This is the highest that sport entertaiment may achieve. Pro wrestling felt like the most fun thing in the world during 35 minutes of excelent wrestling with Cody trying to finish his history in front of a rabid crowd devoted to witness this dream fulfill, and convinced that it will happen, and, after a hell of a match, they got their heart broken in pieces. If 2023 showed us something, it was that wrestling is at its best when we don’t know how much of it is real. When Kaito Kiyomiya kicked Okada right in the face, time stopped. I couldn’t tell what was going on. Was it another Maeda/Choshu situation? When Okada answered back properly, it made me even more confused. And for those few minutes, the magic of professional wrestling was back. I didn’t know what was real and what was not, and I didn’t care. I saw two guys wrestling and it looked like they meant it. Of course, their follow-up match did not live up to the expectations, but nobody will ever take those few minutes from me when wrestling was wrestling again.” -Evandro Furtado

This is less about the match and more for the only spot anyone thought about after the show – Kaito punting Okada’s head hardway and Okada losing his shit and punking out Kaito. While hindsight is 20/20 and we know that nothing really came of it, at the time the evolution of Okada into grumpy old man mode shooting on the next generation felt like a fresh and exciting direction for the character and for a promotion that sorely needed to get freshened up.” -SOM

Eddie Kingston, as CHIKARA Grand Champion, main evented the first ever indie show I road-tripped to see, defending his belt against Brodie Lee (RIP) in Ottawa on March 25th 2012. I was already a huge CHIKARA fan, having stumbled upon them online after giving up on WWE, and subsequently giving up on TNA. CHIKARA kept me a wrestling fan in some bleak years, it and Eddie Kingston made me an Indie wrestling fan.

So, when the Continental Classic was announced, and the truly “Mad King” put up all his gold to sweeten the pot, I knew what I wanted to happen. I didn’t know I’d be on the edge of my seat, genuinely uncertain until the very end if he’d come out with the gold…

But not only did he come out with the gold, he did so in a match that was hard hitting, violent, intense, overflowing with personality and ego, and, further sweetened by the ride to get there. An extremely “my kind of match” moment heightened by not only the previous month’s worth of brand re-igniting matches in a format I’d been dying to see American wrestling tackle at this scale for eons, the round robin tournament, but also 15 or so years of die-hard fandom for the Kingston. A cathartic moment. I cried. Perfect match.” -James “NuclearConvoy” Snelgrove

The Continental Classic may have been one of the best parts of AEW television in 2023, save for maybe FTR versus Jay White and Juice Robinson in that Collision 2-out-of-3 Falls Match. With Moxley reaching a high win-rate and Eddie pulling off a miraculous comeback with cathartic wins over Claudio Castagnoli and Bryan Danielson, he had one more Blackpool Combat Club member to eliminate. The decades of friendship and the love of violence strengthens this. Terry Funk would have been proud.” -Corey Michaels

It took me ages to complete this list. 2023 was just an incredible year for wrestling. There were at least 30 matches that deserved a spot on this list. The Mox/Omega cage match should be here. You could have filled all 10 with Ospreay matches alone (in a just world his Bound for Glory match with Speedball Mike Bailey would be in this spot). With so much great wrestling happening I’ve tried to get a nice spread of different styles in this list. Technical, dramatic, strong style, hardcore etc… But a key, indeed, foundational, aspect of wrestling has always been, and will always be, nonsense. And there was no more skilful a display of nonsense than Anarchy in the Arena. Utterly chaotic, utterly ludicrous, utterly enthralling. A deranged riot set to the soundtrack of a live band, before the singer was kicked in the face and then Mox got shot with an exploding shoe. Wait, let me google this in case I dreamed that. Nope, that happened. Am I dumber for having watched it? Yes. Am I happier? Indubitably! God damn it, I fuckin love pro-wrestling. Bring on 2024!” -Martin Hearty

There is a certain kind of match that I discovered joshi wrestling does better than anyone else and that’s whenever the leading generation fights the new generation in a main event multi-woman tag match. To celebrate 10 years of TJPW ten women were all given the Korakuen spotlight for a Best 2 Out Of 3 Falls that was smartly put together. Arisu Endo and Moka Miyamoto were the new blood in particular that were given time to shine in the first two falls. But while the crowd enthusiastically got behind them as the match progressed, the 2nd & 3rd falls were set up for Yuka Sakazaki & Miyu Yamashita to show everyone they are still the best the promotion has to offer.” -Jamie O’Doherty

While Yota Tsuji returned from excursion far ahead of his peers, I couldn’t help but feel there was something missing in his work. His aura was undeniable and his moveset was flashy, but his matches lacked a certain connective tissue. However, his encounter with Will Ospreay at Destruction in Kobe was a true star making performance. The return to at least some level of prominence for AJPW was one of the stories of 2023. I must say I would have liked to have watched more of it. But I did see some great matches from the promotion with a number of contenders missing out on the list. This match between Aoyagi on of the newer stars of the promotion and a man that had a good little run with the Triple Crown against Nakajima who had left NOAH just before and was ready to run riot in his new promotion. This was a high quality Japanese main event with awesome action sequences and the type of hard hitting that has become to be expected from Nakajima who became the new champion as the year began to wind down with a seemingly bright future for AJPW.” -Jason Turner

Okada vs. Takagi another guy that Okada works very well with they wrestled each other at Wrestle Kingdom 16 On January 4th 2022 and that match was excellent so when this match came to fruition I was really excited that it was even going to happen. This match wasn’t as high profile as the match that they had at Wrestle Kingdom for obvious reasons but this match in it’s own right was very good. This match was very plodding in a sense where Okada was taking his time to wear down Takagi. The match picks up later when Okada delivers a tombstone to Shingo on the outside of the ring. Back in the ring and Okada has Shingo on the ground choking the life out of him. Okada was on offense a lot during this match but when Shingo got the chance to be on offense he had to make the best out of the situation because it didn’t happen often. Kazuchika Okada then goes for a Rainmaker but it gets reversed and Shingo catches Okada with his own version of the move but his was more of a short-armed lariat. Later on Shingo hits the last of the Dragon for a near fall but Okada kicks out. Later on down the stretch Okada hits desperation Rain Maker but can’t capitalize as the two men are completely exhausted at this point. Later on Shingo hits the last of the dragon but Okada gets his shoulder up at the last possible second and that’s when the match reaches it’s peak as the energy in the building is off of the charts at this point. The match comes to an end when Okada sets Shingo up for a last ditch Rainmaker and hits it to secure the pinfall victory. This match was excellent and it was another great title defense for Okada in his reign with the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.” -Nathan Neumann

At 40, Rocky Romero might have had the best year of his career when looking at his 2023 terrorizing CMLL. Feuding with every top name in the promotion, Rocky brought out the best of everyone. Heated feuds in front of rabid crowds week after week. Rocky drew the ire of the fans ready to see him get taken down. A well traveled veteran having such a year this far into their career is so great to see.

On the other side is Mascara Dorada, the former Panterita del Ring Jr. Shedding his former identity and taking on the mantle of a character known for being the King of the Ropes, the new Mascara Dorada is only now beginning his career. Those paying attention have been seeing something truly special happening. Mascara Dorada at the time of this match was only two years into his career but he is improving at an unprecedented rate. Jaw dropping athleticism combined with unlimited creativity, every major match he had in 2023 saw him showing off new moves, discarding those that didn’t work, and refining his skills at an already main event level. There just is no one else where he’s at right now and his start to 2024 is already putting him into wrestler of the year category.

These two would face off in the finals of the Leyenda de Plata tournament. One fall only this time. The perfect pairing between a surging young upstart and a craft veteran rudo. Every time Mascara Dorada goes for his flashy offensive, he is cut off by Rocky. Rocky continually works his back and takes every chance to rile the crowd up with rudo antics. By the time Rocky hits the La de a caballo in a tournament honoring El Santo, the crowd is at a fevered pitch.

CMLL had a fantastic year full of weekly molten hot crowds packed into Arena Mexico. This was my favorite match of many from the year from them.” -BlastoSTG

The perfect party multi man tag. Kaito and Okada’s electric chemistry is the highlight once again but this did a lot to build up to a potential Okada vs Kento clash. In August of last year, I had the pleasure of attending my very first RevPro show in the UK. It was a great experience as I witnessed the epic showdown between Tomohiro Ishii and Luke Jacobs. In the words of Big E, this was two big meaty men slapping meat. Ishii ran his playbook for great matches: hard chops, hard strikes, fighting spirit, and big moves. Jacobs proved he can hang with a talent like Ishii, and I would love to see him do some tours with NJPW.” -Jeremy Donovan

Jacobs has been promising greatness for years. I thought he made good on that promise this year, but I didn’t expect matches of this calibre. “This match made waves across the “Gaijin” fandom and if you’re into traditional grappling the match is right up your alley. The drama, the struggle between them, the risk to try something in every new decision is a true masterpiece of simple basic wrestling. Two veterans, masters of their craft, having an equal match, grappling every inch and struggling with every move. This was an incredible showcase of everything great about pro-wrestling. It may not be the biggest venue or the biggest crowd, but GENTARO and Araken made me feel like they were the best in the world and nothing else mattered, only those two pro-wrestlers in the ring.

In 2023 my favourite version of Okada emerged. In 2012 he’d been the brash young upstart ready to take the crown. In 2016-18, he’d been the man setting the records with his legendary reign. In 2023 he was no longer the man trying to reach the mountaintop, he was the mountaintop. He was no longer overcoming challenges, he was the challenge to be overcome. He’d positioned himself as the heir to both Inoki and Misawa. If you wanted to prove yourself, he was the guy you were going to have to prove yourself against.

Historically champion v champion matches tended to end in time limit draws, double disqualifications or countouts, finishes that never showed one champion being better than the other. For this match there was no time limit, if the match had to go all night then it would, there would be a winner. As it turns out, they wouldn’t have even needed the traditional 60 minutes as, despite Kiyomiya showing some fire and strength, Okada beasted him, hitting the Cobra Flowsion and the rainmaker. As the ref counted two, Okada decided that he wasn’t done with the disrespect, pulling Kiyomiya up, hitting an enzigiri, another cobra flowsion and another rainmaker to put Kiyomya out of his misery.

As the final bell rang, the audience was left to wonder just who had the least respect for Kiyomiya now: Okada, the Noah bookers or Kiyomiya himself.” -Chris Gannon

A political masterpiece of biblical proportions. The amount of hatred in this thing was palpable. A complete disaster for Kaito who bit off way more than he could chew. Okada put in his best performance since WK 14 and just performed an absolute character assassination of Kaito here. Impactful, stunning and a sight to behold.” -Ashutosh Dubey

Another part of the Danielson world wrestling styles tour that we were all blessed to see in 2023. This was in the middle of his title program with MJF in which he somehow carried MJF and his baggage to all time program. All the matches in this run (Take, Bandido, Rush, MJF) are great and are all different styles. This was my favorite of the series. A classic lucha match in front of a super hot texas crowd, Danielson is playing the babyface chasing the dastardly, cowardly heel and needing to beat his hired tough man (Rush who is perfectly cast). Danielson breaks out the blood early and Rush is just transcendent. By far my favorite TV match of the year.” -Arturo Galletti

Apuestas matches are the best thing in wrestling, because the drama of real consequence is unbeatable. Winning an apuestas match is a huge honour, but comes with major risk. Just moments after beating Ultimo Guerrero and Averno to win a tag team tournament that forced rivals to work together, Angel de Oro made clear how seriously he was taking the stakes of the apuestas. He immediately set his sights on trying to rip Volador’s right arm clean off, setting in motion one of the most interesting arm matches I’ve ever seen. Volador delivered a virtuoso performance with one arm, adapting his beautiful aerial offence to his injury, while Oro targeted the arm without slowing down the pace of his electric arsenal of attacks. In an emotional display of guts and willpower, Volador Jr suffered through his Oro’s increasingly desperate assault until finally earning the right to humiliate his rival and take his hair.” -Jeff Martin

A match that needs the full story behind it to be fully appreciated. Not just in the traditional Feud buildup layers. There wasn’t a convoluted buildup anyway, and a major part can be viewed on this very show, with the prior match on the show leading directly into it, the Tag match determining who would compete in the Apuestas match on the biggest Lucha Show of the Year. Then things take a truly dramatic turn, with Volador suffering a legit broken arm and that sets the match on it’s head. Angel de Oro played an excellent rudo that brought the match to where it could reach the heights it did, from intimidating the doctor to going after Volador in a ruthless fashion. But it ultimately was the Volador show. He brought it up to the insane heights it did with the most impressive and memorable singular performance of his entire career and it led to the best match of the year taken as a whole not just in México, but of the entire world. The post match is also worth watching. It lacked the tragic emotion of the mask loss in the main event, but the tension was every bit as real and what continues the tradition of Luchas de Apuestas matches being the best type of match in all of wrestling.” -Dylan Fox

This was DDT giving the ball to Chris and trusting him to take the flag that Higuchi (literally) carried one year earlier. He takes it with gusto in a match that helped set DDT back on course after their main event scene went through an identity crisis for the first half of the year.” -Jamie O’Doherty

There are two levels here. Firstly, for those who have followed Brookes’ journey in DDT from his 2019 run where he got stuck in wrestling in an elephant camp, this title win was a wonderful climax, one that proved he could wrestle a main event style at the top of the industry. Brookes is a versatile wrestler, one who has always looked more comfortable wrestling with a bit of levity, but this was him at his most serious and hard-hitting. Indeed, this was the kind of match that I don’t want to see again because the headbutts were absolutely disgusting (maybe I’m getting worked here). That’s the other level, an outstanding match with great workrate (in the proper sense of the word) that started at a pace. Higuchi is becoming DDT’s MVP; his strikes and power moves never look any less phenomenal the more you see them. An awesome match that meant something. Just don’t do it every week, guys!” -Ewan Cameron

Masterful. Two consumate pros, holding 80,000 rabid European fans in the palm of my hand. I was fortunate enough to be ringside for this, and we lived every milisecond of this encounter. Utterly unique for 2023″ -Mark O’Brien

There will always be live experience bias in wrestling and, for me, Joe and Punk doing the dance in Wembley Stadium is my live experience bias for this year.

I enjoyed all of the matches at All In, but there was something about the opening match that stuck out to me that night, and still does today. Despite the “Real World’s Championship” not being a sanctioned title, the match was treated by both as if it was. It felt like an actual contest, and the two fight as the unique atmosphere of Wembley Stadium follows them throughout.

Even with the callbacks to Hogan’s hulk-up, John Cena’s five moves of doom, and of course, Terry Funk, it was a match worthy of getting the stage of over 70,000. At the time of me writing, it is unknown whether or not CM Punk returns to the ring, and truth to told: I don’t want him to return. This match is as a fitting end to his career as you can get, battling a storied rival to the biggest crowd of you’ve ever performed Infront of. CM Punk’s swan song and love letter to professional wrestling.

These two men are a dying breed of in-ring performers—there is no one out there like Samoa Joe or CM Punk when it comes to professional wrestling—and to see them wrestle together whilst I sat inside Wembley as a twenty-year old, who used to watch their Ring of Honor matches over and over, it’s a memory I’ll cherish forever.” -James Carlin
