The B Block of G1 Climax 31 enters it’s penultimate night of block competition with just three wrestlers alive, leaving behind six competitors to battle for pride. The three wrestlers who are still alive, Kazuchika Okada, Jeff Cobb, and EVIL, will finally meet each other in the ring over their last two nights. In the main event, Kazuchika Okada will enter night sixteen undefeated and as an overwhelming favorite as he faces Tama Tonga.
Jeff Cobb will also enter his second-to-last block match at 7-0 but with a more formidable opponent across the ring as he finally gets his match with EVIL. EVIL is in a must-win situation, as he needs to stay within two points of the lead and he has already lost to Kazuchika Okada. Even if EVIL wins against Cobb, if Kazuchika Okada wins in the main event, the best he can hope for is a complicated three-way tie between himself, Cobb, and Okada. But let’s not go too deep into the tiebreakers. That three-way tie is scary and will require multiple levels of tiebreakers to dissect. I’ll get into that before the B-Block final if I need to.
Down the card, Hiroshi Tanahashi will face YOSHI-HASHI as he attempts to win two in a row to finish his tournament with double digit points. In the second block match of the night, SANADA and Hirooki Goto will play for pride, and the block opening match will feature Taichi and Chase Owens, both trying to get back into the win column, Taichi after a 5 match losing streak.
The top two matches on this card will set the tone for the block’s final night next Wednesday. NJPW fans around the world are rooting for Jeff Cobb, regardless of his status on the heel-face axis, as a win over EVIL here would very likely lead to the first ever undefeated vs. undefeated match-up on a block’s final night when he meets Kazuchika Okada in Nippon Budokan.
In daily preview posts, I am dissecting each tournament matchup, including 2021 and recent singles performance, individual head-to-head histories, and miscellaneous applicable research. Round robin tournaments are great equalizers for data: each wrestler competes in the same schedule throughout the tournament by facing each other wrestler once. So, as the tournament goes on and data points become more relevant, I’ll be including some advanced metrics and probabilities for each card as well. I’ll also help to dissect the complicated tiebreakers and other tournament nuances as they come up.
