ECW on the WWE Network thread

Post by Mike » Fri Feb 19, 2016 3:20 am

Yes it's butchered to hell, but there's some great stuff there. And now with 98-00 TV coming out for both the regular TV and TNN shows, there's some good stuff on it's way to the Network soon.

One thing to keep in mind is TNN was AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL with editing matches with commercials. Impact was bad too I remember, but TNN would cut away a lot.

Just a few TNN match recs based off a list I did a few years back rewatching some of the earlier eps.--

Ep 4 has RVD/Lynn from the Arena that is hot as shit. That ep has Super Crazy/Tajiri too.

Ep 6 has Mike Awesome vs. Rhino. Awesome is a guy where he's maybe in my Top 10 of all time ECW guys just because, even with his short stay, he was an absolute animal. And him as the Champion was tremendous.

Ep 9 has Awesome/New Jack and Rhino/Sabu in Sabu's TNN debut.

Ep 11 has a really, really good Crazy/Tajiri/Guido three way and The Sandman's return, which is incredible, but is edited due to Metallica playing the entire time. Watch it here instead

Ep 12 has a good Tajiri/Crazy match

Ep 15 has Crazy/Ikuto Hidaka

Ep 16 has a good Awesome/Scorpio match as well as a HOT Corino/Dusty segment

Ep 18 is the Christmas Eve show with a great Awesome/Tanaka match in front of a hot crowd in Nashville

Ep 19 has the rematch that is not as good, but it's a fun watch

Ep 22 has a really nutty Tajiri/Crazy Mexican Death Match - and you can check if the Hardcore TV around this time has the Japanese Death Match they did like a week later

This was the ECW I watched as a kid. I was in Toronto and it was the only time it was on my cable system. Really fun to me, I understand some ppl say ECW was on the down swing at that time but I loved watching Tajiri, Mike Awesome and especially Masato Tanaka.

I'd recommend the Guido/Tajiri/Crazy three way match from the Rave. I don't remember the date but that match was pretty rad.

New Jack vs. Mike Awesome is so fucking great. Also the Christmas Eve Awesome/Tanaka match might be my favorite match of theirs. Only ones that really come close are N2R99 and ONS2005. I have a strong attachment to ECW on TNN because I really cooled off watching wrestling as a kid after Goldberg lost to Nash and Owen Hart died. The ECW game (yes i know it sucked) was the whole reason I knew ECW on TNN existed and the first episode I saw had Tanaka vs. Awesome as the main event and that match blew my friggin' mind.

And now I really want to dig out the old DVDs.

Those three, along with Rhino and Rob Van Dam, were my favorite guys.

The Rave is an awesome building. Wish someone would run there now. Hardcore Heaven 2000 from there is a really good show and it's made better with that crowd being into everything

I think 94-96 ECW has a ton of great memories and very personal connection to those who at that time were there for it all going down. But it's 99-00 where the in-ring was the best in the company's history.

And wanted to mention quick- watch the first two minutes of the 12/5/98 ECW TV and try to wrap your head around the fact that the same woman in that intro is the same one that no one wants to see in a porn.

Also, I SWEAR that they are dubbing in Fonzie's whistle noises over RVD's edited theme song. It's very odd but funny.

The Balls vs. Tanaka match from 9/19/98 (might be 9/18 too, I'm not sure what date they have it labeled as) Hardcore TV is a recommended watch as well. It's a bit before the TNN era but I was blown away but how great that match was.

The two TNN title changes between Awesome and Tanaka always stuck with me.

Also the night Raven returned.

The first shows from Hammerstein. The tag title tournament that Mikey and Tajiri won. Them losing to the FBI next show. Kid Kash winning the TV title from Rhino. Credible vs Corino.

The last TNN episode with the 3-way dance between Credible, Corino, and Lynn. I always remember the commentary more:

Styles: So they're changing their name to The National Network and their slogan is, get this, "We've got pop!"

Gertner: Well its better than their last slogan.

Styles: What's that?

Gertner: "We **** pigs."

I don't have the emotional connection that others do to 94/95 ECW, so I've always preferred the TNN era. Loving these TNN episodes so far. Episode 3 has a really fun Lynn/RVD match in NYC and then as Mike mentioned, they have that great match in the Arena on the next episode.

Need more Tajiri on these shows. He's been excellent every time I've seen him. Loved him before I started binging on these, love him even more after.

Forgot to mention that third ep, which kind of gets forgotten in the grand scheme of things because you had Raven's return at the end of episode 2.

Originally, they had shot the pilot in Toledo for the TNN show in the 8/21-8/28/99 HCTV episode (you can notice the obvious entrance and better lighting) but it was really flat and Paul E went with the Madhouse of Extreme for the first shows after the intro debut.

1998-2000 episodes are still being added, as I've noticed some gaps in 1998 are finally filling up. As I've told Rich before, I want to try to make a complete guide to all these episodes for the board/website so newer fans can know what is good.

I think ECW is my favorite promotion, just above WCW, but I'll be the first to admit that the 94-97 era is not really a MUST WATCH. But there's some good stuff there. It's really the whole build to Heat Wave 98 and then from there where things really hold up a lot better.

I've noticed some getting added here and there so I'm going to chill for a little bit and wait to see all gaps filled before I jump fully into ECW on TNN.

That guide would be super helpful

As far as TNN, what we are waiting on as of this morning-

Episodes 5, 9-12, 14-15, 17-18 are missing for 1999.

Episodes 21-24, 26, 28-33, 35-finish are missing for 2000.

EP 16 that was just added a few days ago from The Tabernacle in Atlanta has the Dusty angle that is hot and a good Awesome/Scorp match.

Tajiri becomes more of a regular the further into the TNN stuff you get.

Once 5, 9-12 get going I'll start my marathoning as that'll give me a solid enough cushion to go with. Thanks for the updates Mike, excited to see what you can do with this project too!

ECW on TNN will forever be filed under Leave The Memories Alone.

Tried to go back, when I purchased them all on DVD many years ago...made it two episodes in before I just thought it best to be a good memory.
