New Japan Pro Wrestling returns to the MetLife Dome in Saitama for the first time in over seven years with a doubleheader of Wrestle Grand Slam events this weekend. Both nights will feature five solid matches, with each night headlined by a singles championships match. Night one will feature the first IWGP United States Heavyweight championship match on Japanese soil in well over 500 days when Hiroshi Tanahashi defends his newly acquired championship against the returning Kota Ibushi. The semi-main event will feature another grudge match between Kazuchika Okada and Jeff Cobb in their third career singles match. The Provisional KOPW 2021 will be on the line in a No DQ, I Quit match between Chase Owens and Toru Yano. The first singles match of the evening will have SHO facing off against longtime tag-team partner, YOH as they establish themselves as rivals.
The show is sure to be a swift but compelling five-match card with the added bonus of a Stardom match to kick things off.
Main Event
IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship
Hiroshi Tanahashi (c) vs. Kota Ibushi
The IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship will be defended in Japan for the first time in 574 days as Kota Ibushi, returning from illness for his first match in just over two months, faces off against newly crowned champion, Hiroshi Tanahashi. Tanahashi defeated Lance Archer for the red belt at NJPW’s Resurgence event in Los Angeles just three weeks ago. Upon The Ace’s arrival back in Japan he suggested that Kota Ibushi be his first challenger for the belt. Ibushi and Tanahashi teamed together as The Golden Aces last year, and while Ibushi shined in those situations, Tanahashi may have the momentum coming into this match-up.
Ibushi has been sidelined with illness since July 2nd, and Tanahashi stepped in for the Golden Star on July 25th when Ibushi needed to miss his scheduled IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match. These two have had classic matches in the past, most notably their 2018 G1 Climax Final, but it remains to be seen whether Kota Ibushi has fully recovered from his illness and just how hard Hiroshi Tanahashi will fight for the Red leathered IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship.

Match Four
Special Singles Match
Kazuchika Okada vs. Jeff Cobb
The semi main event will feature a grudge match between Kazuchika Okada and The United Empire’s dominant enforcer, Jeff Cobb. Okada defeated Cobb at July’s Wrestle Grand Slam event in the Tokyo Dome, but it was only with a sit-down pinfall, certainly not the definitive victory we’re used to seeing from Okada. Everyone had thought that Cobb had gone home, but he showed up at the next Summer Struggle event at Korakuen Hall and laid out Okada, staking his claim at a third match with Okada in under a year.
Cobb has been dominant in tag matches this year, but he has yet to hit his stride in singles matches and he is looking gain some momentum with a big victory over Kazuchika Okada here.
Recent History – 2021 Singles
- Despite Jeff Cobb’s success and dominance in tag matches, he has struggled in singles action in Japan since joining The United Empire. He is currently riding a three-match losing streak, and he has lost five of his last six singles matches in Japan.
- Cobb and Okada have been two of the most challenging wrestlers to defeat in singles matches this year. Okada’s +11:36 Win-Loss Differential is third-best in NJPW. Cobb’s +10:45 is good for sixth-best.
Recent History – Last 365 Days Singles
- Kazuchika Okada’s 13 singles victories in the last 365 days are sixth-most in NJPW during that period.
- Jeff Cobb’s 10 singles losses in the last 365 days are the second most in NJPW when recently graduated Young Lions are removed from the statistics. Only Yujiro Takahashi (12) has more losses in this timeframe.
Recent History – 2021 Individual Overall
- Jeff Cobb leads NJPW in 2021-win 45 winning falls.
- Jeff Cobb’s +39 Fall Differential is the best in NJPW in 2021. He leads Shingo Takagi by one fall, while the next highest after the top two sits at +23.
- Cobb’s .838 Overall Win Percentage is the highest in NJPW this year. The United Empire has dominated this year. Cobb is joined by Great-O-Khan and Will Ospreay in the top 3 in 2021 Overall Win %.
Head To Head History

- Kazuchika Okada defeated Jeff Cobb with the same sit-down pinfall in both of their singles meetings.
- Okada’s 11 minute and 3 second victory over Jeff Cobb in 2020’s G1 Climax tournament was his fastest victory of the tournament, and it stands as Okada’s eighth-fastest G1 Climax victory ever.
History in MetLife Dome
- Kazuchika Okada has wrestled once in the MetLife (Seibu) Dome. The 2014 G1 Climax Finals occurred in this building and Kazuchika Okada defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to win the tournament in 23 minutes and 18 seconds.
Match Three
Provisional KOPW 2021 – No DQ, I Quit Match
Chase Owens (c) vs. Toru Yano
The Provisional KOPW 2021 will be on the line when Chase Owens and Toru Yano face off in a No DQ, I Quit match. Chase Owens won the Provisional KOPW 2021 from Toru Yano in a New Japan Rambo at the Tokyo Dome on July 25th and Owens and Yano have continued their antics since. Yano is typically reserved in his violence, but Owens is bringing out the old, more hardcore side of Yano these days. Without the benefit of disqualification, Owens is clearly at a disadvantage here, as Yano typically has the upper hand in situations where he can be blatant with his less than legal strategies.
Recent History – 2021 Singles
- Chase Owens’ negative 11 minute and 2 second Win-Loss Differential is the worst in NJPW this year.
- Toru Yano’s 6-1 singles record in 2021 is third-best in NJPW this year.
Recent History – Last 365 Days Singles
Recent History – 2021 Individual Overall
- Toru Yano’s 50 overall wins are seventh-most in NJPW this year.

Match Two
Special Singles Match
SHO vs. YOH
It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for, we finally see SHO and YOH, one of the longest-standing NJPW tag teams, split up and battle each other. YOH returned from injury and immediately reunited with his tag team partner, SHO. They went on to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships quickly after YOH’s return, but that was their ceiling, again. After losing the titles, SHO and YOH went winless through the Super Junior Tag League and YOH took all of the losing falls, causing SHO to boil over and give up on his long-time tag team partner. With their team now finished, it is time for one of these wrestlers to establish dominance as a singles wrestler and start their path towards the singles IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.
Recent History – 2021 Singles
- SHO’s 35 minute and 38 second loss to Hiromu Takahashi at The New Beginning in Hiroshima was the longest IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship Match of all time. It was the 8th longest match in NJPW this year.
