“Who could have possibly thought this match, in this building, in this year was possible as they were filling out ballots for MOTY 2020? Does this require any kind of in depth explanation? It was Kenny Omega versus Bryan Danielson… the REAL Bryan Danielson… the goddamn AMERICAN DRAGON. I have listened to Danielson’s All Out speech a number of times, and while his reasons for being in AEW ring more true by the week, this was the mission statement… a thesis of violence. “Hey, did you know Daniel Bryan had to retire due to brain trauma?” Kenny Omega responds: “V-TRIGGEEEERRRRRRRRR”. While the thirty minute draw was something to behold in totality, Kenny Omega running down the ramp with glee in anticipation of obliterating Danielson’s face is a moment I will never forget. When the crowd is losing its mind simply due to the fact the wrestlers have entered the ring, you have to work really hard to mess it up. They capitalized on that atmosphere. This was a special moment between two of the four on my Rushmore.” -Andrew Stewart
“There isn’t a lot to be said for these guys: they’re simply two of the smartest and most athletic wrestlers in the world and this match is a joy to watch.” -Brian Moore
“I feel a little embarrassed not to be placing this at number one, as this was my Match of the Year until so recently that I actually wrote a For Your Consideration piece on the match published right here at VOW. Even though it lost the top spot I stand by everything I argued in the piece. This dream match delivered on every level, and lived up to expectations not only in the ring, but in creating a spectacle that felt unlike anything else in wrestling this year and arguably for the last several years, at least in the US. On the biggest stage in AEW’s history, Omega and Danielon brought the gravitas necessary to invest this non-title match with the stakes deserving of fans’ anticipation. Then they brought the violence to match. These two guys are such great wrestlers that they somehow managed to make a workrate classic out of a match in which they visibly withheld their best stuff. So much was left on the table here that I can only assume there’s a rematch with even more intense action in our near future, and I’ll be expecting that match to make my list next year. We’ll see if they can live up to the hype once again.” -Casey Fiore
“The problem with dream matches is that it creates an inordinate amount of pressure on its participants to deliver. Fortunately for the fans, two of the best wrestlers ever were able to work together to put together one of the best television matches ever in this half hour draw.” -Fred Morlan
“Danielson came into AEW with a chip on his shoulder and a desire to prove that he could still hang with the best – and wound up delivering an all-time great match with Omega. They did battle once before in ROH, but both men were far more seasoned with this outing and it showed. In a career full of incredible matches, both Danielson and Omega gave it everything in what on-paper looked like an incredible match and delivered in a major way.
Danielson showed that the American Dragon of ROH was back workrate-wise, with more of the physical presence that he picked up in WWE. Much like Piper in his prime in the land of the giants, he didn’t just fly around and made sure he came across as a physical threat at all times. Their dream match resulted in a time limit draw – but cemented that Danielson had a lot more left in the tank than anyone could have imagined based on how his WWE run ended.” -Jeremy Peeples
“This may be my new go-to match to hook a new fan on professional wrestling. To quote Bryan Danielson: “One thing I truly believe: You show excellent professional wrestling to anybody and they’ll enjoy it, because excellent professional wrestling is fucking awesome”” -Kevin Ely
“The best technical wrestling match I’ve seen all year. The chemistry between Danielson and Omega was unparalleled and it’s my favorite AEW Dynamite match of all-time. How we even got this match on free TV is still astounding today. I’ve mentioned this before in other match of the year retrospectives online, but this match honestly felt like a impassioned love letter to the flourishing independent scene of the 2000s, and the success of its stars on a mainstream stage during the 2010s. Danielson and Omega were ringleaders in their own right prior to joining AEW, and you can see how much they’ve changed their wrestling styles since they last met in the ring over a decade ago.” -Caro
“Not many matches are advertised as being a dream match and realistically deserves the title. This match more then deserved the moniker and to think it was on FREE TV to boot. The hype for this match was palpable. It’s something when a regular Wednesday night show, feels like a major show. This match is largely the reason for that. This was so special as both men are easily in my top 5 of all time. Being someone who got into alternative wrestling through mid 00’s ROH, Danielson has always been someone I’ve been enthralled by. He just had this ability to work absolutely anyone in any style match at such a high caliber. From Necro Butcher to Roderick Strong, KENTA to Spanky, it didn’t matter who you had on the opposite end, he would put the work in to deliver something of quality. When he finally got signed to WWE, he even surpassed expectations there. He was a man that largely made the best of a bad situation and worked to their house style better then anyone else. When he finally did get his roses by the company, it felt cathartic and deserved (even if they did so unwillingly). I can’t deny though, even with working higher then most in that company, I questioned if he was capable of being the same wrestler he was pre-WWE. My main concern was his prior injuries and seeing so many talented guys leave that company become stuck with their house style after leaving. I should have had more faith, because if anyone was going to have something of prior caliber with the American Dragon, it was going to be Kenny. Omega, who like the 00’s Bryan who came before, is so incredibly versatile and proficient. Any shred of doubt was wiped away as soon as they first touched. I remember being at such the edge of my seat, my buddy had commented it had been 20 minutes and it completely felt like it had only been five. I could go on about moves, but it really wasn’t about that. This match felt like a complete return of form for Danielson. It felt like the American Dragon was finally truly back and not the WWE watered down version we were given. A man who at one time would have said was my all time favorite wrestler.” -Chris Duarte
“Two of the best wrestlers of all time facing off in the best TV setting of 2021. This match held back and it was still better than anything else to happen in 2021. This cemented the cases of both to be two of the best wrestlers of all time.” -Jack Murphy
“Dream match that lived up to the billing. Violent, dramatic and on the big stage. Rebirth of Bryan Danielson after over a decade constrained by WWE system.” -Kevin Chiat
“This match aired during one of the roughest weeks of my life. As I turned on Dynamite that Wednesday, I needed a miracle of a match to rejuvenate me, to make me feel something. For 30 straight minutes, Danielson and Omega reminded me why I give so much of my free time to this sport. Omega, once again underlining his place as one of the all time greats. Danielson, recapturing lightning in a bottle, reminding us why he has been one of the most beloved performers by the most hardcore of fans for over two decades. And me? I was left watching this like so many classics I’ve seen in my time — Sting/Flair at the Clash, Misawa and Kawada on a 5th gen VHS tape, Kobashi and Joe live in NYC — a pure and utter fan, living and dying by every near fall, every twist and turn. And what was even more exciting? You knew they still had more to give us. Incredible match.” -Marty Day
“I’m not going to say anything no one’s heard about this match before. It seems impossible that a dream match with ridiculously high expectations actually surpassed those expectations, went a full 60 minutes, and still left me feeling like there was more for them to do. Every note of this match was pitch perfect: it was paced well, both wrestlers knew how to play to the crowd (and what a crowd!), there were no wasted spots. AEW brought Bryan Danielson to wrestle, and this was a guy who sees himself as the best wrestler in the world vs. the champion, the de facto best wrestler in the world. A simple story told expertly.” -Paul DeBenedetto
“The dream match that many of us waited years to happen. The match had the same energy as Hogan vs. Rock at Mania X8, but with better in-ring work.” -Juan Carlos Reneo
“There didn’t feel like a bigger match in Wrestling this year.” -Rich Latta II
“A match I can’t be objective about. Bryan Danielson is my favourite wrestler of all time. I went to a WWE Live event here in Finland for the mere chance of seeing him wrestle live for one time in my life. And I hadn’t watched a match of his since early 2020, just couldn’t do it.
And then Daniel Bryan died and Bryan Danielson was reborn. And he went straight back to the mountain top.
A dream match in almost every sense of the word. Thirty minutes of pure bliss. Pure joy from beginning to end. A showcase for the best wrestler in the world. A match that deserves every accolade thrown it’s way.
Bryan Danielson is the best wrestler in the world. That message was loud and clear after this.” -Semi Salmikannas
“This match was picture perfect. The incredibly unique atmosphere of Arthur Ashe stadium and the insanely hot crowd, who was anticipating this bout so hard that they popped at the initial collar and elbow tie up like The Rock had just shown up, helped make this truly something special.
But even without any of that, Kenny and Bryan simply delivered a mat classic that told an incredible story centered around the idea that these two are arguably the best in the world. The time limit draw in this case helped continue to articulate that narrative, as no one had a clear advantage when it expired. That is storytelling.” -Will Washington
“Bryan in his promos asked for the ‘best bout machine’, not the shithead that hangs out with Don Callis, and that’s exactly what we got as Omega produces the most reigned in performance of his title run with his worst mannerisms kept to a minimum and these two delivered on their dream match build. The match was well laid out with a great story, the strikes were strong and clean, the crazy bumps were there, Omega’s offence looked killer, there were hints of classic ROH Danielson with the Cattle Mutilation, they never once went for the cheap out with Elite interference – there was nothing not to love here. We all knew the draw was coming, but it doesn’t come off as disappointing because it’s the right booking call and the match was a breeze to watch at 30 minutes. I really enjoyed how the match didn’t fall into the trope of having someone 2 seconds away from victory when the time limit comes – Bryan and Omega were locked in a brawl of punches as the match ended with no clear indication of who would have won with more time on the clock. I love that, and I’m more interested in a rematch because of it. The end result is the best television match of 2021. I think my favourite thing about the match was that for what felt like the first time in 10 years, Bryan wasn’t presented as an underdog. He was presented as someone who is best in the world level who could go toe to toe with AEW’s almost year long world champion. That was so refreshing to see and got me pumped up even more for this next chapter of his career.” -Ed Mills
“One reason why I wasn’t really high on Kenny’s title run was that it always felt like he wrestled down to the level of his opponents. Enter Bryan Danielson. Kenny Omega finally has an opponent of his calibre and all he has to do now is wrestle. Everything they did was so stiff and Kenny was like an absolute assassin here.” -Ashutosh Dubey
“Simply put, Kenny Omega vs Bryan Danielson was a stellar 30min draw. It never ceased to engage (not always simple for a 30minute match), as it truly kept you interested for the full time. The raucous, packed Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd, and the added specialty of seeing Danielson in this environment added so much to what would’ve been a thrilling match no matter the setting. This was a special match, indeed.” -Jamie Johnson
“I hate time limit draws. Loathe them. But… AEW has made me take a step back on that opinion. They’ve made the time limit draw become an actual finish instead of a cop out, and this match is what did it. Two of the greatest pro wrestlers of all time out there doing pro wrestling.” -Ed Kody
“Two of the best to ever do it, in a dream match no one ever thought would happen, going the absolute distance and neither man looking to lessen the pace as it built towards an end that promised so much future excitement. Almost a perfect match.” -James “NuclearConvoy” Snelgrove
“I became a wrestling fan in 2015 thanks to Daniel Bryan. Seeing this match made me realize that I had been robbed of seeing the best wrestler in the world, and maybe the best wrestler of all-time, for the past 6 years. I thought my resentment for WWE could grow no larger, but then Bryan Danielson shows up on my TV without a governor and has a classic in front of 20,000 screaming fans.” -Brady Childs
“The expectations were high on that one. It gave the audience what they wanted. I really like the fact that it ended with a draw. It was the right booking decision. They protected both guys who are top performers of the company. I am glad that Bryan left WWE. Thanks to that we can see him in his full potential. From the start to the end it felt excitement. That’s one of those matches were it hypes you up, no matter how many times you see it. They blow of the crowd and made them go crazy. People were booing after it ended because they wanted to see it more. Can’t blame them for this. To be honest when you have two guys like Kenny and Bryan in a match , you don’t want to see it end. They pulled nearly everything in their arsenal but also protected their finishing moves which is the right thing to do. AEW presented one of the best TV matches on that day.” -Kaan Ünverdi
“Dream Match alert incoming. What an absolute amazing match between two of the greatest wrestlers alive or even all time, even if I’m not the biggest fan of Omega. The atmosphere was surreal, the crowd were red hot for this one and simply great wrestling from top to bottom. It’s a back and forth between two studs, every minute of it felt like exciting and tense and the time limit draw is a great way to tell a story in the next months or longer. Probably the best tv match of all time.” -Christian Gascoigne
“This match was a revelatory experience for me seeing the death of Daniel Bryan and the rebirth of Bryan Danielson in real time over a 30-minute period. This was just the beginning of Bryan’s incredible AEW run, and what a beginning it was.” -Paul Wedding
“Bryan Danielson returning to form. A dream match through and through that delivered big” -Rene Martinez
“Two of the top five wrestlers in the world put on a clinic where they really didn’t do anything spectacular, but they still have a five-star match. When they meet on PPV for the first time, Meltzer might break his scale again.” -Tyler Forness
“The two wrestlers who have the same name collide again after over a decade. One of the best parts of this match was just seeing how these two have developed over that time period. And of course it more than delivered. In a year plus of clap crowds, empty arenas and dead silence during matches, hearing the crowd go into an absolute frenzy before the two even locked up will forever be a reminder that when wrestling is with fans, it is unmatched.” -BlastoSTG
“Simply put: one of the finest television matches of all time and one that matched a level of hype that it could have drowned under. Surprise, surprise, Omega and Danielson bring the goods.
What a waste of 10 years in the fed.” -Mark
“The American Dragon is back, baby! Any worry that I had about Bryan Danielson having lost a step was gone when the match started. A 30-minute draw that flew by and one of the best TV matches in pro wrestling history. All that can be gathered from this match is that I want to see more of both men wrestling, and we will surely get it in 2022 and I can’t wait.” -Abraham Delgado
“Dream match. In the backdrop of the Arthur Ashe stadium. The atmosphere was positively electric, and felt like the biggest match in AEW history, just by virtue of atmosphere. The feeling of watching this match as it commenced was the sheer *impossibility* of it. If I had discussed this match as a possibility with friends two years ago, I might have been accused of being a mark. But the match was real. It happened. On live television.
And even as the match went to a time-limit draw, after 30 minutes, it was unmistakable that the fans had only received a taste. The amuse-bouche of what Kenny Omega and Bryan Danielson have to offer, and we’ve yet to see as fans. We know that Kenny is capable of putting on matches that are considered the best of all time, bar none. But this match was the first real example that we hadn’t even scratched the surface of what the American Dragon’s toolbox contains from what we saw during his run as WWE’s Daniel Bryan.
This match was so much larger than life, it simply couldn’t be contained by a single episode of Dynamite, or a 30-minute time limit. The result was for amazing as this experience was, it seemed more the trailer of matches to come than a match itself.” -Reuel Castillo
“In February 2021, I spoke about Bryan Danielson on a podcast about the greatest wrestlers ever (you can hear the audio on PWTorch’s Prowres Paradise). I noted that I had soured on Danielson’s entire career, becoming actively turned off by him when he chose to re-sign with WWE when he had the opportunity to jump ship. I was always the low man on his WWE run. The lauded matches against Triple H, John Cena, and Roman Reigns never clicked with me. Those matches were so hollow to me. I knew he was capable of so much more. I’m so thankful that Danielson bounced and that we have matches like the Kenny Omega match to remind of us how great he can actually be. This was art. This was a dream match that delivered on its expectations. This is how Bryan Danielson should be remembered.” -Case Lowe
“I watched this match the morning after in our hospital room about 24 hours prior to our first child being born. This was the re-introduction of The American Dragon Bryan Danielson to the world. Daniel Bryan had been laid to rest. Kenny didn’t take it easy on him either. An incredible professional wrestling display. If All Out launched AEW to the next level, this match laid the foundation of what we have seen since. ” -Steve Case
“Two of the best in the world wrestling for 30 minutes.” -J.D. Oliva
“When Bryan Danielson made his AEW debut, I wanted to see him wrestle Kenny Omega so bad. Both of these men are two of my favorite wrestlers ever. I know they’ve wrestled in the past, but now both men are at their peaks. AEW wasted little time and gave me and the rest of the wrestling world the match we all wanted to see. Danielson and Omega did not disappoint. This was a 30-minute classic on one of the biggest AEW shows of the year.” -Jeremy Donovan
“The American Dragon is back. There were a lot of dream matches to finally happen this year, but Danielson vs. Omega was probably at the top of my list and to see it happen broadcasting out of Arthur Ashe Arena had the match have a lot to live up to. It succeeded in living up to the hype. For 30 minutes Kenny and Bryan had the crowd eating out of the palm of their hand and when the rare draw occurred everyone began to await more. Some 6 months later and we are still waiting for more. Hopefully in 2022 we can get part 2 of this all time classic.” -Kentucky210
“Not only did this match feel like the cutting edge of what pro wrestling can be, it also did something nearly impossible; it lived up to the hype of what hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of fans around the world had hoped it would be. It was a testament to both men’s athletic ability, their cardio, and their ability to tell an engaging story that kept fans hooked for the entire length of the match. Perhaps most importantly, it also left those same fans clamoring to see a rematch.” -Liam Renner
“The pinnacle of singles wrestling in AEW for 2021 for me. I loved how ruthlessly Omega targeted Bryan’s head and how Danielson sold it too. The final touch of them continuing to fight after the bell rung was brilliant too, they were so caught up in the adrenaline of combat they either didn’t notice or didn’t care about the fact the match had ended, they just wanted to keep going.” -Sam Brown
“I had the pleasure of being in attendance at Arthur Ashe Stadium to see Bryan Danielson make his in-ring debut with AEW against the AEW World Champion Kenny Omega. The atmosphere was already off the charts when these two made their entrances, and it just intensified as the match got underway. The action from start to finish was nothing short of spectacular, with the second half of the bout being particularly amazing. Kenny Omega once again lived up to his “Best Bout Machine” nickname, while Bryan Danielson showed the entire world that The American Dragon was back and ready to wrestle his ass off. The Snap Dragon Suplex on the ramp and the running V Trigger down the ramp still stick out in my mind to this very day. The only complaint I have about this match is that it ended in a draw (I would’ve loved it even more if it had a true finish), but still, this was simply an awesome match, and while the rest of the night featured some really good matches, this one alone made the two plus hour trip from Northeast Pennsylvania worth it.” -Sean Sedor
“Bryan Danielson’s wrestling debut in AEW, and he did it against the world champion that was Kenny Omega? HOOOOLLLY SHIT MY TITS WOULD NOT BE CALMED THIS ENTIRE MATCH! This match ruled folks, just pure and utterly ruled. Perhaps one of the most insane and amazing crowds I have ever felt protrude through my television screen.
This match was Bryan Danielson unchained, unleashed, untamed, and both in control of what he wanted to do and out of control of the clutches that prevented him from doing so. We didn’t get the YES MAN, we got the AMERICAN FUCKIN’ DRAGON and he breathed fire. Kenny Omega is one of the best in the world and his contributions and importance to this match should not be ignored, but this match makes the list because it signaled the dragon had been reawakened, and HELL YEAH IT IS GOOD!” -Jeri L. Evagood
“Incredible wrestling clinic” -Sidney L. Pullar
“How American pro wrestling should be done. Wonderfully paced and both performers left it all out in the ring. Just beautiful” -Joey O’Doherty
“This was a match I never thought I’d see. At least not in 2021. I assumed Bryan would re-sign with WWE as most stars his caliber do. Boy am I glad he didn’t. This was one of the few true dream matches left in pro wrestling. This was a battle of not just two of the best wrestlers of this era, but two of the best wrestlers in history.” -Jeuron Dove
“Wow. Two of the best wrestlers of the last decade going at it in a unique venue with a sell-out crowd, 30 of the fastest 30 minutes in wrestling history. Pure excellence.” -Joe Towner
“A dream match that has the crowd on its feet before they lock up. JR is giddy at the prospect of this match for a reason. Danielson and Omega’s facials are perfect. Danielson cannot wait for the American Dragon to be unleashed, Omega looks nervous as hell. We see quite possibly the greatest V-trigger ever as we see Danielson do the things that you can tell he has wanted to do for years. The American Dragon doesn’t need to be protected from himself. Does the match have exhibition tendencies to it? A bit yes but it’s still a fun ride making you want more when the 30 mins are up.” -Peter Edge
“This wasn’t just Danielson’s AEW arrival, it was a rebirth. He shed his WWE skin and emerged as the American Dragon again, slipping right back into full throttle, ‘you’re going to get your fucking head kicked in’ mode. Omega and Danielson, two of the world’s best, played a magnificent game of one-upmanship. Red chests. Head cracking against the entrance ramp. Each man digging deep into their arsenal. This was a showcase of Omega’s artistry and an undeniable reminder of Danielson’s greatness.” -Ryan Dilbert
“Bryan Danielson’s end of the year will go down as one of the best ever but it all had to start with his match against Kenny Omega. After leaving WWE to join AEW, “The American Dragon” was reawakened but had one shot to show that this side of Danielson was still there. In what can only be called one of the best TV matches of all time, Danielson went 30 minutes with the AEW World Champion Kenny Omega on AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam, accomplishing everything he set out to do in AEW in his very first match. A lot of the time, fans will say that matches that are long in length “fly by” when they are that great. This was one of those occasions and Danielson and Omega told the story of wanting to be the best and nothing more. It was as good as TV wrestling can be as it reminded the world how great Danielson is.” -Scott Edwards Jr.
“This was THE match in AEW of 2021. THE biggest match they could have done… and they gave it away on free TV…. and when it was done, we wanted nothing more than to see it again. That’s how you book a wrestling match!” -Doug Fowler (Skeach101)
“Was there live for this and the opening minutes felt like a fever dream. Cliche as it may sound, the experience of this match was electrifying and the 30 minutes felt like 8 in the moment. Legitimately incredible.” -Ibrahima Niang
“Honestly, from a pure wrestling perspective does it get better than this? Danielson vs. Omega was in-ring competition at its best, and it was perfectly booked to boot.” -Jeremy Thomas
“The second that the bell rang, the crowd stood and cheered for this match, You knew we were in for a classic. Both men worked at a slow and deliberate pace looking for an opening to take control. Danielson ends up targeting the arm of Omega to work his way to the LeBell Lock as well as neutralize some of Omega’s strength while Omega works the neck and head of Danielson, playing off his history of issues with both and making a perfect target for a V Trigger or One Winged Angel. The match picks up as we get deeper into it. Both men take bigger and bigger chances and go for bigger moves. Both are throwing their hardest shots at the other and trying to wear the other down but neither seems to give an inch . This match flies by as the 30 minute time limit is reached and we end in a draw. Neither man was able to hit their best shot so the question still hangs if that would have been enough. This was a modern classic and made me want to see more of these two in the ring together.” -Alex Kalil
“What made Bryan Danielson’s first match in AEW so remarkable wasn’t that he was wrestling Kenny Omega, or that it was taking place in a massive tennis stadium in front of 20,000 people. It was the fact that after ten years of wrestling as Daniel Bryan, he seamlessly reverted back to being “The American Dragon” Bryan Danielson as if he had never stopped. He wrestled with the intensity and viciousness of Bryan Danielson, he did his trademark AmDrag spots like “I Have ’Til Five” and the Cattle Mutilation, and he eschewed the trappings of his WWE persona like the Yes chants (even if the crowd refuses to let that one go themselves). It just seemed so easy for him, like he was putting on an old coat. Omega was excellent here too, wrestling a cleaner (no pun intended, I swear) style free from the shenanigans of his heel run. He knew the position him and Bryan were in, and together they put on an incredible match. It may have ended in a draw, but a more important statement had been made: The American Dragon was back.” -Andrew Rich
“A dream match realized. The big match with the big match feeling in front of AEW’s biggest crowd. 30 minutes of pro wrestling heaven, that could only be topped with a definitive winner. I have no doubts that the eventual rematch will find its way onto this list whenever it happens.” -Suit Williams
“The second Bryan Danielson match to appear on my list, this time he faces AEW World Champion Kenny Omega in a non-title match. This match continues what some would call the “Bryan Danielson dream match tour” and from the start the fans in the arena were absolutely electric and waiting in anticipation to see these two lock up for the very first time. This match had an amazing atmosphere, something that has often been lost throughout the pandemic wrestling era. A wrestling crowd that’s engaged in the in ring product definitely makes a difference. Bryan took it to Omega early on and Omega took all of Bryan’s offense and came back with his own. This match was very back and forth and it kept me on the edge of my seat as I sat on my chair watching it. I’ll always love pro wrestling I have since I was three years of age but sometimes you forget why you like it especially when something dumb happens on a TV show but I’m thankful for matches like these because they remind me exactly why I fell in love with pro wrestling in the first place. This match was one for the ages, perhaps the greatest wrestling match in AEW history so far and it may as well be the best TV wrestling match ever. It was a joy to watch from start to finish, even with the time limit draw as a finish that it had by the end of the 30 minutes I felt myself wanting more and wanting these two wrestle once again and that’s why this match appears on my list because it hooked me as a fan on all levels. It had everything that I like in a match and it was a great viewing experience from start to finish. Go out of your way to watch this match if you haven’t seen it yet. Some matches have to be seen to be believed and if you don’t believe in wrestling after the last few years you will once again after watching this match!” -Nathan Neumann
