STARDOM
MIDSUMMER CHAMPIONS 2022 in Nagoya
JULY 24, 2022
Nagoya Congress Center Event Hall
Nagoya City, JAPAN

WATCH: TBD (Available on Stardom World a few days after PPV airs)

Hanan vs. Hina vs. Waka Tsukiyama vs. Akane Fujita

The opening match of MidSummer Champions 2022 in Nagoya will see the Future of Stardom Champion, Hanan, take on her sister Hina, the winless Waka Tsukiyama, and Prominence’s Akane Fujita in a fatal four-way. There’s not much to talk about here other than Hanan having defeated both Hina and Tsukiyama in Future of Stardom Championship defenses but seeing Fujita step in there as a singles wrestler is interesting. Prediction: Hanan

Saya Iida vs. Suzu Suzuki

A 5★STAR Grand Prix teaser is set for this one as Saya Iida will take on Suzu Suzuki in singles action. Both women will enter the tournament next weekend with it being Suzuki’s first and it’ll mark Iida’s return after having to miss the 2021 tournament due to injury. The most interesting development came this past weekend as Suzu Suzuki officially won Pro Wrestling WAVE’s Catch The Wave tournament and the Regina di WAVE Championship in succession. She did, however, have to pull out of a show due to injury so it remains to be seen how much that affects her. Plain and simple, these two are really good wrestlers and should provide one of the best undercard matches in STARDOM this year with an opportunity to gain momentum on the line. Prediction: Suzu Suzuki

Mayu Iwatani & Momo Kohgo vs. Ruaka & Fukigen Death

Mayu Iwatani continues her streak of not-so-important matches as she teams with Momo Kohgo to face Oedo Tai’s Ruaka and Fukigen Death. Iwatani and Kohgo have displayed some excellent tag team chemistry as of late (despite losing) which could lead them to be a team for Tag League later in the year. Anyways, this is just another tag. Prediction: Mayu Iwatani & Momo Kohgo

Natsupoi, Unagi Sayaka & Mina Shirakawa vs. Utami Hayashishita, Lady C & Miyu Amasaki vs. Risa Sera, Hiragi Kurumi & Mochi Natsumi in a Captain’s Fall Match

Cosmic Angels vs. Queen’s Quest vs. Prominence. How about that? Natsupoi, Utami Hayashishita, and Risa Sera will lead their teams into battle for an elimination Captain’s Fall match. As we’ve seen over the last number of months, STARDOM has leaned on these over-the-top-rope elimination matches to fill out their shows and it often leads to plenty of entertainment. One captain needs to last and the interesting conversation here is how Prominence might actually have the advantage. They travel and work together exclusively week in and week out. Natsupoi just joined the Cosmic Angels and let’s recognize that this isn’t the A-Team of Queen’s Quest that Hayashishita will be leading out there. Anyone could win but let’s go with the chemistry here (and a team who has an any means necessary mindset). Prediction: Risa Sera, Hiragi Kurumi & Mochi Natsumi

Goddess of Stardom Championship
Hazuki & Koguma (c) vs. MIRAI & Ami Sourei

On July 2, FWC and God’s Eye went to a 30-minute draw with the Goddess of Stardom Championship on the line. Immediately after the match, Hazuki and Koguma were ready to defend the belts against them once again with the goal of their being a clear winner in the rematch.

FWC has been one of the best tag teams of the last 365 days and they should not be losing their titles this soon in their second reign. Unfortunately for them, they face the team of MIRAI and Ami Sourei, two wrestlers who have followed Syuri’s lead in God’s Eye to being incredibly dominant. Their record as a duo is 3-0-2, giving them the confidence to potentially gain the Goddess of Stardom Championship at MidSummer Champions 2022 in Nagoya. When looking at the five title matches on the night, this one is as much of a toss-up as the rest. Let’s hope it is infinitely better than the draw. Prediction: Hazuki & Koguma

Artist of Stardom Championship
Momo Watanabe, Starlight Kid & Saki Kashima (c) vs. Giulia, Maika & Himeka

The Artist of Stardom Championship has been on fire when it comes to delivering great match after great match over the last few months. Momo Watanabe, Starlight Kid, and Oedo Tai’s ultimate weapon Saki Kashima will look to make their second defense of the title against Donna del Mondo’s unquestionable top trio of Giulia, Maika, and Himeka.

Kashima has been the main reason Oedo Tai holds those titles, using her Revival roll-up to defeat the record-breaking champions MaiHime Poi and survive the triple threat trios bout as they defended against God’s Eye and Donna del Mondo. This, however, will be the toughest challenge to date for them. Giulia, Maika, and Himeka are as good a trio as anyone and probably enter the match as the favorites rather than the underdogs, even as the challengers. The game plan going into these matches is to take out Kashima to the point where she cannot steal the win. If Donna del Mondo can make this happen, the Artist of Stardom Championship is as good as there’s. But as we’ve seen, Kashima never fails to survive just enough to steal a win. She’s the focus and all eyes will be on her performance. Prediction: Momo Watanabe, Starlight Kid & Saki Kashima

High-Speed Championship
AZM (c) vs. Rina

The High-Speed Championship reign of AZM has been nothing short of tremendous. She has not only been everything you want as a champion but has created memorable defense after memorable defense with various opponents inside and outside of STARDOM. Her next challenge is an interesting one as Rina steps into the High-Speed division for the very first time. The challenge was made following AZM’s successful defense against Momo Kohgo, attacking AZM the moment she got her title in her hands to celebrate the win. Rina is 15 years old and has a bright future in wrestling ahead of her, but can she make sure that future becomes the present with a title win?

It shouldn’t be out of the question as it will be tough for AZM to pregame for an opponent who has rarely showcased her high-speed skills before but there’s little reason to believe the High-Speed Champion will be losing the belt here. The dominance and consistency should be too much for Rina to overcome, meaning it should result in V6 for AZM. Prediction: AZM

Wonder of Stardom Championship
Saya Kamitani (c) vs. SAKI

Saya Kamitani has been as good as anyone in STARDOM this year, if not better. Her Wonder of Stardom Championship reign has been a shining reason as to why STARDOM has managed to keep up their momentum as well with each and every defense being more must-see than the previous one. And now she will get a huge test as she defends the title against COLOR’S SAKI.

SAKI is a former Actwres girl’Z Champion, showcasing her ability to lead by example prior to forming COLOR’S. And while making a case for SAKI is a tad bit tougher than previous challengers to Kamitani’s title, her résumé is what gives her a chance more than anything else. With her entry into the 5★STAR Grand Prix and alliance with the Cosmic Angels, SAKI isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and should be a part of STARDOM for the foreseeable future. Winning the Wonder of Stardom Championship would only cement that further. But again, this is Saya Kamitani.

“The Golden Phoenix” has been the standard in STARDOM this year and has KAIRI in her sights, meaning this should be another successful title defense and confirmation that Kamitani enters the tournament as champion. Prediction: Saya Kamitani.

World of Stardom Championship
Syuri (c) vs. Tam Nakano

The main event of MidSummer Champions 2022 in Nagoya will see Syuri defend the World of Stardom Championship against Cosmic Angels leader, Tam Nakano.

It should go without saying but this match is as big as it gets one week out from the 5★STAR Grand Prix. Perhaps bigger than any usual title match. Nakano has been catapulted back to her road to glory since completing her battles with Natsupoi. Natsupoi’s decision to join Cosmic Angels has given Nakano a new confidence she hasn’t had since losing the Wonder of Stardom Championship to Saya Kamitani at the end of 2021. Confidence that may set her up to dethrone Syuri from the top of STARDOM.

There’s no big need for a multi-tweet thread by Nakano this time around. This isn’t a personal blood feud for Nakano but a goal to become World of Stardom Champion for the first time in her career. Nakano painted the Wonder of Stardom Championship in her own shade during her reign. If she can end the Vermillion Era of STARDOM by taking down the most unstoppable wrestler in the promotion’s history, then what does that make Nakano? Undeniable.

Syuri isn’t going to be a tough one to crack. Few have been able to do it. The people Syuri has defeated in her reign as champion is among the elite in pro wrestling today. Utami Hayashishita, Giulia, Mayu Iwatani, MIRAI, Himeka, Risa Sera, and Momo Watanabe have all tried and failed. Adding Nakano to the list only continues to solidify herself amongst STARDOM’s all-time greats.

Syuri and Tam Nakano have only battled one-on-one once and it was during the 2021 5★STAR Grand Prix. Syuri walked out with the win.

Can she do it again? It’s tough to doubt the champion. Prediction: Syuri
