ROH on HonorClub #183 (September 10) Results & Review

ROH on HonorClub #183 was a much easier watch this week as the show really thrives in a studio setting.
Action Andretti ROH on HonorClub

After an AEW Collision loaded with ROH talent where Nick Wayne defeated Komander, The Swirl lost to The Motor City Machine Guns & Athena defeated Isla Dawn in a ROH Women’s World Title Proving Ground Match, AEW rolled through Athens, Georgia for AEW Dynamite “Rebel Heart,” and then it was on to Jacksonville, Florida for ROH.

ROH World Television Title Match
Action Andretti (c) def. Adam Priest

This is a very cool match, so I don’t “want” to complain but with a little time and effort they really could have built to this. It was the first match out of the gate and had zero hype leading up to the show. Now that I’ve gotten my whinging out of the way, I have to say that the more I see Action Andretti, the more I like “The Sight to See.” He is obviously a tremendous athlete, and he is coming into his own with this new character direction. The match had that clear heel/face dynamic that I like, and this studio audience was firmly behind Priest, with Andretti doing some solid heel work. There was an “Action sucks” chant from the crowd during the match but the action in the match itself did not suck. It was hard hitting, crisp and well worked. Andretti got the win by reversing an “O’Connor Roll” by Priest and getting the pin by using the ropes and pulling the tights simultaneously. I loved the finish, as Andretti should be cheating to beat certain people right now, and Priest is one of those people. Match of the Night

Hyan & Maya World def. Janai Kai & Lacey Lane

It was reported this week that Janai Kai has signed a contract with AEW. MLW fans know Kai has something to add to ROH if used properly. Kai tagged with Lacey Lane here as the burgeoning ROH women’s tag team division continues to be featured. I was a little worried at first as the new team of Kai & Lane were working out some kinks, but things turned out ok and this duo could work if given time. The right team won though, with Hyan & Maya World picking up the deuce in a match where both teams tried to fit a lot in their eight and a half minutes. Not Bad

Backstage, Deonna Purrazzo & Emi Sakura were interviewed. Emi said that she would like to team with Purrazzo in an awkward backstage segment. So, it’s becoming very clear that ROH is about to introduce new Women’s Tag Team Titles. I don’t think that is a bad idea at all if they would just unify the Pure & TV Titles first in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Serpentico & The Colons (Eddie Colon & Orlando Colon) def. Il Cartello Grillo (Hayden Seal, KayJay Impala & Rosario Grillo)

There is a new F.B.I. inspired faction in ROH and for some reason they lost to The Colons & Serpentico. I’m not sure why this match needed to happen, but it did and it was perfectly fine. The Colons & Serpentico got the win with a “Power Plex,” a la Power & Glory but with top rope splashes from both Eddie & Serpentico. Fine

It was then time for MxM Collection to “Chop It Up” with Caprice Coleman & Ian Riccaboni. This was just more of Ian gushing over MxM with a couple of vapid questions from Caprice. These segments really could be a benefit to the weekly program, but not like this. Of course, if you are into MxM and comedy in your wrestling you may have found this amusing, but it’s just not my cup of tea.

Rocky Romero def. Ortiz

The feud between the Don Callis Family and Ortiz, Kingston & Warner rolls on here but this time in singles competition. This match was a perfect example of two pros “pro-ing” as this match went back and forth until Trent came down while the referee was distracted and hit Ortiz with a chair shot to the back on the outside. Rocky followed that with a “Sliced Bread #2” for the 1-2-3. Professional

AR Fox & Soleil def. Body Bundy & Jacked Josh

Bundy & Josh are the current FIP Tag Team Champions and were both trained by Jay Lethal. They are known as Exodus on the indies and got in more than I expected in this 50/50 affair, but the new team of AR Fox & Soleil got the win so do they get a shot at the FIP Tag Titles now? Meh

After the match it was announced that Fox & Soleil would be facing Bandido & Komander next week on ROH.

Backstage, Action Andretti cut a promo claiming that after he beat Adam Priest “clean as a whistle” in his first defense of the ROH World TV Title that he was the most dangerous and honorable man in ROH.

Matt Menard def. Jacked Jameson

Okay, that is now two guys on this show whose first name is Jacked and that has to be a first. Anywho, it looks like Jameson’s fresh start after dissolving the Frat House is off to a rocky start as he loses here to Daddy Magic who got the win with a DDT. This was another match on the show that I’m not sure needed to happen, but it did so let’s move on. Forgettable

It was then announced that Red Velvet would be defending her TV Title next week against “emerging superstar” Remi Reade? Reade is 18 years old and has 1 match in ROH to her credit and that was a loss to Deonna Purrazzo in a Proving Ground Match back in April and now she is getting a TV Title shot and the match was actually announced ahead of time? I have so many questions.

The Infantry (Carlie Bravo & Shawn Dean) (w/ Trish Adora & Christyan XO) def. Alex Zayne & Mance Warner

Before and during the match Alex Zayne could be heard saying “Psycho Sauce” on multiple occasions, so this odd pairing could be “a thing” going forward. Tony Khan sure is hyper focused on forming teams and stables these days. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, it’s only an observation. This match started as a bit of a house show special but got more physical as it progressed. There were a couple of good double team moves from both teams and decent action throughout. The Infantry got the win after hitting Zayne with the “2 to the Head.” This was the best tag match of the night in an ever-growing ROH tag team scene. Decent

Backstage, The Kingdom introduced the man they have paid to join them in their fight against Top Flight, “The Bounty Hunter” Bryan Keith. Because AI told them to? I don’t know.

Zayda Steel (w/ Christopher Daniels) def. Steph De Lander

So, this match started to fall apart a couple of times, but not every combo is going to have chemistry, especially in developmental, I mean ROH. Steel got the pin with a roll up in a forgettable match. I think Steel could really benefit from a tour of Japan, or Mexico, or both. Regardless, I think she will be ok but I would love to see her reach her full potential. Forgettable

Bang Bang Gang (Austin Gunn, Colten Gunn & Juice Robinson) def. BEEF & The Premier Athletes (Ariya Daivari & Tony Nese) (w/ Mark Sterling & Stori Denali)

This was a high energy, entertaining and solid six-man tag match but I can’t help but think that this match should have opened the show and the TV Title match should have closed it, but what do I know? The Gunns hit BEEF with a “3:10 to Yuma” to score the pin. Not Bad

Final Thoughts

I much prefer ROH in this studio setting than in front of the AEW crowds before and after Dynamite & Collision tapings, so this week was an easy watch for me. I am into Action Andretti’s progression and appreciated the lack of The Dark Order on this show as well. Of course, I still believe that almost two hours is too long for ROH and that some of these matches simply didn’t need to happen. So long.
