Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

SHO vs. luchadors always seems like a recipe for success, and I thought his match with Titan was pretty fun. They did both throw some weak-looking strikes at one or two points, but overall it was a solid opener to the tournament portion of today's show. Ishimori vs. Tiger Mask was fine but it's sort...

Re: Official All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Thread

Ice cold Double or Nothing takes from a guy who just finally watched the show this morning (and who probably would have streamed it live and legally if the pricing had been reasonable)... Overall I thought the show was a home run. For the most part it looked big league and professional, with good pr...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

Lots of good but not great matches on today's show. Taguchi/Narita, Gresham/Kanemaru, Rocky/DOUKI, Scurll/Titan, BUSHI/Bandido, and Shingo/Tiger Mask, and YOH/Phantasmo were all solid but forgettable. Ospreay/Eagles was the clear match of the night, with a good continuation of their ongoing cross-pr...

Re: Getting Into Classic Joshi

Just now saw this... Classic Joshi is what got me into Japanese wrestling back in the tape trading days. Like you, I started on Dreamslam and worked to other events. Until this current era of NJPW, I would have argued AJW in the mid 90s was as good of a promotion top to bottom that has ever existed...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

SHO vs. Tiger Mask was a nice brisk opener. Tiger Mask's last few matches have all played heavily on the grimy technical wrestling that he's so good at, and that plays to SHO's strengths as well. Ospreay vs. Narita was a really impressive showing between the two best performers in the B Block. The o...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

Phantasmo vs. Narita was another good showing for the Young Lion, who has consistently looked like one of the most polished performers in the tournament despite having the least experience. Titan vs. TAKA was just okay. That ending with Titan releasing the pin but the ref counting it anyway was real...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

Holy shit, what a great show today! That has to be the second best New Japan show so far this year, only behind Wrestle Kingdom. Ishimori vs. TAKA was a fun little opener. The short timeframe helped give TAKA's work an urgency that it's been missing so far this tournament. I don't always like it whe...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

Don't forget about the mystery man who is targeting Juice Robinson. I assume that whoever that winds up being will be guaranteed to be in the G1. My guesses for the vacant spots would be that mystery biker guy, Ospreay, Taichi, and Cobb. I'd really like to see Henare in the G1, but it seems like the...

Re: Official All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Thread

I don't get why they can't just have Hangman lose a competitive match to Pac. Hangman never really got past the midcard of ROH or New Japan, so it would seem to me that building him up steadily and getting the audience invested in his climb to the top would be a better strategy than having him immed...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

Rocky vs. Narita and Bandido vs. Douki were both solid but unspectacular. I can't say that I remember many details from either match even though I just watched them, although I was entertained enough by them while I was watching them. Phantasmo vs. Eagles was okay, but it's a little awkward to see P...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

Today's show mostly felt like a house show stop to me. The matches weren't bad or anything, but it didn't feel like anyone except for the guys in the main event were really putting in full effort. This is perhaps understandable since the wrestlers are in the early middle of a grueling tour and perfo...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

It was interesting that today's show, from the same city but a different building than yesterday's show, had a much more responsive crowd than yesterday's despite today's show being a much weaker card on paper. Going to have to correct you there, same prefecture different cities. First show was in ...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

The tournament matches on today's show were mostly strong but the dead crowd kept the show from reaching its full potential. I really liked Gresham vs. TAKA. Gresham's style is totally different than everyone else's in this tournament, and TAKA was the perfect person to allow Gresham to show off all...

Re: Strong Style Spirit - New Japan catch all thread

I actually thought that Douki looked pretty good in his match against Narita today (aside from that awkward inside-out DDT thing that he botched). They got a reaction from the live crowd, which is more than you can say for the Tiger Mask/TAKA A Block opener from yesterday's show. I thought Douki had...
