G1 Climax 31’s A Block heads back to the origin of the tournament as they invade EDION Arena Osaka for their seventh night of tournament action. Positively streaking Kota Ibushi will take on negatively streaking Great-O-Khan in a main event that could tie Great-O-Khan for the block lead. The semi-main event will feature IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, Shingo Takagi facing off with Tanga Loa in a match where Takagi is sure to be the heavy favorite. The third tournament match down the card will feature two wrestlers on the brink of elimination as Toru Yano and Yujiro Takahashi face off, and tournament action will begin with Zack Sabre Jr looking to extend his block-lead against KENTA.

In what is sure the most anticipated special singles match of the tournament (replacing Tetsuya Naito’s scheduled tournament matches), Hiromu Takahashi will face Tomohiro Ishii in a rematch of their New Japan Cup 2020 classic. The opener of the night will feature Ryohei Oiwa and Kosei Fujita participating in their first tag team match against El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru.

In daily preview posts, I am dissecting each tournament matchup, including 2021 and recent singles performance, individual head-to-head histories, and miscellaneous applicable research. Round robin tournaments are great equalizers for data: each wrestler competes in the same schedule throughout the tournament by facing each other wrestler once. So, as the tournament goes on and data points become more relevant, I’ll be including some advanced metrics and probabilities for each card as well. I’ll also help to dissect the complicated tiebreakers and other tournament nuances as they come up.
