This was a more westernised version of their Tokyo Dome bout. The crowd was one of the hottest of 2023 and Omega and Ospreay took full advantage of that, making one of the most dramatic and exciting matches of the year.” -Adam Darwin

I didn’t think anything would top Omega vs. Ospreay at Wrestle Kingdom… until Omega vs. Ospreay at Forbidden Door. The alignment reversal from the first match—with Omega now the hometown hero and Ospreay the invading heel—was really cool and brought the Canadian crowd to a fever pitch. Meanwhile I was jumping up and down like a madman while watching at home. There was Ospreay smashing Kenny’s head into the announce desk over and over as payback for the Dome. The blood. Kenny getting his foot on the rope after the first Stormbreaker. The defiant one-count kickout after the One Winged Angel. The sickening Storm Driver ’93. God, I’m getting hyped up just typing this stuff. I don’t know when or if we’ll get a third match in this feud; for now I’m just happy we got two of the best matches of all time out of it.” -Andrew Rich

The top two matches involved the same two people. I preferred the rematch because of how it built off of the first match. Both were among the top 5 matches I’ve ever seen in my 45+ years of watching wrestling.” -Paul Fontaine

This narrowly beats out their Tokyo Dome match, and here’s why: the crowd reaction. The only other match I’ve attended live where the audience has been trying this hard to will someone to win was Hogan vs Rock in the SkyDome. The crowd’s reaction to Omega kicking out at 1 is something I’ll remember for a long time. Omega was the perfect ‘home country’ babyface, and Ospreay was the perfect heel.” -Jays Retro

While I thought the first match was really good, it didn’t kick into gear for me until Ospreay started selling the concussion. This match was an absolutely incredible live experience. Going in it felt obvious Omega would win in Canada and Ospreay would win a third match down the road. They couldn’t possibly have Omega lose in Canada! As the nearfalls got crazier and crazier I started thinking “wow, Omega could lose” and then “ha, idiot, of course he’s not losing after that!” until finally, Omega lost and the crowd saw such an incredible match they came out of it loving Kenny more than ever.

Bonus: the discourse surrounding the Tiger Driver 91 was very funny.” -Mongo Underscore Ebooks

Another excellent match between Ospreay and Omega, this one edged it for me by forcing me up out of my seat at 3am in awe and horror at ‘that’ Tiger Driver ’91.” -Jack Atkins

A fantastic match that serves as a follow-up to their colossal showdown at Wrestle Kingdom. What sets it apart from their encounter in Japan is the heightened level of brutality and increased animosity between the two. Ospreay executes the heel role perfectly and delivers arguably one of the best performances of his career. The conclusion is both brutal and shocking, and not even the elements of overbooking can detract from the quality of this match.” -Dan Duca

Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega are not only two of the most athletically gifted performers in history. Ospreay and Omega are not only two of the best bell-to-bell wrestlers in history. They are also totally committed to using their athleticism and in-ring skills to push the medium further than it has ever been pushed before.” -Jesse Collings

For my money, this is the greatest match of all-time. In a complete inverse of their first match, Will Ospreay controlled the match and the closing stretch was phenomenal. The Tiger Driver 93 and Omega kicking out at one from his own finishing move, this was amazing on every level.” -Tyler Forness

After having an amazing experience at the first Forbidden Door PPV in 2022, I was already hyped to travel to Toronto for the 2023 edition of the event. However, when the Wrestle Kingdom rematch between Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega was announced, my expectations were through the roof. It was going to be an incredible challenge to top their previous encounter in the Tokyo Dome, but by the time the dust settled, they managed to do just that. This was an absolutely phenomenal match that was such a thrill to experience live. There were so many cool moments, from Ospreay heeling it up in front of the Canadian crowd to the match itself being a role reversal of the Wrestle Kingdom match, with Ospreay being the one that dominated at points. However, I’ll never forget the crowd exploding when Omega’s leg fell on the rope to break up a cover after Ospreay hit the Stormbreaker, and then again when Omega kicked out of the One Winged Angel at one. I’ve gotten to see some pretty awesome moments at the various wrestling shows I’ve been to over the years, but those two spots in particular (and the crowd reaction to those spots) are moments that I will never forget as long as I live. This was definitely the best live match I’ve ever seen, and an easy pick for my 2023 Match Of The Year. A perfect display of why these two are considered to be the best wrestlers in the world, and an excellent example of what makes pro-wrestling so great when it’s done right.” -Sean Sedor

The greatest match on North American soil of all time. Just a masterful way to use the “local” v outsider concept to a beautiful athletic endeavor with one of the greatest finishing stretches to ever occur.” -Jack Murphy

2023 was the year where I finally attended a live wrestling show for the first time in my life. Forbidden Door was the first ever PPV show I ever attended live. I got the pleasure to watch one of the greatest matches of all time. This match was crazy from start to finish. Just amazing.” -Filip Pejic

One of the best matches I’ve ever seen. I can’t explain quite *why* I have it over the January 4th Dome match. But I just liked it a little more.” -Jarrett Seidler

This was a rollercoaster of a match because it represents the passing of the torch from one legendary gaijin to the next generational front-running gaijin. You had moments where you jumped out of your seat in relief that the other guy kicked out while cheering profusely after seeing Ospreay take home the gold for a second time (if you were pulling for him)! A match like this definitely will inspire the next generation of prospective wrestling fans and trainees to be more involved in this industry. It was an emotional match, and even though I try not to get too emotional when watching masterpieces like this, I couldn’t help but shed a tear or two.” -Brie Coder

It’s funny trying to figure out why something is you “favorite” or “the best.” I’ve found that with wrestling matches, much like other forms of art there are so many variables that affect your experience. How, when, and where you watched a match can add or detract from it, especially when we are splitting hairs as to what the very best of the best is.

I’ll admit, I saw the second Omega/Ospreay match before their much heralded Wrestle Kingdom match. I was out on NJPW for a lot of the year, especially the first half. Maybe if I had seen the Tokyo Dome match first that would be my number 1, but the truth is I didn’t.

Seeing Omega/Ospreay II live at Forbidden Door II in front of an insanely hot crowd and coming after yet another incredible card of AEW/NJPW matches put me in the state of mind to enjoy it more than any other wrestling match I saw from 2023.

Ospreay’s sky twister press to the outside and his Storm Driver ‘93 to Omega are two of the moves/spots/“moments” from 2023 that left an indelible mark. While the presence of Don Callis loomed over the match as a detriment to some, I feel that it never distracted from the match and added some tension and mystery on top of the world class action in the ring.
I remember at the time the stuff with the security guards and Callis being a bit annoying and not really paying off – but thinking back on the match it doesn’t bother me at all. The Callis involvement was part of the match yes, but to me it didn’t bring down any of the highs of the battle. The closing stretch still had me on the edge of my seat, at these two dropped each other on their heads in the style of 90s Royal Road All Japan, and in the end created the best match of 2023.

Again, maybe if I had seen Kenny and Willi’s Tokyo Dome match before their rematch, my frame of reference would be different and I wouldn’t rate their Forbidden Door match so highly. Maybe if I hadn’t watched Ospreay/Omega I from WK on my phone while sitting on my couch months later, it would be my match of the year instead. But the amazing thing about art is that everyone experiences it differently and brings their unique feelings and emotions to it at one particular moment.

Sometimes though the match can overcome anything else going on. Some of you may be thinking “the Wrestle Kingdom match was way better! Maybe if you had watched it properly rather than on a phone you would think so too!” I will admit, potentially that is true, but I can also tell you that my match of year of 2020, 2021, and 2022 were all watched on my phone and were able to engage me in such a way that I know viewing on a phone is not truly a limitation. I still fondly remember watching Okada vs. Naito from January 4, 2020 in my car sitting in a doctor’s office parking lot.
And ultimately that’s what makes a match of the year to me. What match made me suspend my disbelief to the greatest extent? What match made me fully lost in the moment? When I think back to 2023, that was Will Ospreay vs. Kenny Omega at Forbidden Door.” -S. Dakota Jones

In January, I saw what I immediately deemed the greatest match I’d ever seen. When they announced a rematch for a show I had a ticket to, I was overjoyed, but cautiously optimistic that they’d be able to approach the quality of their first meeting.

Somehow, they topped it.” -Jeremy Sexton

Not as good as the Tokyo Dome match but still out of this world.” -Jon Rogers

I really think that, first match was better. When I look at the second one, It feels too much. Its like they were trying too hard to beat the Tokyo Dome match. But by doing that, they exaggerated some stuff. However that shouldn’t mean that it was bad. They effort they showed here was enough to once again convince me about, why these two are some of the best performers we ever seen. Hats of to both of them. Once again they raised the bar to another level.” -Kaan

A brilliant and brutal match! A slow start early on as each man feels each other out. Ospreay goes high risk first to take advantage and starts to up the brutality of the match. We get a nice callback to their first match only reversed with Ospreay violently slamming Omega into the announcer’s table to bust him up. Ospreay is full heel here by mocking the Canada crowd but it only serves to fire up Omega, who comes back and busts Ospreay open on the stairs before DDTing him on them! Ospreay is pouring blood as the two men battle it out! Incredible back and forth action with gorgeous counters. Omega looks to finish Ospreay off with the One-Winged Angel but Callis gives Ospreay a screwdriver. Ospreay stabs Omega! Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker follows up but Omega gets his foot on the rope! Ospreay makes it personal with a Kamagoye and a One-Winged Angel but Omega kicks out at one!!! Omega won’t stay down but Ospreay isn’t done! Some more back and forth counters before Ospreay drops Omega on his neck with a Tiger Driver 91 and a Stormbreaker finally ends it. What a match! Violent, bloody, great story-telling and two of the best wrestlers today. A perfect match! *****” -Alex Kalil

The most talked about rematch in years saw Ospreay walk into Canada with vengeance on his mind. Vengeance for the embarrassment he felt at the Tokyo Dome, and vengeance for the beating he took at Omega’s hands. Here, it was Omega beaten bloody in front of his countrymen and left laying as the former US Champion. I have this match slightly ahead of the Wrestle Kingdom match due to the home country crowd for Omega elevating this match ever so slightly ahead of the Tokyo Dome match.” -Suit Williams

The dynamic of their January match-up had somewhat reversed by the time Forbidden Door came around. Ospreay was willing to do what was needed to defeat his elder foe in a quest for revenge for the violence he had been exposed to back in the Dome. Omega, fighting his body, fought with pride and he desperately tried to fend him off.

Omega is an incredible babyface in this one, right up to his very last stand. The kick out at one was one of those electric moments which are few and far between. It brought an entire audience not only to its feet but to burst into the air. It might have only been a last stand before an ultimate defeat but it the exact type of moment that keeps you emotionally invested in this great sport.” -Trish Speirs

The Tiger Driver 91 that broke the internet. It’s a toss up between which of the two matches between these two is better but that moment pushes it over the edge for me.” -BlastoSTG

Only Will Ospreay and Kenny Omegea could put on a match so good it ends up in the top ten of a great year, yet you can still say “not as good as their first.”” -Neil David

Once again, these 2 deliver a classic. Ospreay continues his 2023 God run while Omega shows he can still be the best bout machine. Also, TIGER DRIVER ‘91!” -Brett Miles

Doing a rematch to the Match of the Year comes with near-unmeetable expectations and pressure. But they sure got close, and I could easily understand anyone who makes a case for this being the better version. This is no less brutal than the first and comes with a complete dynamic change – a now heel Ospreay has a massive chip on his shoulder and a vicious streak of match stoppages in the build. Omega is still portrayed as the best, but is now more conflicted and distracted due to turbulent sotyrlines and is for the first time, potentially beatable. This is at my #4 because these lists require you to split hairs between greatness, and truthfully I have no interest in anything Don Callis does on my TV screen. This is still as masterful as their first match, but this one is just shy of reaching that pinnacle.” -SOM

Probably a slightly better match than their Wrestle Kingdom bout, the rematch suffered from a level of hype and anticipation that nobody could have lived up to, short of one of them killing the other (which it looked like they did for a minute with that Tiger Driver.) This was everything that made the previous match immortal with a slightly quicker pace and a heel/face role reversal. Simply sublime.” -Martin Hearty

The rematch of a match that had already set the bar very high on January 4 at NJPW. This time we find ourselves in a totally different context, with a totally different script too.

The writing of the match, which gradually builds up an atmosphere leading up to Will Ospreay’s One Wing Angel kick out at 1 on Kenny Omega, is exceptional.

Despite Ospreay’s predictable victory, they knew and were able to take the audience where they wanted to go during the match to create such a unique moment with an explosion of joy in the audience at the aforementioned moment.

A memorable match and a moment we won’t soon forget.” -Traff

“The atmosphere for Omega/Ospreay II was something else. Just a special energy in the air for this generational rematch. Two styles that clicked better than we could have ever dreamed earlier in the year in Japan, building to such incredible hype for the American soil outing.

My God some of the crazy spots in this match as the intensity built, including Will Ospreay delivering the nastiest looking neck bump of the year to Omega in the form of a devastating Tiger Driver crashing the Canadian right onto his noggin. Both lads taking the violent bumps just as insanely as they gave them.

Just look at the crowd for the final stretch. The sight of that whole arena on their feet tells you everything. All the stars. Every single person standing in ovation for a classic I’ll be revisiting over and over as the years go by.” -Matt Maher (aka Imp)

“The “”best in the world”” conversation starts after these two. They did it again. Following up an absolute masterclass at Wrestle Kingdom with what I would call a more “”westernized”” but still epic encounter. In similar fashion to the Wrestle Kingdom entrances, this pageantry tells a story.

Now it’s Ospreay with the big entrance and Omega just coming out with the belt around his waist; all business reminiscent of his Dominion 2018′ entrance. Another heel/face turn right in the beginning. Brilliant. I believe matches can be 5 stars for a multitude of different reasons; the story, the in-ring action, the crowd, the atmosphere, the violence, the drama, etc. This was everything and it had everything, down to the commentary and an electric crowd. It was; high spots, athleticism, violence, technical, high impact and innovative moves, storytelling, desperation, pride and the most convincing near falls I’ve ever seen. Omega kicking out at one and getting his foot on the rope after “”Stormbreaker”” were two of the loudest pops wrestling got out of me in 2023. If I had to be picky, I was annoyed by the Don Callis interference, mostly because it made the referee look extremely incompetent. But, I digress, another classic nonetheless.” -Noveliss

Having seen this match live it’s very difficult to choose between it and its predecessor for match of the year, and I don’t think I need to talk to VOW readers about the phenomenological difference between seeing a great match live and in person versus from the comfort of one’s couch. If I’m looking at it as objectively as I can, the booking of Ospreay and Callis in this match, despite adding nuclear heat in the arena, does somewhat detract from the unremitting flow and intensity which the Wrestle Kingdom match had. But to my dying day I will never forget standing in that arena, staring agape at the ring in the moments after that Tiger Driver ’91, more horrific and devastating in appearance than any of Misawa’s save for the one he reserved especially for Kawada on 6-3-94. Some around me were calling it a botch, but if you knew, you knew. That didn’t stop me from wondering if I’d just seen Will Ospreay break Kenny Omega’s neck, and in the noise, heat, panic, and visceral thrill which permeated the air that night in Toronto, pro wrestling was more real to me in that moment than it had ever been.” -Bruce Lord

While this was clearly inferior to their first match in my book (not the least of which because AEW needlessly decided to involve a bunch of Don Callis garbage in it for no reason), it was still something else to be there in person and witness Ospreay walk into Canada as the ultimate villain, a complete reversal of their first match. This time instead of the sheer brutality that defined their first battle they went with more of a classic big moves/nearfall stretch run type of match and of course it more than worked for them.” -John Carroll

Another Ospreay vs Omega classic. This match was exceptional and in many years would be the match of the year. However this match was up against itself in a way as the match from 4th of January was just that much better. Intense action and drama with some awesome near falls. This match was slightly handicapped by the AEW storytelling of the time which involved not only Ospreay and Omega but Don Callis who intervened in the match when not really needing to and impacting the finish although thankfully his actions did not lead to the finish.” -Jason Turner

This was much of what I loved about their first match at Wrestle Kindom played out in reverse. And Ospreay was not only looking for revenge for the Tokyo Dome, but allowed himself to be completely consumed by a desire to put Omega through the same kind of hell that Will suffered through at the Tokyo Dome — going so far as to taste Omega’s blood that had been spilled. While I slightly preferred the Tokyo Dome match between these two, there is plenty of spectacle for anyone to justify ranking this match higher.” -TDE

The second match between Omega & Ospreay in 2023 told a similar but yet different story than their first match. This time Ospreay dominated and destroyed Omega from the first moment on in Canada. This time Omega made the big comeback, and it was great. They had the perfect match, until the Callis interferences that lowered the match a bit for me in this list. Ospreay got back the control and hit the Tiger Driver 91 that is stuck in the heads of everyone to this day. He then finishes off Omega and wins the IWGP US Championship back” -Yannik Peps

It can’t be a surprise that, if the first match was top of my list, this one had to be on there, as well. While this match was perhaps slightly sullied by the Callis shenanigans, I didn’t find them as off putting as some seemed to. When the infamous Tiger Driver incident came to pass, I screamed out loud like it had just happened to ME. When my wife who had gone to the kitchen (and is no Ospreay fan) asked why I was screaming, I was so overcome that I yelled “Ospreay just killed Kenny with a SHOOT Ganso bomb!” I was so worked up by the destruction of Omega that I got my notorious Japanese super finishes wrong. Shame it wasn’t the end of the match.” -Justin Harman aka DJ Convoy

This was the sequel to one of the best pro wrestling matches I have seen, so the bar was high when I went into it, and it did not disappoint. I like how it followed up the previous match by reversing the roles, with Ospreay being so mad from before that he made Omega go through the same hell he passed through at the Tokyo Dome. When Omega got up at a specific one count? I was standing like the crowd was. One of the best pro wrestling moments of the year. What made this match lose points compared to the other one is the interference spot. The whole Callis thing was annoying and interrupted the flow of the match for me, which is why I have it below the Tokyo Dome encounter. Besides that, it is one of those matches that I will point to to why I keep watching this stuff. It’s matches and wrestlers like these, these magical moments like these match series in 2023, that keep me a wrestling fan.” -Abraham Delgado

Almost as good as their first encounter, the feud will have new life in AEW going forward, but this is another all-timer. Adding a little more viciousness to the mix and expressing their superiority as physical pro-wrestling prodigies, they put it all out there and garnered controversy that will emblazon this match in peoples’ memories. Whether the Storm Driver was nigh-unsafe spot thrills or cleverly executed/worked/sold wrestling ability the fact is that both of these guys have the will and the skill to keep this gray area alive and enticing. Isn’t that what we ask of pro-wrestling: People putting their bodies on the line with insane precision to ideally not get hurt but make us believe that they are? Mission accomplished, by the best of the best.” -Jake Nelson

A match 99.5 percent good as the original. A rematch of mammoth proportions nearly equaled what I voted for #1 on this list. A complete flip of dynamics from the previous 6 months with only a wonky Don Callis appearance fit into 40 minutes of devastation. AEW vs NJPW was the bed of the event, and Ospreay and Omega went out there as if they were disrespected by not being placed in the main event (AGAIN) and quite frankly, they wiped the floor with what was. I thought this was insulting not to have gone on last. I have a feeling this match not being the main event was a victim of who was set to win the last match. This was so good the safety police were on the attack on all fronts which led to the great response from Kenny Omega, “You wouldn’t tell Mike Tyson how to box, and you can’t tell Tyson Smith how to wrestle.” Omega was able to show he could be the best wrestler in the world still on a given day, as Ospreay continued to display why he’s day to day the best on the planet. There were some of the greatest nearfalls I’ve ever seen in this match. This match is why I love pro wrestling.” -Rich Latta

The best matches create indelible moments that are never forgotten by those who witness them. Kenny Omega kicking out at one in front of his fellow Canadian fans in Toronto is one of those moments. Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to attend Wrestle Kingdom, Wrestlemania, and various other PPVs and major wrestling events. Omega kicking out at one is the loudest and most intense reaction I’ve ever experienced at a wrestling show. This is the best match I’ve ever seen live. It can be difficult for a sequel to live up to expectations after the original is a massive hit, but some outside interference from Don Callis is the only thing preventing this match from topping Omega and Ospreay’s first encounter. This was an all-time classic and an extraordinary performance from both men.” -Adam Berger

“Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay faced the daunting task of delivering a match that could rival their epic encounter on January 4th, and they undeniably succeeded. However, the story of this match took a different turn from the first. This time, Ospreay embraced his role as the despised villain, aligning himself with the notorious heat magnet, Don Callis. On the other hand, Kenny emerged as the beloved hometown hero, basking in the crowd’s adoration. Ospreay was determined to rectify his previous loss earlier in the year and left no stone unturned in his quest for victory. He unleashed a barrage of devastating moves, including the Kamigoye, the One Winged Angel, and even a screwdriver to the head. Yet, Omega proved to be a formidable opponent, refusing to go down without a fight. The relentless onslaught of V-trigger after V-trigger kept Omega in the contest. Despite his valiant efforts, Omega eventually fell to a brutal sequence of moves, including the Storm Driver, the Hidden Blade, and the Stormbreaker. This match was an intense, blood-soaked battle, filled with numerous nods to their previous encounters. It encapsulated everything you would want from a big time rematch.” -Jeremy Donovan
