Our match of the week is Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty vs. Buddy Rose & Doug Somers, for the AWA World Tag Team Titles, on August 30, 1986, from Las Vegas, Nevada (AWA).

It’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall Of Fame season, so for the next few weeks, we’re going to use Match Of The Week to highlight some of the most famous matches of select candidates. This week, we take a look at the (Midnight) Rockers, Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty, and what was perhaps their best match ever.

In what was probably the last great rivalry of the AWA, the Midnight Rockers spent 1986 battling Buddy Rose & Doug Somers all over the territory, the back half of which chasing the AWA tag team titles that Rose & Somers beat Scott Hall & Curt Hennig for in May. This bloody brawl, which aired on ESPN on September 2, is widely considered to be one of the best tag team matches of the 1980s. Four months later, on Christmas, the two teams headlined “Brawl In St. Paul” (which drew anywhere from 3500 to 8000 fans depending on the source, and I would err on the side of the former), with a cage match that some consider to be even better than the ESPN bout. All told, the Midnight Rockers vs Rose & Somers feud is not only one of the best tag team rivalries of the 1980s, but one of the best feuds of the 80s, period.

Everyone involved is great in this match, with Rose & Somers delivering the vicious beating, Michaels & Jannetty drawing sympathy, and even Rod Trongard, one of the worst announcers of the era, putting in the best performance of his career on the call.
