From learning about Sports odds to understanding the rules and athletes in the WWE, wrestling can be an extremely captivating sport.
As well-respected as some professional female wrestlers are, it’s clear that many women in the WWE are still having to prove that they belong in the sport.
Here are 5 of the most notable female wrestlers of all time.
The Fabulous Moolah
In the world of women’s wrestling, there will always be one irrefutable legend that remains head and shoulders above the rest, and her name is The Fabulous Moolah.
She was a trailblazer who pushed the boundaries of female wrestling like no other. Moolah also went on to establish a legacy that ensured her name was synonymous with women’s wrestling in a decades-long career.
In terms of her wrestling style, The Fabulous Moolah had a flawless technique. Every move was well-executed but lacked athleticism, and instead relied on an additional flash of nastiness that made her heavy on the hair-pulling.
Her WWE-recognized title reign lasted for 10,170 days. She was also the first woman to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1995 and is also a member of the NWA Hall of Fame and the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Trish Stratus
Trish Stratus began as a compelling worker and began her time in WWE as a manager. In the mid-noughties, however, she quickly rose through the ranks to become the Queen of the Ring.
To wrestling fans, Stratus is the best thing to come out of Canada since Maple Syrup. She has had an illustrious career, solidified her spot as a wrestling icon, and has worked to inspire countless other women to venture into professional wrestling. Simply, she was a once-in-a-generation talent.
Notably, Trish Stratus marked a before and after in women’s wrestling. She completely revolutionized women in wrestling by establishing the powerful, attractive, and smart angle that WWE employs today. Her influence paved the way for a stronger female representation in wrestling.
She was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. She also happens to have won the Women’s Championship an incredible seven times!
Lita
Lita got her start as a manager in WWE. However, thanks to her agility, risk-taking tendencies, and her groundbreaking talent, Lita went on to take the wrestling world by storm.
She proved that having a pretty face does not prevent you from being strong – and became a trendsetter for her beliefs both in and out of the ring.
Lita will always be linked to Trish Stratus because of their feud that went on to define both of their careers. Just like Trish, Lita was a mainstay of women’s wrestling in her era; becoming a four-time Women’s Champion and earning many other accolades before making a return to management to finish her career.
In the ring, Lita mixed Lucha libre-inspired moves with hammering away at her opponent with her fists. After seeing her moves in action, it may come as no surprise to find out just how popular she became, and why this popularity remains.
After her retirement, Lita was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014.
Chyna
Chyna’s accomplishments went way beyond the ring, but it was wrestling that established her superstar status. She worked to redefine the place women had in the world of professional wrestling and was later exalted as one of the all-time greatest in the sport.
Dubbed the first lady of sports entertainment, Chyna was the first big name in female wrestling for the WWE. In her short career, she was able to cross more boundaries than many other wrestlers can lay claim to.
She was the first woman to ever enter the Royal Rumble, wrestle in the King of Ring tournament, and win the WWE Intercontinental Championship. As a result, she left a lasting legacy as one of the strongest and most dominant female wrestlers.
After joining the then-named World Wrestling Federation, she won the WWF Intercontinental Championship twice. As a member of D-Generation X, Chyna was also inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019
Sasha Banks
Sasha Banks has remained one of the top wrestlers since her days in NXT, where she was quick to make a name for herself for not only being talented in the ring but also for her ability to sell storylines and cut promos. Both of these enabled her to become one of the greatest heels the WWE has ever seen.
As a five-time Raw Women’s champion with over 10 titles to her name, Banks is a highly decorated female wrestler in the WWE. She continues to be recognized for her talents and was recently named Wrestler of the Year in 2020.
Sasha Banks has also achieved lots of mainstream success outside of wrestling. Most recently, she appeared on the new show The Mandalorian which is set in the Star Wars universe and was also the third most tweeted about female athlete in 2021.
And while injuries have impacted her career, Banks has returned with a vengeance time and time again to prove that her abilities are still in a league of their own.
Summary
Many amazing female wrestlers have made their mark on the WWE company. Female talent has only increased in recent years, to the point where women are currently experiencing the greatest period in wrestling history.
