WWE continues its summer hike through Europe with its latest PPV offering, Clash at the Castle. This is in the OVO Hydro, and from the looks of it, this will break another all-time arena gate record for the company. Turning these B-shows over to wrestling-starved markets overseas has paid off, as WWE has been able to get people to pay damn near extortionate prices to get in the door.

It makes me wonder if this also plays as a bit of defense against AEW running All In again, giving European fans big-time shows so they aren’t as desperate to travel to Wembley to see a major wrestling event. WWE ran France for Backlash, Scotland for this show, and will be running in Berlin the week after Wembley in August – with Gunther already confirmed for a World Championship match at SummerSlam a few weeks beforehand. With All In sales “stalling” at 40k per the last WrestleTix update, if it was a strategic move, it was a successful one.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH
THE JUDGMENT DAY BANNED FROM RINGSIDE
DAMIAN PRIEST (C) VS. DREW MCINTYRE

They have completely given up the ghost with Damian Priest as an actual top-line star. They have Drew McIntyre calling the man a transitional champion on the television show. Meanwhile, Priest is playing second fiddle to Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan’s nonsense in the midcard as Rhea Ripley – the actual star of the group – readies for her return. The work they did last year in pretending to make this title feel like a World Championship is all for naught when it’s in the backseat to Dominik’s sexual escapades. By the way, running an angle where someone is being sexually harassed while the company is under federal investigation for sex trafficking is an…interesting choice. But the woman is doing it, so I guess it’s all good?

Anyway, the only question in this match is if WWE has the balls to give the Scottish fans a rerun here. While the Judgment Day is banned from ringside, Carlito – yes, he’s still around – has been trying to curry favor with the group and gain official entry. There’s also the CM Punk factor, as that’s McIntyre’s long-term angle and probable SummerSlam match. With Gunther getting a title match at SummerSlam as a result of winning King of the Ring, I will say that Punk screws McIntyre out of the World Title again to build that match. Would running another distraction finish on McIntyre in Europe kill the town? You would think running two screwjobs on the local hero would, but this is WWE and nothing ever burns them. Prediction: Damian Priest

WWE WOMEN’S TITLE MATCH
BAYLEY (C) VS. PIPER NIVEN

Piper Niven will get a “nice moment” in front of her home country by doing a job to Bayley in a Women’s Title match. The last singles match Piper Niven had was a 5-minute loss to Jade Cargill in the first round of the Queen of the Ring tournament. The last singles match she had before that was a loss to TEGAN NOX in November. You have to go back to the October 16th Raw to get Piper Niven’s last singles win, where she beat Natalya. This is clearly just to get another Scottish person on the show, but is this really any kind of moment?

I remember writing about this last year when Zelina Vega got dorked out by Rhea Ripley in five minutes on the Backlash show in Puerto Rico. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the person get a win in their home country when WWE rarely makes stops there? Is a rousing pity party after the match worth anything? They can’t win a preshow match against some of the other geeks on the roster? This is just a line of thinking that I’ll never understand, but because WWE does it, I’ll have to deal with it forever. Prediction: Bayley

WWE WOMEN’S TAG TEAM TITLE TRIPLE THREAT MATCH
BIANCA BELAIR & JADE CARGILL (C) VS. SHAYNA BASZLER & ZOEY STARK VS. THE UNHOLY UNION (ALBA FYRE & ISLA DAWN)

Cargill and Belair defended their titles against Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell on the June 7th Smackdown, getting attacked afterward by both Baszler & Stark and the Hot Scots. These titles are meaningless, despite what people desperate to count Jade as a win over AEW will tell you. Since neither of the other two Scots are winning, I’d give these fans SOMETHING by sticking the belts on Fyre and Dawn for a few weeks. Let Bianca and Jade pad their stats by getting a second reign in a few weeks. Prediction: Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn

WWE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH
SAMI ZAYN (C) VS. CHAD GABLE

Chad Gable finally makes one of these PPV shows, as he challenges Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental Title. I wasn’t a fan of how Zayn took Gable’s story in the Intercontinental Title feud with Gunther, as that feud felt like a chance to make Gable into a reliable midcard babyface for the company like Zayn already had been. Gable wasn’t a fan of it either as he turned on Zayn after a title defense on Raw. Turning Gable heel before he could ever get his win on Gunther didn’t make sense to me, but having him turn on Zayn made sense.

Gable has since become a bully coach to his Alpha Academy flunkies, Otis, Akira Tozawa, and Mad Maxxine Dupri. Zayn has defended them and tried to get them to leave Gable, but I think it’s a ruse. They’ll all turn on Zayn and help Gable win the title by any means necessary, giving Zayn a chase for the summer. Prediction: Chad Gable

WWE TITLE I QUIT MATCH
CODY RHODES (C) VS. AJ STYLES

Since Backlash, AJ Styles has been trying to get another shot at the WWE Title. Not by winning matches or anything, but by asking Nick Aldis for one. Aldis told him no, so Styles pulled a Mark Henry and faked a retirement to jump Rhodes and get another one. With the King of the Ring winner being on Raw, there’s an outside shot that Styles can win to set up a rematch with Cody for Money in the Bank or SummerSlam. But the most likely option is that Rhodes puts Styles in the rearview and makes him quit. Whether it be Roman Reigns or Solo Sikoa, I assume The Bloodline will circle back towards Rhodes as SummerSlam approaches. Prediction: Cody Rhodes
