“One of the most underrated aspects of Ring of Honor in recent years has been the company’s ability to string together longterm stories. Within the company, no story stretched longer than that of Matt Taven and Vincent, which dated back to 2016 when Taven brought his New England buddy into Ring of Honor in a reformed Kingdom.
The story from there saw many twists and turns, with Vincent becoming more deranged as Taven achieved singles success, and led to several matches that felt like they could be the blow-off to the feud, but ultimately just ended up being stepping stones.
They finally blew things off at Glory By Honor, a rare cage match in ROH that was as dramatic as it needed to be. Vincent picked up the win over Taven, which flew in the face of conventional thinking since Vincent was the heel, but it also felt fitting in a way. The story was launched by Vincent fading away from Taven as Taven became a singles star, and in the end Vincent won the feud by fully exacting his revenge, whether he was morally in the right or not.” -Jesse Collings

“I feel as though I’ve been beating the drum for Ricky Marvin’s brilliant second act about as long and as hard as anyone, and aside from the Keyra match, this might be his standout performance. Really, this whole weekend is a showcase for Marvin, who is both a specialist and an incredibly versatile performer. On night one, he wrestles Villano 3 Jr. and does a credible impression of Daniel Bryan’s mid aughts indie work, and then follows it up with a truly harrowing brawl.
I don’t even really know where to start with this match. It’s one of those matches that flows wonderfully and organically to the point where transitions are hard to spot. Large portions of it remind me of the fight scene from Bresson’s Lancelot du Lac, where two men just run in to one another over and over and get progressively dirtier and more tired. It has a visceral quality that is wholly unique.
This quality makes the moments that do feel like more standard pro wrestling stand out as noteworthy. The missed dive, which marks the first true change in the match, is something that seems obvious even as it happens but manages to feel “real”, as though Marvin really has no other choice but to try and dive, even when everyone in the world aside from him will know it will fail. Of course he will be hit by a weapon he introduced. He will be hoisted by his own petard. That’s irrelevant. It’s something he must do.
In some way, this is more of an experience than a match. Both Marvin and Terry are loud performers, grunting and panting and shuffling around in ways that almost force you to watch them at all times. Once he starts bleeding, Terry looks dead on his feet, going purely on instinct and that instinct is enough to still beat almost anyone. Marvin looks perturbed throughout, the pissed off look of someone whose head hurts in a way that is truly unhealthy. He moves as though he wants this to be over because if it continues he likely will be hurt in ways he can’t come back from. It’s two unstoppable forces bouncing off one another and falling into a cloud of dust and blood. It’s incredible.” -JR Goldberg

“As 2019 concluded, my long-tenured love affair with ROH had come to an end, in significant part due to the mishandling of their women’s division. As 2021 began I did not foresee myself ever watching again. It was the passion of Maria Kanellis-Bennett that lured me back and the excellent lineup of the ROH Women’s Championship tournament that kept me there. Rok-C and Miranda Alize meeting in the finals to crown a new women’s champion for the first time in two years was the culmination of a decade of promises unfulfilled. Two of the brightest young talents on the scene today putting on a show-stealing performance.” -Harley R. Pageot

“Anyone who knows me knows what this rivalry means to me. Back in early 2017 I came across their WK 10 match as one of my earliest exposures to New Japan Pro wrestling and something just clicked. They immediately became my favourite wrestlers and rejuvenated my love for pro wrestling. So when I found out that they are going to fight once again after two years I was already jumping in excitement. Absence makes the heart grow fonder has never been truer for me. As for the match itself, it was all about establishing Okada. From him doing the Rainmaker pose during a match for the first time in nearly 2 years to them using the time limit draw from their previous G1 encounters as a storytelling plot so well to the (obviously) spectacular finishing stretch that is synonymous to this legendary rivalry, it was a perfect emotional rollercoaster for me. A wonderful bout.” -Ashutosh Dubey

“AEW’s tag matches are one of my favorite parts of their shows, and because the wrestlers had the freedom to do whatever they want anywhere in the arena this match had the potential to be their best this year and I believe that it didn’t disappoint. The amazing nonstop action makes this the ultimate spotfest of the year. What makes this match even more special is the fact that usually these matches don’t have interesting storytelling or character work, which they make up for with Jungle Boy’s character progression right at the end of the match after he previously refused to hit the conchairto.” -Saud Al-Rasheedi

“The best deathmatch of the year came from GCW. What a great tournament and even greater final between the babyface and the evil villain named Atticus Cogar. Man Cogar is great, so young but you absolutely have to hate him as the heel. This match rocked with all the drama, big nearfalls and blood all over the place. Cogar is the future, Colon the present. “The build, the previews, the tension. Everything was done to perfection. The show happening in the outdoor stadium was an amazing choice and made it stand out, because the sun was going down and when the main event started, it was happening under night skies.
And match itself? It was a perfect puro main event singles title match. With two titans, one of the past and other of the present. They clashed and fought until the perfect crescendo.
The ending was cathartic. Perfectly executed match and perfectly executed story of an invader taking on all comers until the Ace put him down. You cannot ask for more from any match.” -Velkej Bracha

“Those who watch AEW know both these men. They know both are good, but I highly doubt they know just HOW good these are. In the middle of a small but very very very hot room and in front of a masked up crowd Garcia and Yuta went to war for a title that is quickly building prestige in the IWTV belt. When watching this match live there was that moment of realization that these 2 were going an hour followed by disbelief. Yuta was 24 at the time, Garcia was 22, you’d be hard pressed to find many wrestlers at all that could do an hour in the building they were in, much less two wrestlers with a combined age less than 50. If you love technical wrestling this match is easily in your top 10 and if you haven’t seen it, block out an hour and go watch it.” -Kentucky210

“I thought this was excellent. The rating on cagematch raised a few eyebrows, but I’m in no way disappointed with the outcome. Whether it was Higuchi pairing off with MAO or Eruption’s incredible teamwork, this was purely quality. MAO sold for Higuchi’s back based attacks really well, bumping around while using his charisma to shine as an underdog. Sakaguchi was the right partner to compliment Higuchi’s work too. Even outside of the wrestling itself, Sakaguchi made Higuchi step on the gas even more with a few words and a slap. And that he did – just when the match seemed to be peaking, Takeshita and Higuchi match up and ramp up the intensity ever so more with an outstanding, bombastic closing stretch that saw Higuchi pick up the win after plenty of hard suplexes and throws.” -MC

When Shun Skywalker was rising up the ranks in Dragongate, he spent an entire year working in multi-man tags on the undercard. Every match had the same general formula. The “glue guys” would do their spots and carry the charge, paving the way for Skywalker to, at some point in the match, hit a giant springboard moonsault from the top rope to the floor. It was a sign that Skywalker was flashy, but not polished. Kaito Ishida, who debuted a year before Skywalker, but took much longer to find his footing in the DG pecking order, was adequately dubbed “just a kick boy”, because kicks were largely all he brought to the table during the first few years of his career. This match was the culmination of years of simplicity. Ishida worked Skywalker’s leg to death so Skywalker couldn’t do big moves. Skywalker, an established more-guts-than-brains guy, fought through the pain for as long as he could. Not enough people watched this match when it first aired, and that’s a damn shame given that it’s held up as one of the best matches of the entire year.” -Case Lowe

“The story of TJPW is very similar to the story of Maki Itoh; easily dismissed at the most superficial levels, but surprisingly complex depending on how much you want to get invested. Itoh’s story — which began with a lopsided, humiliating defeat at the hands of Miyu Yamashita — is still a work in progress, but it gains more clarity as it unfolds. The storytelling and character depth, with Itoh’s unflinching ambition running into the unyielding brick wall of reality that is the dominant champion Yamashita, further heightens a very good, exciting match.” -TDE

“Matt Cardona’s GCW World Title win at Homecoming Night One was the title change I certainly didn’t see coming. It also set the stage for Cardona’s amazing character in GCW, which is some of his most inspired work in a long time. GCW isn’t even my thing, but I can’t deny this match was one of the highlights of the year.” -Jeremy Thomas
“There weren’t many matches that were as plain fun as this. Cardona does so well as the guy who probably shouldn’t have gotten himself involved in a deathmatch. He is an outsider interloping in a place he does not belong, while Nick Gage is Nick Gage: avatar of the counterculture wrestling audience. The match is equal parts brutal, hilarious, and smart, giving Cardona’s post-WWE career real direction.” -Brian Moore

“This was, by far, my match of the year. Not only in the Deathmatch category, but in general. This a match that has to be seen, one of those that will be remembered years from not. Not only because it was a fantastic match, but also because it is a match that cannot be replicated. Ueki delivered big in his first Korakuen main event against the wrestler that had the best reign of 2020-21. In a moment where there was some debate around the use of Lighttubes and the future of this genre without them, Ueki and Toru proved (in the most brutal way) that there is still room creativity in ultraviolence. The amount of unprotected headbutts and spots with cinder blocks was ridiculus. A match that cannot be seen with indifference, a real life horror movie. An instant classic and the real MOTY in 2021.” -AlexGimenezBCN
“Words cannot describe the level of violence that was displayed on this match. One of the most brutal encounters of the year, Toru Sugiura’s run as champion was astounding. The passion and sacrifice of these two wrestlers cannot be replicated.” -Gin Malkavar

“Yuki Ueno has been gaining more and more recognition as an incredible talent. But match was very much about Yusuke Okada showing off what he can do after leaving All Japan. Okada did not disappoint. This was a great sprint between two guys that could carry DDT for many years into the future. Sadly, despite Okada’s very legitimate reasons for wanting to leave Tajiri’s reign of terror in All Japan, DDT has not capitalized on him since this match. Hopefully now that he has joined the latest version of Burning, Okada will have a big 2022 and show off what many thought he could do soon after his debut as a wrestler.” -Gerard Di Trolio

“Right up until the entrances at Slammiversary I remained unconvinced that Sami Callihan was either a) a convincing babyface or b) the right man to be headlining the first show back with fans. As soon as his music hit though, it was clear that the crowd were very into it and he more than proved he belonged in that spot.
Callihan rolled back the years here, producing his best performance since his much-lauded Apuestas match with Pentagon Jr back at Slammiversary in 2018.
The star of the show, however, was undoubtedly Omega. Branded ‘King of the Deathmatch’ by the inimitable Don Callis on commentary, he was absolutely superb here. He took bumps that he absolutely didn’t need to take, like a Tombstone on a barbed-wire chair, and worked ridiculously hard to make Callihan look as good as possible. Given that the result of the match felt like a foregone conclusion, the fact I popped for the nearfall after Callihan’s Package Piledriver is a testament to the drama they’d built.
One of the few matches in the year where I won’t moan about interference, this was the best match in Impact in 2021.” -Andrew Sinclair
