No.2 promotion in Japan

Post by rollup » Thu May 10, 2018 2:51 pm

i know Dragongate has been seen as the no.2 promotion in japan , but is it still ? i think there is not much discussion on twitter on this so i thought i would discuss it here.

Personally i think there is a case that DDT is or will be the no.2 for the foreseeable future

DDT and Dragon Gate are the ones battling it out for that position IMO. both have much better infrastructure in place than AJP and W1 and money coming in through various side businesses. DDT's new owners are rich as hell as well. But Dragon Gate run more bigger shows. Fallout from the recent shake up in DG will likely shape the landscape for years to come.

No.2 promotion in Japan

I'd say DDT is the second biggest in Japan cause of them being sold to CyberAgent. Their shows are always on AbemaTV for free in Japan, so a lot of ppl watch them. New Japan was the experiment for AbemaTV as they showed a lot of their big shows there for free before the DDT purchase. Dragon Gate might run bigger buildings but they're still in their own little world and it's because they've done it for years. DDT has always been the little indie that could and always do stuff for attention. Now, their wrestlers are starting be on more Japanese TV shows like New Japan has been doing the last couple of years. I don't see that with DG.

DG will likely be most people's default answer to this question for years to come because most people don't pay attention, but I think there is definitely a case to be made for DDT now for the reasons mentioned above. If you only look at raw attendance numbers DG is probably ahead (although their fake numbers make it hard to tell, and the WON recently reported that attendance for DOA was way down this year), but taking into account infrastructure, visibility, mindshare and such, DDT has to be significantly ahead, at least outside of Kansai.

Especially against DDT, I can't really see an argument for AJPW

(I personally voted DG based off of their current standing, but can see DDT blowing past them in the coming year)

No 2 is whoever got the most tv slots (more viewers) and better attendances in k-hall and can draw 6000 plus in sumo hall. And the most sponsers.

I'd like to see how the next few big DG shows do, but DDT is clearly making a push. DG still has the edge in Korakuen on everyone. There really isn't much of an argument for anyone else.

Do we count DDT's off-shoots like Ganbare, Basara, and Tokyo Joshi Pro?

I voted DDT.
