Watch: Wrestle Universe

The show started with something more poignant and interesting than anything I’d seen in a few days.

We had a public pro test for trainee Rena Takano. She had to complete 13 wrestling maneuvers like pushups, front roll, neck bridges etc, and it was capped off by around 150 squats. When I say this was a riveting watch, I am not exaggerating. This young trainee struggles and goes through move after move, counting each one, as the audience watches with bated breath.

Ich, nei, san, shi, go

These words pierce you as the young trainee reaches her point of exhaustion, completing her squats, the crowd counting with her to cheer her on. She’s getting emotional as she shouts each number, Chihiro Hashimoto and Meiko Satomura among those around the ring, watching her closely.

After she’s physically and emotionally drained from finishing her test, she shouts out her motivations and desires as to why she chose to be a professional wrestler.

It’s incredibly emotional watching her dig deep within herself to complete the test, and then, in her sweat and exhaustion, shout out her innermost motivations and drive.

More than 20 minutes have passed and it was the most riveting and emotional part of the show for me. She leaves to the back where there is a weigh-in and Meiko Satomura tells her she needs to gain at least 3kgs before she can debut.

She passed the pro test.

Meiko Satomura came out to speak about the event and thanked the fans for their continued support of Sendai Girls.

Chi Chi def. YUNA

This was a perfectly fine opener. Chi Chi came out to a good reception from the audience. Chi Chi did a standing split splash on Yuna which looked good. Yuna soon countered with a barrage of elbows and a neckbreaker. She hit a nice top rope dropkick.

Chi Chi won with a spinning head kick which looked awesome. The match didn’t overstay its welcome. **½

Hiroyo Matsumoto def. Stephanie Maze

I like Hiroyo, I think she’s a solid worker but this was a nothing match squeezed in to the show. Stephanie is okay, at best. Matsumoto had to work down to her level in this short match.

Stephanie was angry as Hiroyo pulled her hair, she unleashed a barrage of body punches, and tried to throw Hiroyo by her hair, but Hiroyo, demonstrating the strength in her hair, threw her instead.

Stephanie’s movements were uncoordinated and didn’t look the most convincing. Her best offense were her kicks, which looked good, given she has a kickboxing background. Hiroyo put her away with a face lock. **1/4

Bob Bob Momo Banana (Mio Momono & Yurika Oka) def. Yura Suzuki & ZONES

ZONES immediately jumps off the screen as someone with a great look and potential to be a future star. She was the best worker in the match, and the match picked up when she was tagged in.

Okay, so the fruit gimmicks are fun comedy filler but they are good wrestlers in their own right. They got their little comedy spots in before ZONES took over. She has great offense and hits snug elbows. Momono hit three consecutive running dropkicks on ZONES to change the tide of the match.

We got Yura in with Momono. Yura is the youngest of the wrestlers in the match, and it showed in her offense and her movements. Momono used a fisherman suplex, and an airplane spin slam for a 2 count.

After Yurika and Momono teamed up to remove ZONES from the ring, Momono pinned Yura with a La Mahistrol cradle. **3/4

Chihiro Hashimoto & Spike Nishimura def. Anita Vaughan & Safire Reed

One of the weaker Hashimoto matches I’ve seen in the past few months. Anita & Safire are fine, but clearly a couple of levels below someone the calibre of Chihiro.

This was an okay middle of the card match. Anita & Safire got some good double team moves in before Chihiro tagged in to demonstrate a clear level difference in the wrestlers.

Chihiro got a nice stalling suplex on Safire. Anita and Chihiro were the highlight of this match, then went at each other with lariats and shoulder tackles. This was good.

Then we got Nishimura in, and Anita and Safire quickly turned the match in their favor. Nishimura botched a springboard dropkick which looked rough.

Nishimura eventually got the pin on Safire with a Double underhook facebuster. ***

Sendai Girls Junior Title
Senka Akatsuki (c) def. Miku Kanae

Best match on the show. Senka continued to impress with her unassuming but effective style.

Miku Kanae is one of the best babyfaces in the Joshi scene. Her underdog fire and desperation to win comes off as authentic and makes you want to root for her, even when you know, she’s probably eating the pin.

It was a strong showing despite the little time they had. I’m sure more people are now aware of Senka since Wrestlemania weekend, and she continues to impress.

Senka took control of the match early with a running splash and a slam. Miku did a comeback with a top rope dive and a pair of running dropkicks. She locked in a really tight looking side armbar with her legs interlocking behind Senka’s head.

Senka transitioned seamlessly from a pin attempt to a Boston crab, and Miku’s struggle to the ropes got even more people behind her. There was a great struggle over a suplex attempt which Senka eventually hit on Miku, Miku came back with a nice German suplex.

Every time Miku bridged to break the count, you could see her desperation, and her desire to win. After a few more moves and counters, Senka pinned her with the running backdrop. ***¾

Sendai Girls Tag Team Title
Red Energy (Mika Iwata & Miyuki Takase) def. Manami & Ryo Mizunami ©

The champions received a good reaction from the audience. Iwata has a great look. I’m glad she’s in the tag title scene because this is a wrestler who can do way more than she’s currently doing.

The match starts off with a chaotic energy, the highlight of the initial five minutes is Mizunami doing Kobashi chops for what felt like an eternity of Iwata. The crowd cheered along with her, and it did not look like any fun for Iwata.

We get heat on Iwata first, which surprised me. Eventually, we get Takase in with Manami, which is fine. This match was good, had a solid structure but never got into the next gear.

All the wrestlers involved are good but usually Senjo main events are of an even higher caliber.

Iwata’s kicks are awesome. She hits really hard, and the sound of her shin hitting Ryo was terrifying and amazing at the same time.

Ryo countered with a thunderous lariat.

Miyuki and Manami were really good together. Once Iwata got in, Manami hit her with a meteora and a senton from the top rope for two. Iwata countered with a running high kick, a kick combo, and her finisher (Michi driver style slam) to get the pin, and we crown new tag champs! ***3/4

After the match, Bob Bob Momo Banana (Mio Momono & Yurika Oka) came out to challenge the new champs.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Sendai Girls SENJO 20th Anniversary Tour In Sendai PIT was a solid show. Nothing must see except for the Rookie pro-test, and the top two matches of the card if you have time.
