“Shiozaki vs. Sugiura left me feeling awestruck, spellbound, complicit. It’s a storm of brutality that never eases up. The visceral epic is the story of two men willing to delve into the depths of sadism to achieve victory. Sugiura wrecks Shiozaki’s arm with not a drop of mercy in his heart. The champion, wearing the scars of his title reign, responds by chopping Sugiura’s chest until it bleeds, until it stops resembling human flesh. This was the best and most compelling NOAH main event in a year full of them, the apex of a banner year for Shiozaki.” -Ryan Dilbert
“Just an incredible match. I just couldn’t think of a match I enjoyed more this year, even though I was more invested in the Nakajima title defense the month before. It felt pretty obvious this was just a filler defense for Shiozaki but credit to both guys I was enthralled the entire time and bit on the near falls anyway. One of the few Covid era matches to feel like an epic title match. It was really a war of attrition to see who would give up first, hard hitting strike exchanges followed by both guys collapsing from exhaustion but still finding a way back to their feet.” -TJ Folk
“If you had told me at the beginning of 2020 that Go Shiozaki would be at the top of my MOTY ballot, I would have asked you if you’re out of your mind. Shiozaki had maybe the best championship reign in all of Japan throughout 2020 with special matches like the Fujita one or classics like the Nakajima match and this one. And don’t forget his awesome N-1 victory, too. Sugiura told Go before the match that he isn’t allowed to say that he’s NOAH, he can only make that claim when he’s beaten him. Great stuff! It was all about who’s going to stand last while both men hit each other with multiple chops, lariats and much more. Go’s right arm is his key to victory, and Sugiura did not make enough damage to weaken Go’s weapon and felt down to the Gowan Lariat at the very end. It was an exciting bout with two men giving their lives for Pro Wrestling NOAH. Simply amazing fight.” -Christian Gascoigne
“Some professional wrestling matches reach a higher state of art. They’re meaningful beyond the simple sphere of the moment, and can’t be contained in themselves. They require a higher understanding of the people involved and of the place in which it is taking place. I am no specialist in NOAH, neither am I in the carrers of Shiozaki or Sugiura. However, in the span of less than an hour this match told me everything I needed to know. I saw a man in the form of Shiozaki trying to be the best he could be after feeling like a flop for many years. I also saw Sugiura, the man with the highest combined amount of days as GHC champion, giving his all in what might as well be the final years of his carreer. I saw both men fight for the right of using a very simple sentence that means everything in the world of professional wrestling: I am NOAH. They fought over the right of using the moniker built over the shoulder of, arguably, the greatest wrestler of all time: Mitsuharu Misawa. It was a transcedent experience that told a tale of hope and honor based on the foundations of what wrestling should be.” -Evandro Furtado
“An unbelievably hard hitting match that despite it’s marathon length was justified by weaving in and out the grande scheme story of Sugiura having ended Go’s very first world title reign 11 years prior on the same date. The spiritual symbolism arguably reached a crescendo with Sugiura working Go into a Boston Crab, the man who professed that “I am NOAH” throughout the year on the verge of being relegated back to young boy status by the same man who took away his spot as Ace of the company originally. It goes without saying that they brought a level of physicality nearly unequaled in the year of wrestling, but it’s the in between that goes unnoticed by many that put this over WALTER/Ilja, a match with similar levels of physicality in a more concise package for MOTY.” -Dylan Fox
“Shiozaki’s story as wrestler of the year is one that would strike a cord with what many people have experienced in 2020. Through repeated waves of adversity he is damaged, yet endures and pushes through to finally become the ace that his company has long wanted him to be. This match represented his year in a microcosm. Held together by string and staples throughout his championship reign, he finishes his year having to go through unprecedented, hard hitting, abuse to prove he really is NOAH. Challenging him is a man who has been a symbol of the company throughout its twenty year existence and wants to prove the exact same thing. This is a violent and epic journey of chops, clotheslines and big moves. Many criticise the length of matches in this era, but when it’s as good as this, a high stakes war of attrition can’t be beaten. I was invested in every moment and each key spot felt important and well earned. Now in his fifties and after years of memorable matches, Sugiura manages to defy the passing of time and achieve the magnum opus his career. Shiozaki has fought through wrestling’s most difficult and painful year to give us a performance that would stand against the best of any other. It is remarkable.” -Jack Groom
“Man oh man this match. By the end of the year Go Shiozaki was held together by duct tape, baling wire, chewing gum and heart. His arm and body were frayed all year, but Go is a fighting champ, and there will be a day when his body eventually gives out, but it wasn’t this night vs. Noah stalwart Takashi Sugiura. Takashi did the playbook vs. Go – target the right arm and shoulder, take away the lariat, and go from there. And for fifty or so minutes, it worked. These two men just beat the hell out of each other – the spot where Takashi was standing over Go punching him into oblivion in the corner will stay seared in my brain for years. But Go, ever the fighter, dug down deep and pulled out one last lariat for the well deserved win. This match is not only my match of the year, it is easily one of the best matches I’ve ever seen.” -George Atsaves
“This match exemplified everything that I personally enjoy about professional wrestling and is a direct reflection of why NOAH was my favorite promotion of the year. Shiozaki and Sugiura provided hard hitting and no-nonsense professional wrestling for almost an hour. The two presented the match like a legitimate competition, but not at the expense of not telling a great professional wrestling story. Some of the spots in this match were brutal to the extent of thinking there was no way that either of them was going to get up, but low and behold they did. Entertaining from bell to bell and felt like an early 2000s NOAH main event that had time traveled to 2020.” -Nick Davidson
“Just two great wrestlers having a big match. Time flew by while Sugiura and Shiozaki did their best trying to demolish each other. Sugiura worked the arm of the champion, leaving him against the ropes. However, Go pushed back, looking for different ways to attack. The final minutes were perfect, with Go selling the pain of his arm and fighting against it. I don’t think you could ask for more, this was everything pro-wrestling is suposed to be. In my opinion, Go was the best wrestler of 2020. Every match for the GHC Heavyweight Championship felt bigger with his performances, his run with the belt has been awesome.” -Gin Malkavar
“I didn’t think anything could beat the brilliance of storytelling and physicality that NJJPW provided in 2020 but this did it. I had heard of the brutality of the match but that was only part of it. The English commentary I watched it with helped make the past ten years of NOAH seem important rather than a footnote to the first few years. And this match delivered on the hype the commentary provided. Shiozaki selling the arm was great. The chop and strike exchanges would have been gratuitous from a log of other wrestlers but these guys wove it into great bookends of the match. I don’t want to miss another GHC title match, even though I know it will be hard to get to this level, but watching this match makes me want to see NOAH try to do so.” -Dave Musgrave
“The two most brutal matches this year were this match and WALTER/Ilja Dragunov. I think this is only slightly below that particular match, but holy moly this was great. And brutal. And painful! But also incredible to watch. I’ve heard such great things about Go Shiozaki’s current run as GHC Champion, and this match makes me feel bad I haven’t paid close attention.” -Bryan Rose
“In the age of hushed clap-crowds this match stands out, because it isn’t farfetched to imagine the audience is simply aghast at the violence they’re seeing. A sequence where Sugiura traps Go in the corner and unloads with elbows to the head had me watching from between my fingers, quietly whispering to myself, “wrestling is fake, wrestling is fake.”
But it’s not just that. The story of Go Shiozaki’s tremendous GHC title reign has rested on two pillars – his “I AM NOAH” mantra and his tattered right arm, seemingly held together by chewing gum and twine. Takashi Sugiura possesses a history with the promotion relevant to the prior, and an acute ability to fuck up the latter.” -Jonathan Hernandez
“Two absolute warriors battling it out in a style that hearkened back to the good old days of NOAH, when Misawa and Kobashi reigned atop the card. Sugiura put on an age defying performance and Shiozaki delivered on everything he did despite being taped up so much he looked like he’d fall apart if you took it off. Not the first NOAH match of late 2020 that got me excited for their future again, but definitely the stronger of the two best matches from the promotion in the year.” -James Snelgrove
“An incredible match. The atmosphere was just fantastic. Shiozaki’s chops were insane. Story is simple but great. A Great hard Hitting match with a long story.” -Salih Arandı
“What a war! What a battle! 50 minutes plus of just two people going all at each other in a match that was a physical and brutal affair between two foes, two rivals. This is one of those matches that while it goes long, it doesn’t feel forever, it grasps you and doesn’t waste a single minute it gets to use. This was an incredible fight, an incredible affair, and I’m so glad I got unto the Noah watching train just in time to tune in and let it wash over me. What a match.” -Jeri L. Evans
“This match continued the story of Go Shiozaki’s career reaching its apex at the same moment his body started to fail. Just two weeks after the Nakajima match, Shiozaki battered his career rival in a 53-minute epic.” -Harley Duncan
“I don’t really care how long a match goes, just as long as I enjoy it. This match is the perfect example of that, because it went a shade over 50 minutes, but not once did I feel the length. You have Go Shiozaki, the valiant, banged-up champion, his arms taped like a mummy, defending his title against an unstoppable “Killing Machine” in Takashi Sugiura. Violence was to be expected, and boy howdy was this violent and stiff and nasty from beginning to end. This was a war of attrition, where guts had more sway than brains, where Sugiura pummeled Shiozaki with elbows that looked as real as can be, where I yelled “COME ON, GO!” as Shiozaki deadlifted Sugiura out of a guillotine choke into a Go Flasher. This match put a stamp on Shiozaki’s extraordinary 2020 and should be first on the list for anyone seeking to try out NOAH.” -Andrew Rich
“A war. Just two guys fighting hard and aggressively to be the better man, stripped back. Raw. Real. No bullshit. Perfect selling.” -Gareth Hodgson
“Fun hard-hitting bout. Fantastic match that continues to cement Shiozaki’s legacy in NOAH and continues his great title reign.” -Jason Oun
“So truth be told I don’t really expand my wrestling viewing outside of Japan other than New Japan Pro Wrestling but on December 7th and a few days after that I went on twitter and I read a handful of tweets saying that everyone needed to see this match and that it would be a late entry into any match of the year countdown poll. Then I saw how long the match was and I kind of cringed at the hour long run time. However that being said this match felt like a match that happened in 15 minutes it didn’t feel like it went an hour at all and if it did then that’s one hell of a way to spend of an hour of my time. This is the first match appearing on my top ten list with a “clap crowd” but the crowd even though they couldn’t audibly cheer and make noise to show their support they were into it for the entire hour. This match was as hard hitting as it gets as Go would give a little and then take a little and vice versa. Go would get the advantage early on but it was a very back and forth match. The match eventually went to the outside and Sugiura would take over working over the champion until Go would fight back some of the chops that Go threw at Takashi were some of the loudest that I’ve ever heard and at one point in the match Sugiura’s chest began to bleed from them. Sugiura would corner Shiozaki later in the match and hit him with some thunderous forearms to the face before Shiozaki would return to his feet and the two would stand in the middle of the ring trading blows. These two men absolutely beat the shit out of each other for almost an hour in a match that will go down as an instant classic and one that people will be talking about years from now. It was as strong style as they come and at the end of the match Go Shiozaki would blast Takashi Sugiura with one final lariat to score the pinfall to get the victory and retain the GHC Heavyweight Championship this match was absolutely outstanding and if you are reading this, go watch this match right now, you wont regret it!” -Nathan Neumann
“The stiff striking in this was some of the best work of the year and it hooked you in the opening few minutes. Don’t let the length put you off because this will have you pacing and roaring with every move.” -Sarah Flannery
“Chop, punch, grunt, attempt of beheading. This was a relentless, physical and brutal war that made me wince numerous times. 51 minutes that flew by thanks to the absolute intensity of these badasses who also managed to include some astonishing levels of storytelling. Beautiful.” -Ricardo Gallegos
“Two big boys hitting the crap out of each other nonstop for 50 minutes that felt like 30 minutes in a continuation of matches where Go is tortured. This match is so hard hitting that I was cringing at moments and going “ouch” way too many times. A long version of the Walter/Dragunov torture session. Still amazed that Go and Sugiura went this hard for that long.” -Abraham Delgado
“This match was similar to the WALTER vs. Ilja Dragunov match in that it prioritized heavy chops and strikes that echoed throughout the silent arena, but was somehow even better. The match went over 50 minutes, which sounds like a bad idea, but not when a match has this kind of raw, physical violence. Shiozaki, who has held the GHC Heavyweight Championship for the entire year, helped carry NOAH through a very difficult 2020 with consistently excellent performances in the main event. Sugiura has also been great, and at 50 years old he somehow managed to go 51 minutes, wrestling at a quick pace and taking an incredible beating, which was a truly remarkable achievement. This match isn’t for everyone due to its length, but it was a complete war between two great performers. This was very similar to a classic AJPW match from the 90s, the only difference being there was not a hot crowd to supplement the incredible action.” -Jesse Collings
“Shiozaki was arguably the hottest worker for the latter half of 2020, and this, for me, was the pick of his outstanding matches from that period. For so many years, Go lacked those little yet vital things to help move him from being a very good worker to a great one. He found them during 2020, and boy did he deliver.” -Mo Chatra
“Incredible, hard hitting match with an awesome story that capped off a great year for Shiozaki.” -Stephanie Chase
“If you’ve ever wondered what a man trying to chop down a tree with his bare hands sounds like, look no further that Shiozaki’s right arm and Sugiura’s chest. At 50 minutes this match should have been a slog, but the sheer brutality just makes the time fly by. With a crowd restricted to mere clapping, the sounds of meat-on-meat ring out like church bells in the temple of violence.” -Mike Gilbert
“Pro wrestling can be beautiful in its violence, and this match certainty embodied that sentiment. Shiozaki has had many great matches in 2020, but this one stands above the rest in my book. I do believe this is the longest match on my list, but its slower pace and steady build gave every moment enough time to breathe. The lengthy exchanges of strikes delivered a brutal edge, which tipped this match into the company of the very best of the year. Whilst Shiozaki’s incredible title reign continues into this year, so far this has been the greatest of a quite wonderful bunch of main event matches.” -Jamie Johnson
“50 Minutes of big beefy violence. It was Walter/Ilja on steriods. 2020 the Year of Shiozaki.” -Christopher Duarte
“Two NOAH stalwarts putting on a near perfect NOAH match.” -Ed Kody
“Go Shiozaki keeps showing again and again that this title reign has been the best in wrestling this year. These two went to war and after having his shoulder ripped apart for the millionth time, hit Sugiura with a lariat after 51 minutes. Incredible match.” -Tyler Forness
“If there ever was a match where I just wanted the live crowd in attendance to throw caution to the wind and scream their lungs out, this was it. It suffered from the usual NOAH trope of being a bit too long, but just when you start drifting off they pull you in again. A tremendous effort.” -Shane
