VOW Flagship: Alpha vs. Omega, Mixed Match Challenge & more!

Post by Rich Kraetsch » Fri Dec 15, 2017 3:24 pm

A jam packed Flagship this week as we cover Alpha vs Omega and why swapping out Ibushi for Jericho as Omega's Wrestle Kingdom opponent was the right move.

We've got previews of ROH Final Battle and WWE Clash of Champions, we take a look at the 2017 Tokyo Sports Awards, and we break down the potential long term business implications of WWE dipping their toes in the Facebook water by airing Mixed Match Challenge on a social media platform.

He harassed/intimated a writer with pitches to the point the writer complained to management.

If I turn off my good ol' mark brain and think about it for two secs, the double main event schtick for WK12 serves all masters; promo for the global audience and newbie interest in Jericho vs Omega, something for Naito to complain about in promos, something for perhaps even Okada to complain about, something for Naito fans to complain about since this dude gets screwed by the powers that be once again etc.

Fale vs BUSHI may have been bad but boy was it entertaining. If it's an undercard "special singles match", this calibre of weird, I don't mind a total nothing match with a weird angle finish.

If I spend too much time thinking about Ibushi vs Cody, I confess I get irrationally annoyed. I know Ibushi can get a good match out of anybody. I also know they can do Ibushi vs Omega at any point and this kind of builds that story, so it shouldn't be a big deal. But something about it just bugs me. I can't work myself into being hyped about it, no matter how much I try. Like you said in the podcast, Cody will prob retain tonight and they're not gonna put the title on Ibushi. It feels a bit like, what's the point.

Joe 's Solo shows are always much calmer and milder than when Rich is around , for some reason.

Google Trends is an imperfect means of assessing things, but...

Worldwide: https://trends.google.com/trends/explor ... %20Jericho

US: https://trends.google.com/trends/explor ... %20Jericho

Japan: https://trends.google.com/trends/explor ... %20Jericho

I wonder if Jericho and Omega having non Japanese names skews these results at all.

If you search with English terms, you probably only get expats etc. This is the Japanese searches:

https://trends.google.com/trends/explor ... 1%E3%82%AC

Red is Naito, blue is Jericho, yellow is Omega. I did 90 days to show the enormous spike for the Jericho video at Power Struggle - the new angle caused a minor spike, but not a huge one. Mind you, we are only talking 100 searches for that spike. If you expand the search to a year, Naito obviously has peaks in August when he wins the G1.

I don't put a whole lot of stock into Google Trends, though it is fun to play around with. At least this confirms the belief Naito is more popular in Japan, but Kenny leads in the US. I also tried adding search terms like "レッスルキングダム" (Wrestle Kingdom) and "新日本プロレス" (NJPW) but almost nobody searched for Wrestle Kingdom (so maybe they use some other term for it), and the searches for NJPW dwarfed all the name searches, which made the graph look weird. Also, almost nobody ever looks up Okada with the official Katakana spelling of his name, so I don't know if he either never gets searched for or nobody cares about him or there's some wonky other term they use, other than the stylized Katakana spelling.

Did you try オカダ・カズチカ or オカダカズチカ? I tried both and the results without "・" seem feasible.
