1990 and 1991 Watch List

Post by Robareid » Thu Dec 31, 2015 5:42 am

Wasn't sure where to throw this, it didn't particularly fit anywhere. Feel free to move it.

Anyway, basically since I'm a relatively new wrestling fan there's A LOT of wrestling I've never seen. Well as a result of that I've been working my way through wrestling history in one enormous watch project, in which I'm currently about to hit the 90s. I'm always worried I'll be missing stuff though even with me doing a bunch of research, so was wondering if some of you could do me a favour and look over the list I have set up for 90 and 91 and let me know if I have any glaring omissions from this time period which I need to watch.

Rob, I have question for you. When I heard the other week that you we EIGHTEEN, I nearly fell over. I assumed you were 40 from the wrestling knowledge you appeared to have doing the trivia. When did you start watching wrestling and when did you moved from WWE to more niche stuff like indies and Japan? I get the impression with the internet being what it is, people make that transition alot quicker now than when I did.

That's a remarkably complete list. I can't think of anything I'd add, at least off the top of my head.

I first properly started watching wrestling in 2010 at the Royal Rumble (at that point I was 12, nearly 13) although I have recollections of seeing the Royal Rumble, No Way Out and Wrestlemania in 2008 but no inbetween TV.

I joined my first wrestling forum (ewrestlingnews) in August 2010, then expanded my viewing horizons later that year to include TNA when I started watching them with Bound for Glory in October. I then added ROH to my viewing schedule in December 2010 when the first thing I watched was the HDNet episode which had the Edwards-Daniels TV title switch.

I was introduced to New Japan with the G1 Tag League in December 2011, followed by PWG with BOLA and DG with the Summer Adventure Tag League both in August 2012. I then added the rest of the puro world to my watching in October 2013 (although for DDT and NOAH I went back and started at the beginning on 2012 due to the NJPW connection) apart from All Japan which I started in September 2014 and Stardom which I began following in August 2014.

Finally I got into BritWres at my first live show in June 2014 which was RPW's Summer Sizzler.

I started doing star ratings in late 2011 and have kept track of them since the very start of 2012. I started writing for VoW in July 2014, joined wrestling twitter in September 2014, started podcasting July 2015, was invited to join MLW this October and left a few days ago.

So I basically spent about six months a casual but have only been a super hardcore for about a year and a half.

You're only 18?! I also thought you were an old man. I mean that as a compliment. Anyway, I noticed there isn't any Memphis/USWA stuff on the list. Things like the Chris Adams/Steve Austin feud and especially the Lawler/Snowman feud come to mind for 1990. If you're interested I can cobble together a timeline for you.

Without really rolling my sleeves up, the list looks shockingly complete. I'll take a look at some notes I have later today and post if I see anything missing.

When I was in my "consume everything" stage, tape trading was still the only way to get stuff not on TV. A steady supply of 4-gen All Japan VHS tapes was like striking gold. Amazing how much times have changed in twenty years. It's a great time to be a fan.

Yeah, I'm EASILY in the most convenient time ever to be doing this.

Oh, and I've been getting the "I thought you were way older" since I was like twelve on forums. I think it's because I have the grumpiness of an old man.

As for the Memphis stuff, basically I get very little out of all the Lawler stuff I've seen, I think I'm just too far removed for it to click. I can't get into punch brawls. However the Austin-Adams stuff sounds intriguing, if you have a couple of recommendations I'd love to add them in.

Very much so. It used to be very hard to find a lot of the 90s stuff in high quality (or even reasonable quality!) and I'm still blown away whenever I look at the New Japan World archive because there's a lot of stuff on there I searched for what seemed like an eternity to find.

Ha, I know that feeling! I'd just assumed you were my age (24) or a little older than I am.

For Adams/Austin in 1990, I'd say 5/25, 6/8, and 8/3.

You really need to check out the Snowman / Lawler stuff at the start of 1990. Honestly, I'd look at seeking out the PWO Yearbooks.

I'd second the Yearbooks, they are a treasure trove of content and really help frame the years in question.
