Never heard of someone wanting to prove that they are a dark horse. It's like saying, "I'm the underdog, and I'm setting out to prove why!"

A dark horse implies unexpected victory or an unexpected display of talent. It's different from an underdog.
Unexpected victory? Sounds like an underdog to me. They are actually synonyms, but that wasn't my point anyhow. Just saying you're "setting out to prove why you're a dark horse" is a good sign you don't really know what that term means.

The underdog doesn't always win, the dark horse does.

Going horrendously off topic here (all my fault), but that is not accurate.

An underdog = "a person who is expected to lose in a contest or conflict."

A dark horse = "a candidate or competitor about whom little is known but who unexpectedly wins or succeeds."

They are not synonyms. Pat Buck is not saying he's setting out to prove he is a person who is expected to lose in a contest or conflict.

Mike Johnson wrote:Interesting to note that we've heard there's been communication over the last few days between WWE and Cody Rhodes, who just departed the company. From what we can ascertain, there's been discussion about the company signing him to some sort of deal similar to their Legends deal, which would allow the company to release merchandise, etc. using his likeness. It may be that they had Stardust, etc. material coming out from a third-party (a Mattel action figure, for example) and offered him a deal so legally, they can move forward with that. There's been no talk of Rhodes returning as a full-time performer as he's seeking to work specific, big matches on the independent level and we've heard he's already being represented in Hollywood for potential acting world.

Observer:
Mark Carrano called Cody Runnels for a legends deal. At this point no agreement has been reached but Runnels wasn’t happy because the conversation was supposed to be confidential, and the next thing you know, there were reports Rhodes had called WWE trying to return
More to this that I'm hoping gets broken on the Voices of Wrestling podcast.

In addition, Cody's agent is apparently still accepting offers after December 2016.

The theory in light of this clarifying info: Cody was released but is being "subsidized" by WWE. He's free to work legitimate indies but due to the payments, must avoid ROH, TNA, NJPW, AAA, and CMLL. The subsidies would explain why WWE and not WWN Live is paying him to work for the WWE-affiliated, WWN Live-owned Evolve.
