“A dream match that lived up to the hype. I’m an unabashed Briscoes mark and this was the best match of the decade so far.” -Andrew Lacelle
“A match that signalled the new era of ROH by harkening back to the very best of the previous. In many ways, a match which represented what the Briscoes have always been; a bridge between eras, worlds, and fans. Will be viewed favourably by history as a critical match in the reaffirmation of ROH’s identity.” -Josh Creighton
“A match that exceeded it’s massive hype! The first encounter between FTR and Dem Boys absolutely tore the roof off of the venue and blew my mind, with nary a stipulation to be seen. To be honest, it was only narrowly edged out of the top spot in that feud’s trilogy by the sheer innovative violence of their Double-Dog-Collar 3rd encounter. This one set everything in motion for what would become my MOTY match, and almost took that spot itself.” -James “NuclearConvoy” Snelgrove
“What makes this match standout from the others on the same trilogy is that you can sense, little by little, how these two teams are creating magic in the ring. We should have seen it coming, since these are two of the best current tag teams, but they surpassed all expectations and kickstarted a now legendary trilogy.” -Paco Silva
“FTR had not really clicked in the ring for me in 2020 and 2021, save for a few bright spots here and there. However, this first match of their trilogy with the Briscoes changed that for me. The Briscoes are one of the greatest, most versatile tag teams in pro wrestling history, and they along w/ FTR took us all on a ride in this one. A match that started intense and only increased that intensity as the match went on, it became THE best tag team match of 2022 when all was said and done.” -Liam Renner
“For some pathetic reason, I tried to restrict myself to one of the trilogy on my ballot but how could I ignore this match? In all the dream matches touted for FTR, I wonder how many people thought of the Briscoes? This match was the dream match I didn’t know I wanted, but it was essentially perfect tag-team wrestling. They danced the line of hatred and respect perfectly, mixing FTR’s polished work with the purity of Briscoe’s intensity. A clear, traditional tag team structure performed by two all time tag teams who are able to blur the lines of heartless structure and reach an emotional level few achieve.” -Neil David
“The Dog Collar Match will be the definitive memory of the feud between the Briscoes and FTR, but I will remember this match as the peak of wrestling in 2022. The two best tag teams in the world reminded us how dramatic tag team wrestling can be.” -Kevin Ely
“The rocketship to FTR’s banner year. Another peerless outing by the Briscoes. A match so good the only way it could be outdone was by those involved running it again.” -Warren Hayes
“One of the best stories of 2022 told in three unbelievably excellent matches. The latter two were so spectacular, the first one is almost forgettable by comparison, but it’s still a truly genre-defining traditional tag team match. R.I.P. Jay Briscoe.” -Jeff Ahmed
“It’s truly incredible that a match that was lauded as perhaps being one of the best tag team matches ever turned out to only be the second best match between the participants this year.” -Jeff Martin
“A match that somehow lived up to the hype it was getting.” -Dean
“Lived up to the hype and more. Knew in the moment these two teams had something special.” -Jeremy Sexton
“The term dream match is overused in wrestling. However, this was a true dream match that exceeded expectations. We had two of the best tag teams in the world facing off for the first time. Everything about this match felt special: the atmosphere, the arena, the crowd, and even the first lock-up. Little did we know that was only the first of three incredible matches these teams would have in 2022. This will be a match that up-and-coming tag teams will study repeatedly.” -Jeremy Donovan
“From the minute these two teams locked eyes, you knew this match was going to be something special. My memory of this match isn’t the moves, spots or even passages of the match but instead, it is of a wild untamed energy that sat thick in the air and that led these four men to throw caution to the wind as they hurled their fists, elbows, shins, foreheads and at times entire bodies at one another.” -Sam Brown
“Could obviously go any order with the trilogy but I have them 1-3-2.” -Blake Murphy
“Sadly, by entering this late, my review of this match turned from unabashed praise to the mourning of Jay Briscoe. Jay was a phenomenal wrestler and an even better tag team wrestler. This match really cemented the return of ROH for me and FTR’s position as Tag Team of the year. But it’s the Briscoes that made this match sing. They always make the other team look good. In ROH, Impact, NWA, and local indies, they also made the other guys look better and have a fantastic match doing it. It’s a shame that 2022 was weirdly a breakout year for The Briscoes and Jay’s passing puts a damper on it for sure, but what this match and the whole trilogy ends up achieving is the cementation of the legacy of Jay Briscoe.” -Ryan Neitzey
“The table setter for maybe the greatest 3 match series of tag matches ever. Fantastic wrestling, no wasted motion, a throwback. Both teams came in here with a seriousness and a determination to win and prove who was the better team. The match was dripping in big fight feel, helped by the wonderful Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman who helped to elevate the match. Both Big Rig spots were fantastic, and I just love the noise the crowd makes when FTR finally hit it to get the win. Great stuff. But this wasn’t even my favourite FTR/Briscoes match of the year!” -Steven
“Just, the best. The intensity and sense of animosity before these two teams even touch is incredible and the action after the bell rings only enhances the vibes. It’s a masterclass on how to make pro wrestling feel real.” -Matthew Carlins
“Great first time match between two excellent teams.” -Joe Towner
“I mean I knew right away this match had match of the year potential right before even the bell ringing. Two of the best tag teams in the world in front of hot crowd filled with so much energy. To me it exceeded expectations. They had crowd invested throughout whole entire match there was moment of silence. The energy in this match was so great. It was amazing match. That is why it is the match of the year” -Filip Pejic
“The first-ever confrontation between these two teams, and the way they worked seamlessly together, you’d think that they’d squared off as rivals for the better part of a decade. The action was intense, and hard hitting, old-school insensibility, and full of tough-guy panache. And yet both teams brought a distinct style to this first, glorious contest – a precursor of more to come, which made each exchange viscerally hypnotic. This match brought a level of energy and intensity that ROH had not reached in a number of years – and was a stamp of what Tony Khan’s ROH era was going to deliver. But also, this felt like a high water mark for not just North American wrestling, but wrestling around the world, of what a match could inspire in the post-pandemic world of the sport.” -Reuel Castillo
“First time ever matchup hits it out of the park on the first try. FTR and The Briscoes collide and create a physical fight that just feels right. This is not an exhibition, these four men just don’t like each other and are willing and able to beat the shit out of each other for a paycheck and also for some tag team gold. It’s not about the moves, it’s about the unmatched flow drama, only aided by the fired up crowd. Dudes rock.” -Semi Salmikannas
“Ultimately went with FTR/Briscoes 1 as I love that it’s a traditional tag match at it’s core and there’s a tag match progression to it. The moment Bald gets color it goes to 11. The ending is so so good.” -Arturo Galletti
“One of the last tag team dream matches of recent years was crossed off the list in style this year and set the standard for tag teams this year. The Briscoes have been the constant in quality tag team wrestling over three different decades now- a team only surpassed in volume of great matches by the Bucks. In FTR they found a perfect matchup of anarchic and physical tag team wrestling. You can only do the first time once, and they managed to meet incredibly high expectations.” -Dave Ryan
“An amazing clash of styles with a lot of creativity between this two teams in an intense as hell tag team match” -Jorge Romo
“The opening verse of what would become FTR’s 2022, quite possibly the best year a tag team has ever had. This match has the hallmarks of the traditional tag team matches from “the good old days” with a 2022 edge to it. I will never forget the visual of all 4 wrestlers on the floor laid out in amongst the final stretch that felt like it went forever and it was great for it. Nothing is out of place in this match. Just wonderful and really close to the pairs best match from Final Battle in quality.” -Peter Edge
“There are so many angles to approach this match. The most obvious is that, in a vacuum, it’s a masterpiece of tag team wrestling. Due to the circumstances of the Briscoes being unable to appear on AEW television, much of the heavy lifting for this match’s build was done on Twitter and through the mere idea of what this match could be. When these two teams finally got together, it all clicked as the ‘what-if’ became a thesis for tag team excellence, written by two teams out to prove why they should be considered the best in the world. But then step out of the moment and look at the bigger picture, and there’s so much more going on. ROH had just been purchased by Tony Khan, and there was uncertainty as to what the company could even look like in 2022. Could ROH be a viable brand in a crowded marketplace? Did Khan buy ROH just for its assets and tape library? All those questions were answered with a match that stole the show, not just for Supercard of Honor, but arguably for all of Mania Week itself. The signature spot of this match, a big suplex from the apron, underscored that what these men were fighting for really mattered. It was important to them, and it should be important for all of us. This turned into an instant classic that reminded everyone of the psychotic Briscoes matches in ROH’s glorious past, as well as being a return to form for Ring of Honor moving forward. ROH was alive, and its heartbeat was going to be driven by this FTR/Briscoes rivalry.” -TDE
“I hate FTR, but god damn it did I love this match.” -Case Lowe
“Where this epic tale of tag team philosophy began. Just phenomenal level of effort and story that built from FInal Battle with virtually no presentation other than the concept of the ultimate ROH invaders who were eventually adopted as the hometown team. This match just HAD to live up to expectation and it didn’t disappoint one bit.” -MR JAMES TRUEPENNY
“We all knew that these teams were both great on their own, but their ability to put together a brutal, compelling match was excellent and kicked off a three-match series that is on-par with any tag team trilogy in wrestling history.” -Tyler Forness
“ROH was near death until Tony Khan bought it. He was kinda obligated to put this show on before he’d even had much of a chance to kick the tires on his new promotion. FTR and The Briscoes delivered. Such a dramatic match. The third FTR match on my list and second ROH match. They’d go on to top this with the dog collar match. I would rate the 2/3 falls just outside my top 10.” -Eric Krol
“Until the dog collar match happened, I thought this was the best tag team match of the year. The atmosphere alone felt incredibly special, as the crowd was super hot from the entrances to the finish. FTR and the Briscoes did not let a second of this dream match go to waste. It was action packed from beginning to end, there was blood, intensity, dramatic nearfalls, great tag team wrestling. Tremendous stuff.” -Andrew Rich
“An awesome, incredible match that overdelivered in every way, shape, and form. Awesome crowd.” -Bryan Rose
“The best tag team of the year in one heck of a story driven match with two of the most established names of the promotion? Yeah, this match absolutely delivers a heck of an experience!” -SamTheVAMod
“Another Briscoes vs. FTR match appears on my list because well why not? Their matches against each other are that good! This was the first match that these two teams had against each other and it took place during Wrestlemania Weekend and it was the one match that people couldn’t wait to see. The fans in attendance couldn’t wait for this match to begin as they greeted it with “Holy Shit” chants right from the start. This match was so much fun to watch it was the match during Wrestlemania weekend that I was most looking forward to and I couldn’t wait to see it for myself and it didn’t just deliver it over delivered on every expectation that I had. I don’t like to get my hopes up for wrestling matches or even shows for that matter anymore because I’m often disappointed but this match didn’t disappoint me one bit. It was a first time meeting between The Briscoes who some (myself included would consider to be tag team legends) and FTR a team that are arguably the best tag team in wrestling today. This match did so much to elicit emotion it gave me chills at points during the match it was from top to bottom one of the best matches of the year. Tag Team Wrestling when done right is a wonderful thing and this match for me checked off all of the boxes. So do yourself a favor if you haven’t seen this match yet (have you been living under a rock for the last year) go watch this match because you wont be disappointed.” -Nathan Neumann
“The first ROH PPV of the Tony Khan era featured a classic that set the standard for what this new version of ROH would be. A top to bottom card that was a bit of a mystery vortex akin to a latter-day ECW PPV where you have a couple matches known before as a hook and the rest is a surprise – but this bout made it easy to see that an ROH show would always be worth the cost of admission even if it was a one-match show. FTR and The Briscoes battled in their first-ever match and saw the ROH stalwarts lose their titles again and begin the ascent of FTR as the arguable best tag team of 2022 with a career-best run that celebrated how gifted they are in the ring.” -Jeremy Peeples
“Quite simply, this was a perfect tag team match. It was filled with emotion, fight and importance, every second being packed with meaning. It takes a special kind of match to feel like every motion was meaningful, but this match managed it. There are countless elements of the match that can be isolated and talked about non-stop, but the blood was perhaps the greatest. In this match, it elevated the action, adding an extra spark to a fire that was already ablaze.” -Jamie Johnson
“Well I didn’t had a chance to watch it live. When I woke up , internet was freaking out. I knew that I needed to check this out. In the end , I watched a classic. There is not much to say. This is pure wrestling and as long as , guys like FTR and Briscoes are doing it , I am all in for it.” -Kaan Ünverdi
“A sign of things to come in a great rivalry” -Jeff Schwartz
“We sometimes see matches live up to the hype, or even surpass it. Rarely though does a bout totally eclipse its own reputation. I was worried at the opening bell when Dax Harwood stepped out of the ring to high five a few fans, as if the match was already guaranteed to deliver. It’s like he knew what was about to happen.
There are great complex wrestling matches and great simple wrestling matches, but this managed to be both at once. A lot of planning clearly went into it, but just as much attention was paid to the finer details as the high spots. Dax’s use of a closed fist meant just as much as Mark Briscoe’s elbow drop from the apron.
Throughout, neither FTR nor The Briscoes ever lost that sense of spontaneity, of adapting strategy on the fly, or of allowing their emotions to influence their decisions. In true old-school fashion, this felt like a legitimate contest that devolved into a malicious brawl. Perfection.” -Jack G. King
“The first of a series of three great fucking matches. There’s no other way to describe this series besides great. This first one worked because these teams mesh so well and it seemed like a fight from beginning to end. It was intense and you could guess that it was going to get hardcore and gorier as the series went by. I think the third one is better and it had more of an impact on me when I watched it, but this one is not lesser. If I call the third one 5 stars, this is 4.75. Just great pure tag team pro wrestling.” -Abraham Delgado
“The first one and probably the best one in my opinion, this Tag Team dream match definitely lived up to the hype, and then they did it two more times!” -Adam Darwin
“Second FTR vs Briscoes match in this list, this is the first time they wrestle each other and was a tremendous experience, the crowd in Garland was HOT and ready to received a high caliber match and they received just that.” -Diego Garcia
“When FTR had a heated (and awesome) confrontation with The Briscoes at Final Battle 2021, many wondered where the match would happen, or even if it would ever happen. Well, fortunately for all of us, Tony Khan kept Ring Of Honor alive, and we finally did get to see this dream tag team match during WrestleMania Weekend. The anticipation was certainly high, and when the dust settled, they totally smashed expectations. The crowd was electric right from the jump, and these two teams delivered some awesome action from start to finish. FTR ultimately emerged victorious in what was without question one of the best tag team matches in the history of ROH (and think of the ground that covers). These two teams absolutely killed it, and little did we know that it would just be part one of one of the best trilogies in recent memory.” -Sean Sedor
“It was hard to imagine the Briscoes and FTR topping their first match, and they did it, arguably twice. This is the kind of year FTR has long sought, getting to face quality opponents all over the world. Now that ROH will be on Honor Club with a weekly show, the Briscoes should be back on the wrestling map in 2023.” -Greg Parks
“Quite simply an exceptional tag team match. No notes.” -Mark Robinson
“A near-perfect tag match that blended old-school psychology with modern pacing and moves.” -Ryan Dilbert
“The Briscoes and FTR were made to wrestle each other. That’s for certain. What is also certain is that they managed to have two of the very best tag team matches all year with the second of their three-match series also being excellent. The first Tony Khan-ran Ring of Honor proved to be a hit because of this match and this match alone. Truthfully I don’t remember anything else from this show and that’s okay. This is tag team excellence at its finest and somehow only the second best match between these two teams.” -Scott Edwards
“A dream tag match in every way. Big fight feel and energy from the crowd as we get a classic slow but deliberate pace to start as both teams test the water. Eventually FTR is able to isolate, bloody and work over Jay before he gets the hot tag to Mark. Back and forth action as the pace quickens and both teams get big near-falls. FTR is able to counter the Doomsday Device, get Mark alone and hit The Big Rig for the win! An amazing match that still leaves so much more room for a rematch. It was perfect tag team wrestling!” -Alexander Charles Kalil
“This was a clinic put on by both these teams proving that The Briscoes and FTR are two of the best teams to ever do it.” -Daniel Kuchler
