Our match of the week is Speed Muscle vs. Rey Bucanero & Ultimo Guerrero, on June 23, 2008 (airdate June 26), from Orlando, Florida (TNA).
Two of the most decorated worldwide tag teams of the era squared off in this fast-paced tag bout at the 2008 World X Cup, the third (and last to date) “World” branded TNA/Impact X Cup tournament, which TNA/Impact/GFW has run semi-regularly under different formats since 2003.
Doi, Yoshino, Milano Collection A.T., and Puma (TJ Perkins) represented Team Japan in the tournament, with Averno and Volador Jr joining Bucanero & Guerrero on Team Mexico. Team Mexico would go on to win the tournament, which was technically the first World X Cup win for Mexico, but Team Mexico also won the 2004 America’s X Cup, which was similar in format to the ensuing 2004, 2006, and 2008 World X Cups. Team USA won the 2004 & 2006 World X Cups. The 2003, 2005, 2017, and 2021 Super X Cups were singles tournaments as opposed to using international teams.
