It’s official, we now have a full card for NJPW’s annual January 4 trip to the Tokyo Dome.
Wrestle Kingdom 20 will be main evented by Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada in Tanahashi’s retirement match.
Business-wise, Wrestle Kingdom 20 has been a massive success.
NJPW has stopped selling tickets for the show on their website, claiming it is sold out. We don’t yet know what that number entails, but 50,000 people in the building is not an unrealistic expectation, especially if NJPW has halted ticket sales.
That would put it as the highest Tokyo Dome attendance in the “not lying about attendance” era, which began with Wrestle Kingdom 7 in 2013.
The next closest would be the reported 43,000 total in the building for Wrestle Kingdom 12 (though claims are only 35,000 paid). If we go by reported and paid, Night 1 of Wrestle Kingdom 14 saw just a hair over 40k in the building (40,008).
Either way, the Wrestle Kingdom 20 number will be a massive jump over the disappointing 24,107 in the building for last year’s Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Shota Umino main event.
It only makes sense for Tanahashi and Okada to close the show…
