Sometimes you know a result before the match even starts… but sometimes the wrestlers manage to make you believe a different result is possible. This happened to me during Titán vs. Master Wato. My Mexican side got the better of me and got me jumping at every Titán move and every nearfall. It’s been literally years since a match made me do this. This match reminded why I love wrestling so much.” -Ricardo Gallegos

Saya Kamitani’s Wonder of STARDOM reign will go down as an all timer, and it’s matches like this that highlight why. The match is wonderfully crafted, with a natural ebb and flow as it builds to a thunderous finish, but it’s the crowd that lifts this to the next level. Slowly but surely the crowd begin to believe in Hazuki, and by the end everything she does elicits a raucous response that elevates an already great match.” -Trent Breward

Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte Flair

At WrestleMania 36, stuck inside the Performance Center because of COVID, Ripley lost her NXT Title to Charlotte. It was a disappointing result, as WWE had the opportunity to really put Ripley over. Three years later, WWE made good on that, having Ripley win the Smackdown Women’s Title over Flair at WrestleMania 39. Flair has her ups and downs as a wrestler, but she was on her game here and Ripley vaulted into another level with this performance.” -Greg Parks

This may be my favourite feud of all time now. It’s gone on for years and has had many classics and this one may have been my favourite of the bunch. It did feel the most violent as their hatred had grown and grown over time. I loved that they saw red and didn’t even try to wrestle at the start before they realized they had a title to win. The snapmare from the top to the table looked so vicious, I was dying! By the end, they both tried everything before the Steiner Screwdriver by Tam finished Giulia off.

Years of Stardom booking long reigns really made Tam’s victory feel special.” -Steven Graham

Tam Nakano vs. Giulia for one of the top women’s titles in the world. Need I say more?” -Kristen Ashly

Kenny Omega vs. El Hijo del Vikingo

It would’ve been difficult for El Hijo Del Vikingo to make a better impression on the Tony Khan universe than this. Kenny Omega gave the death defying young luchador everything and he took it and did everything and more. If I listed all of the incredible feats in this match, I would probably just be listing the entire match beginning to end, but Vikingo’s running 630 senton to Omega outside the ring sticks out even among all of the other great stuff in this match and for my money is the most memorable move I saw all year.” -Jeff Ahmed

Sometimes, I want to see a new story I’ve never seen before, an idea that is fresh and innovative and all sorts of buzzwords that are in vogue. However, sometimes I prefer the classics. The unbeatable team that are among the best ever, vs. the two friends who came from nothing and did the impossible. Sami and Kevin main eventing a WrestleMania together to win the titles is a thing I might remember forever. Bravo.” -Slyguy46

Jon Moxley vs. Orange Cassidy

“Heart” and “Soul” were overused very quickly in professional wrestling, but this match really was the Heart and Soul of AEW. At a time when the identity of the company started to slide into nonsense, this match reminded everyone that AEW could still thrive. Cassidy’s title reign was the best story in wrestling this year and cumulated here: a beaten, battered, broken babyface champion defending his title against the most violent and dangerous star in wrestling in the main event of one of the biggest PPV’s of the year. Cassidy never stood a chance, but that’s why we jump out of our seats and cheer at every hope spot and nearfall. Other matches may be technically better, more back and forth, less one sided, but nothing made me root for a wrestler more than this match.” -August Baker

Sareee vs. Arisa Nakajima

This is the best women’s singles match you are going to find in 2023. Sareee just coming back on the scene in May 2023 came in hot on a run in the second half of the year like no other. On the other side you have the veteran and a dying breed of her time Arisa Nakajima going toe to toe. This match is so hard hitting these beat the crap out of each other like they each owed each other money. The last 5 minutes of the match is the most magical closing stretch of big bomb moves you will get in today’s joshi. Just brilliant stuff here from both.” -FAR5222

Yuya Aoki vs. Yuji Okabayashi

Overall Points: 138

% of Ballots: 9.95%
2 First-Place Votes

Perfection. That’s the best way to describe this match, easily the best thing I saw in 2023 and one of my favourite matches of all-time.

You had Okabayashi, the current ace of the promotion and head trainer at their dojo, trying to beat back the challenge of man that he’d trained and seen rise through the junior ranks and up to heavyweight in Yuya Aoki. Beat is the operative word, as Okabayashi beat him around the arena in Yokohama with strikes, suplexes and big power moves. Aoki stayed in the fight, showing the courage and heart that would come to define his reign in 2023.

There is a marvellous visual of Aoki sitting up after a powerbomb, bleeding from the mouth and motioning his hands in a fighting stance. His eyes betrayed that there was no one there, that he was fighting on instinct rather than actual energy reserves.

There were an abundance of kickouts down the stretch, each one seeming more final than the last. Each one had me standing and pacing in front of my laptop at 3am, marvelling at Aoki proving that he was more than ready to take over Okabayashi’s mantle. Aoki simply wouldn’t die, embodying the show’s Endless Survivor moniker.

The easiest five stars I’ve ever given, this was a masterclass in the art of professional wrestling.” -Andrew Sinclair

This was the most boss fight-esque match of the year as Aoki managed to slay the beast that is Yuji Okabayashi after whittling him down time after time before finding that weak spot and taking the shot to finally take down the champ.” -Andrew Darwin

Tetsuya Naito vs. Kazuchika Okada

Overall Points: 147

This match hits a bit differently after a certain shocking announcement, doesn’t it? Chris Charlton saying that “There is, there was, there will be Kazuchika Okada. Because he is New Japan.” Strikes differently. Okada getting a bit misty-eyed at the crowd’s raucous cheers when the bell sounds strikes differently. What doesn’t strike any differently is how absolutely incredible this match is. In what already was in August and significantly more so in January is an era of transition for New Japan, Okada and Naito made what is probably the last stand of a now bygone era for the promotion and what’s most impressive about it isn’t that they were able to turn back the clock, per se, it’s that in their 13th try, they had what was probably their best match with each other. And it was beautifully simple in a way the best pro wrestling always is – Naito’s finisher targets the neck, so he worked Okada’s neck. Meanwhile, Naito had been legitimately knocked out in his match the previous night, so Okada pummeled Naito’s head. Take the high stakes of the G1 final, add that story, use the excellent impactful selling that these two men do better than anybody and throw in a bit of Naito torturing himself and every single one of his fans by going for that stupid goddamn motherfucking Stardust Press and you’ve got all you need for a truly special main event. The best moment is the finish, when Naito avoids Okada’s final attempt at the Rainmaker and the crowd audibly gasps as he uses his own ripcord to hit a Destino and everybody in that building knows that it’s over. I’m a Naito fan through and through, but this was an absolute masterpiece from Kazuchika Okada. If this was the Rainmaker’s last G1 final, then I genuinely believe he finished with one of his finest bell-to-bell efforts ever.” -Jeff Ahmed

Queen’s Quest vs. Oedo Tai

The entire nation shed tears…
STARDOM for cinematography and editing,
Utami Hayashishita for Best Actress,
Saya Kamitani and Saki Kashima for Best Supporting Cast,
Rossy Ogawa for Best Director.” -aguakun

The peak of what professional wrestling is all about for me. It’s rare a story can be told so painfully, emotionally, and beautifully within a single match. Queen’s Quest — specifically Utami Hayashishita and Saya Kamitani — delivered the showing of a lifetime in this match against Oedo Tai. Hayashishita’s fight to save Queen’s Quest before herself was something that won’t leave my mind. She was left in there with both Natsuko Tora and Saki Kashima, being battered, destroyed, and left without any answers. She was broken open and bloody, making it feels as though her time with Queen’s Quest was over.

But the leader got up and fought, ultimately winning the match once Kamitani reached for her hand and had the moment atop the Steel Cage.

When they’re at the top of their game, it’s hard to be anywhere near Hayashishita and Kamitani in terms of in-ring abilities. However, in this match, the wrestling was second to their magical storytelling.

One of the greatest matches and stories in STARDOM history.” -Scott Edwards

The two biggest factions of STARDOM colliding in the ring for what seems to be for one final clash. The story going into this match dates back 2021 to when then World of STARDOM Champion defended her belt against Oedo Tai leader Natsuko Tora. In that match sadly Tora would go down with an ACL injury. Out for over a year she vowed to destroy Utami and Queen’s Quest all together when she would return. Later that year we see Starlight Kid playing mind games with then Queen’s Quest leader, Momo Watanabe. SLK was planting thoughts of doubt and resentment about being surpassed by the likes of Utami and Saya. When on December 18, 2021, at Stardom Osaka Super Wars we saw the match Loser Must Join Opposite Unit Vs. Mask Captain’s Fall Eight Man Tag Team Match — Queen’s Quest (AZM, Momo Watanabe, Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita) vs. Oedo Tai (Konami, Ruaka, Saki Kashima & Starlight Kid). The conclusion of the match would see Momo clock AZM in the head with a chair causing QQ to lose the match and Momo leaving the group. From that point on they have both been at each others throats for the better part of almost two years.

In early 2023 we saw the same thing happening yet again with Saya Kamitani being teased to join Oedo Tai and turn on her fellow Queen’s Quest members. Utami after losing her red belt a week later after Momo had betrayed them was questioned as leader and if she was the right fit to take Queen’s Quest to new heights. QQ saw a downturn for a bit with losses and the pair of Utami and Saya known as AphroditE not seeing eye to eye with one another. Queen’s Quest had one last shot to get back at Oedo Tai once and for all with the cage match announced and set for June. The culmination of a two-year story coming to its happy ending for the good guys. Utami in the match proved how much of an amazing leader she with assisting in some of her teammates escaping the cage successfully sacrificing herself. The match itself is just chaotic fun and filled to the brim with lore between both factions that any avid viewer of STARDOM would love this match to death.

The finish of the match saw three people left in the ring with Utami for Queen’s Quest and Oedo Tai’s Natsuko Tora and Saki Kashima. Tora hits a Swanton bomb off the top of the cage and makes her escape thus leaving Utami and Saki. Utami bloodied and battered makes her climb up to the cage when Momo with bat in hand climbs up to stop Utami. Saya breaks free from the clutches of Oedo Tai and climbs up as well to stop Momo. Momo and Saya both stare at each while Utami looks up at both. We see Saya given the bat by Momo to turn on Utami and leave QQ. Saya swings the bat but in the direction of Momo’s head instead. Saya grabs Utami’s hand the the most iconic picture of 2023 as she helps make her escape and giving Queen’s Quest the biggest victory in the battle and ending this war.

The post match happenings heightened the story so much more with Saki being jumped by her former faction for failing to win as she is kicked out for being final one left in the cage. But not all hope is lost as Queen’s Quest come in to save her and offer her a place in the group to which she declines. Utami gives one last big hurrah speech to send fans home happy and assured that Queen’s Quest is fine and stronger than ever under Utami, and they are one big family.” -FAR5222

In the decades since Bull Nakano dropped the guillotine on Aja Kong at AJW’s WrestleMarinepiad in 1990, the steel cage match has become one of the most legendary stipulations in joshi wrestling history. So, when I say Queen’s Quest vs. Oedo Tai’s bout at STARDOM Sunshine 2023 is likely the greatest cage match I’ve ever seen, it is as loaded a statement as they come. However, that doesn’t make it any less accurate.

While all 12 competitors deserve credit for making this all-out war the stellar match it was, none deserve as much credit as the brilliant Utami Hayashishita. Yet another feather in the cap of the five-year pro, Utami fought valiantly to regain the trust and companionship of her disillusioned stablemates, consistently putting herself in harm’s way. That central story, paired with the bout’s fast-paced action and creative sequences, made this an emotional rollercoaster that I predict will be remembered by joshi wrestling fans for years and years to come.” -Dylan Murray

When it comes to mixing exciting in ring action with emotionally driven storytelling, there may not be a better crafted match than than this. Utami went into the cage as a questionable leader, and she did everything necessary to walk out as an undisputed one. Twists and turns, not to mention a match that never lets up or feels crowded despite 12 women being crammed in a cage, and you’ve got a magical bit of wrestling.” -Trent Breward

An operatic, moving story unfolded inside a steel cage on this night.

Even with all the moving parts involved, the action flowed. Highlight followed highlight. We see high-flying, weaponry, and straight-up ass-kicking used to create a stellar bout with an impressive amount of layers.

Utami’s leadership story gets the most attention, but there are no shortage of subplots to enjoy along the way. It’s a match that gets better after multiple viewings, as one can truly appreciate every detail, every moments, every narrative tributary flowing from the main, rushing river.” -Ryan Dilbert

One of the best gimmick and story matches ever done by them. Utami, Saya, and Oedo Tai told one of the best stories of the year in the ring and out of it.” -Pedro Bonilla / PlugPedro

When I think back to 2023 there is one moment that stands out that being Saya Kamitani refusing to turn on Utami Hayashishita and reaching her hand out and helping her escape to end this match. That was a moment where every Stardom fan watching this match cheered. The turn had been teased for weeks and it made sense with Utami’s leadership of QQ always being questioned and it felt so good to see that her faction trusts her as the leader. Now the match itself in the ring was a masterclass of a unit on unit warfare almost right out of DragonGate’s iconic Dead or Alive matches. Each member of each team got plenty to do and Oedo Tai for the first time in years felt like this unstoppable heel unit they used to feel like. For me as a fan of wrestling in 2023 this was the match I felt the most rewarded for my investment in the story and for me as a fan I will always put that ahead of everything else.” -Sondre Fossheim Bjørn

An absolutely stunning display of pro-wrestling. Shota Umino has always been a guy I am skeptical about, but the G1 and this match in particular sold me on him being a bonafide dude. I was already invested in this match, and then Moxley came to ringside and started cussing and rooting on Umino and by that point, it was history for me. One of my favorite matches I’ve ever seen, and a match that would be my MOTY in many other years.” -Jack Beckmann

A fantastic way to cap off the 2023 Year of All Japan.” -Ryan Neitzey

Match of the year comes at the very last minute. Nakajima and Miyahara are two of the very best in the world and they put on a classic to make their sempais proud. Its incredible they topped their earlier 2023 match, which is also on my list.” -Jeff Cohen

Katsuhiko Nakajima came across like the biggest star in the world. He put in the performance of a lifetime. Kento Miyahara also delivered. I like the dynamic here better than the one in their NOAH match. Nakajima as the outsider and Miyahara as the home promotion’s ace just works. Miyahara is a top-tier babyface and Nakajima plays a dick heel perfectly.” -Rene Martinez

This was the first Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship match I’ve watched. I had seen Nakajima and Miyahara on cross promotional shows with New Japan, but my experience watching both men was fairly limited. As soon as Nakajima started walking to the ring with his new haircut and Ali Bombaye playing, I could tell that I was watching something special. This match was the epitome of “big fight feel” and I loved every second of it.” -Ry Harrison

Snuck in here the final day of the calendar year. This topped their first in every way. Every bit as violent, every bit as nasty and all of the passion that makes grudge matches like this so great.” -Markeem Graham

This match had all the ingredients: a good build, a hot crowd, brilliant chemistry between all three competitors, and the biggest stage in wrestling on which to put it all together.
I would have happily taken a Gunther and Sheamus rematch, but the addition of McIntyre allowed for extra twists and turns in the action which pushed the bout into a different realm. All three men delivered simple, punishing thrills with incredible emphasis – but the magical element here was the undercurrent of desperation running throughout the action (and bubbling to the surface with increasing regularity down the stretch.) Phenomenal.” -Jack G. King

This match was my favorite match on the WrestleMania 39 card and of the year. This was a hard-hitting and stiff contest between three big guys who can bring it! Each one of these superstars are tremendous athletes.” -Rich Michaels

This is on the list for perhaps the greatest WrestleMania match of all time. The super heavyweight division in WWE has never been better represented than by three of the finest wrestlers to come from Europe. The NEVER division seemingly broke out in the middle of this match which was a battle over the Intercontinental title. The only slight complaint I have was about the winner. This was Sheamus’ match to win, and he just didn’t. Extremely physical warfare that represents the best about modern WWE, the few times it gets unleashed.” -Rich Latta

An intense hoss-fight between three of WWE’s underrated wrestlers that stole an already pretty great Night 1 of WrestleMania. A very rare WWE-style match that felt intense & brutal, a total departure of usual conventions to show why all three should be considered some of the best of all time.” -Nicholas Johnson

In a company that favors spectacle and melodrama over in-ring action, these 3 men decided to remind everyone that a good, hard-hitting pro wrestling match can get over in front of any crowd and any audience. An incredible effort by all involved.” -Liam Renner

The story was there, and the brutality matched it. A match that reminded me of the wars fought by Ishii or Shibata for the NEVER title in New Japan, back in a time when such matches, leaning more towards shoot fights, were glorified. There are several elements I didn’t expect to see in the WWE ring, such as the fact that all the maneuvers had a logic behind them, and the booking was on point, with the match ending with the right decision.” -Dan Duca
