This is part two of my deep-dive into historical statistics and individual performances of this year’s G1 Climax competitors. The introduction portion is mostly redundant to my A Block preview. If you already read that article, scroll past the “About the G1 Climax” section.

It is G1 Climax season, and it feels like it’s been forgotten that the G1 Climax is, without a doubt, the preeminent professional wrestling tournament on the planet. This year, twenty competitors will descend upon New Japan Pro Wrestling to prove that they are the best in-ring professional wrestler on the planet as they vie for an opportunity for the most meaningful title in professional wrestling: the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

In this post I will provide a snapshot of the G1 Climax history of each competitor in the B Block of this year’s tournament. I’ll highlight their all-time head-to-head performance against other wrestlers in their block and their historical G1 Climax performance including records, match times, and their individual histories throughout the tournament.

This isn’t the last you’ll hear from me for this year’s G1. In daily preview posts, I’ll dissect each tournament matchup, including 2021 and recent singles performance, individual head-to-head histories, and miscellaneous applicable research. Round robin tournaments are great equalizers for data: each wrestler competes in the same schedule throughout the tournament by facing each other wrestler once. So, as the tournament goes on and data points become more relevant, I’ll be including some advanced metrics and probabilities for each card as well. I’ll also help to dissect the complicated tiebreakers and other tournament nuances as they come up. You can find my Statistics, Individual Histories and Notes for the A Block Here.

Of course, you can find interactive tables for NJPW’s 2021, detailed results and statistics of all 1551 G1 Climax matches to date, and This Year’s Tournament at SportOfProWrestling.com, and you can let me know what you find when you drill down by dropping me a line on Twitter @TheChrisSamsa.

About The G1 Climax

The G1 Climax is an annual round robin style tournament held by New Japan Pro Wrestling. This year’s tournament will run from September 18th to October 21st. Twenty wrestlers are split into two equal blocks, the A Block and the B Block. Every wrestler will face every other wrestler in their block for a total of nine tournament matches. Block matches are contested with a 30-minute time limit with points awarded based on the following:

  • 2 points for a win
  • 1 point for a time limit draw
  • 0 points for a loss or a No Contest (double disqualification or double count out are the most common no contests)

After all of the block matches are completed, the winner of each block is the wrestler who has the most points. If two or more wrestlers are tied, the block winner is determined by their head-to-head tiebreaker. For example, if Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada both end the tournament with 12 points, but Kazuchika Okada defeated Tanahashi in their match, Kazuchika Okada is the block winner. The winner of each block will meet in the G1 Climax Final match on October 21st. The G1 Final must have a winner, therefore there is no time limit imposed on the final match which is typically one of the most anticipated pro wrestling matches of the year.

Since 2012, the winner of the final match has been awarded a contract for a shot at the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom, New Japan Pro Wrestling’s annual Tokyo Dome card on January 4th. With three upcoming events carrying the “Wrestle Kingdom” branding, it is uncertain when the tournament winner will take their title shot, presumably for the newly established IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

There are a few added wrinkles to pay attention to as the tournament goes on. Traditionally, when a wrestler defeats the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, they earn themselves a championship match before Wrestle Kingdom. Shingo Takagi enters this year’s tournament as the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion and the G1 Climax has only been won twice by the wrestler holding the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, so we can expect to see the champion lose a couple of times, but we can also hope that they will be meaningful title challengers as the year goes forward.

In addition to the top title holder attempting to avenge their tournament losses, the G1 Climax winner also traditionally defends their Wrestle Kingdom title shot against wrestlers that defeated him during the tournament. Last year was the first time that the Wrestle Kingdom title shot actually changed hands when Jay White defeated Kota Ibushi at Power Struggle to weasel his way back into the Wrestle Kingdom title picture.

G1 Climax 31 B Block

This year’s G1 Climax B block features six G1 climax championships and eleven G1 finals appearances. Of course, half of both of those categories can be attributed to Hiroshi Tanahashi, but that’s beside the point. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto, Kazuchika Okada and SANADA have all perennially appeared near the top of their blocks in their combined fifty G1 climax tournaments. On paper, this year’s B Block looks to be pretty wide open. Justifications can be made for at least half of the block to be the favorite to move on to the final.

  • Every year, it seems the collective NJPW fanbase says that Kazuchika Okada is due for another G1 Climax win, and this year is no different. Okada has averaged the best performance in the G1 over the last 10 years, but he has missed the finals six years straight now. This year marks the first time that Kazuchika Okada has participated in consecutive G1 Climax tournaments without the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Maybe that is just the motivation he needs to get himself back into the title picture via an elusive G1 Climax victory.
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi can’t ever be ruled out of a G1 Climax. His experience speaks for itself: six finals appearances, three tournament victories and the most G1 Climax matches and victories all-time. Entering as the IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion, Tanahashi has to be in the conversation as a favorite to win this year’s B Block.
  • SANADA finally crossed the bridge into the G1 Climax Finals in last year’s tournament. Since 2014, Shinsuke Nakamura, Kenny Omega, and Kota Ibushi have all appeared in back-to-back G1 Climax Finals.
  • EVIL and his new “House of Torture” sub-unit of Bullet Club can’t be discounted. He matched his career high with 12 points in last year’s tournament and it could be argued that he, and his tactics, are stronger and more seasoned now.
  • Jeff Cobb might seem like a dark horse, but he’s been a force to be reckoned with since joining The United Empire. His recent singles victory over Kazuchika Okada has set him up with the confidence he needs to enter G1 season ready to make his mark on the NJPW singles heavyweight division.
  • Hirooki Goto would like you to believe that the G in G1 stands for Goto. The 2008 winner and 2016 finalist consistently out-performs his projections each year. Now in his 14th consecutive G1, Goto may be primed for one more run towards the finals.
  • The block is rounded out with tag team specialists, Taichi, Tama Tonga, and YOSHI-HASHI and the G1 Climax debut of Chase Owens.
