a constant top star from Day 1 to the present.

Probably a touch underrated as a draw and torch bearer for the promotion. Completely overrated as a worker. If I was completely ignoring everything but ring work, he probably wouldn't make my ballot.

This will be a heated thread. Many fall in the armsofsleep camp that Maru stinks, and some of his lazier chop happy performances where he clearly doesn't care don't help that rep. To me, he's got too many classics under his belt to ignore, and is one half of the best tag team in company history (and one of the best teams of all time, period). Throw in that he's Mr. NOAH, and a constant main eventer, and he'll surely rank high for me.

He will definitely make my list.he has too many classics , ,is always reliable as a draw and is usually always the noah representative in other promotions.

I probably wont be in the "he sucks" camp, because like you guys said, the good stuff that he HAS had is almost undeniably good. I think he's a good wrestler actually. He just isn't really my preferred style.

Also, if you are at all considering drawing/importance to the promotion, it's pretty much impossible to keep him out of the top half of your ballot anyway.

He may be my #3. If you're still in the camp that he's no good like a lot of people were not too long ago I would recommend watching all of his tag matches with Maybach this year and his singles match with Kiyomiya in January.

Best Marufuji singles match in NOAH guys?

An absolutely insane thing about him - scanning my MOTY Tracking Lists since 2007, and it looks like at least 18 of his 20 best singles matches are OUTSIDE Pro Wrestling NOAH. Between G1s, his run as IWGP and AJPW junior champ, and ROH the majority of his best singles work is away from the Green Mat.

For the record it's probably Oct 31 2006 vs KENTA but I go back and forth in thinking that match has major flaws.

I love the KENTA matches. All of them.

With that said, I came away from your post cracking my knuckles ready to list a bunch of bangers, and aside from the KENTA bouts...you're right.

Non-KENTA recommendations:
vs Misawa 3/3/2001
vs Takaiwa 12/9/2001
vs Taue 3/5/2006
vs Kobashi 4/23/2006
vs Akiyama 9/9/2006
vs Misawa 12/10/2006
vs Akitoshi Saito 9/9/2007
vs Morishima 9/9/2007
vs Misawa 9/29/2007
vs Akiyama 1/24/2010
vs Kanemaru 7/10/2010
vs Sugiura 11/23/2012
w/Minoru Suzuki vs Takayama & Omori 5/11/2013
vs Sugiura 6/13/2013
vs Sugiura 10/19/2013
vs Nagata 7/5/2014
vs Nakajima 7/21/2014
vs Sekimoto 10/12/2014
vs Sekimoto 11/7/2014
vs Nakajima 10/18/2014
vs Sugiura 12/6/2014
vs Yoshinari Ogawa 12/23/2014
vs TAKA Michinoku 2/11/2015
vs Kojima 1/10/2015
vs Minoru Suzuki 3/15/2015
vs Minoru Suzuki 5/10/2015

Probably wouldn't make my top twenty favourite NOAH regulars (hell, I might not "like" him as much as someone like Izumida) but I'm not sure there are five people with a better resume/body of work. Have to think about where to place him.

lots of very good matches there but none I'd call a MOTYC in any of those years.

I don't know where he will place. I am still in the "not very good" camp overall for him including the tag run stuff from this year. I saw the heaps of praise thrown on NOAH at the start of the year and came away with thinking that most of it was good but not spectacular.

I just watched the Takaiwa match from 2001 and even tough there are some things that I didn't like about that match the way the crowd is invested into the possibility of Marufuji winning is just amazing. They buy into all the nearfalls and shiranui gets a reaction like it's a deadliest maneuver ever. I really need to dig deep into some of this Noah, but right now he seems to be my No.3 after Kenta and Kobashi just because he has way more outstanding stuff than Morishima and he has been more solid over the years. Also I always prefered his style to Sugiura's.

I haven't paid attention to much of Marufuji in NOAH for the past couple of years so that's something I have to watch before seeing how he places on my list. My gut reaction is to put him in my top 10 cause of his tag work with KENTA and the breakout year he had in 2006 where made the switch to heavyweight. It was a failed experiment but fun to watch and you could make a case that it ushered in a new look for heavyweight wrestling in Japan as it mixed the junior style a lot. I know a lot of people hate that style but it's lasted for a while.
