“I thought it was a perfect match for the kind of company OZ Academy is. If you weren’t a fan of EVIL last year, you probably won’t like this match. It was almost entirely heel interference. But I thought it was well done. Anou coming out to the ring in the all white gear only to be absolutely destroyed and bloodied by her boss and stablemates She put up as valiant a fight as she could but was no match, and honestly didn’t get much offense in at all. It was just one long beatdown with a great performance from Anou selling all the damage.” -TJ Folk

“These two guys put on a really great technical wrestling match. Lee Moriarty showed why he is one of the best wrestlers on the indie wrestling scene today during the Collective weekend. Him and Gresham stole the show with both men putting out such a great technical wrestling performance. Also want to shout out Lenny Leonard’s great commentary on this show.” -Filip Pejic

“Much like Naito vs. Okada, this match surpassed all logical thought upon my first viewing. Jungle had been cutting some of the most heartfelt and passionate promos of the year in the leadup to this match and the only thing I wanted here was for Jungle to pull it out. But on repeated viewings, there is true genius in this match. Mayu used establish Stardom spots for the sake of subverting your expectations here. For example, in big Stardom matches, it’s not uncommon for opponents to hold each other by the hair for a forearm exchange. When Jungle reached out to do that, Mayu caught her in a triangle. In a year where places like New Japan has stuck to formula to the detriment of storytelling, a spot like that sticks out as something wonderful.” -Chris O’Brien

“This is the match that made me “feel” most things in all of 2020. When I re-watched it, I actually did so 4 times in a row, because of how compelling it was & by how blown away I was. And on each viewing I came out with more little things that I was completely geeking over. This match was pure love. Pro-Wrestling at its most beautiful.” -Heikki Oinonen

“In my opinion this match flys under the radar. This was not merely just another match with limb work and great selling of that, but rather a demonstration that showed that Jun Akiyama is still capable of having a great and compelling big-time match while at the same time Konosuke Takeshita in my opinion once again proved that he is the best wrestler DDT has to offer. Akiyama grounding the young, agile and resilient ace of the company was the exact right story to tell at this moment in time and at the same time, it told the great story of Takeshita trying to fire back with everything he had and coming close to this act of despair actually succeeding. That Akiyama trampled out Takeshita’s fire in this match and the finish of it all made it even more special to me.” -STRIGGA

“ I may have been on a high from spending a summers day drinking cider with some mates on a rare non-lockdown weekend in England, but I came into this opening day of the G1 show really down about New Japan and the start of a month long tournament of there’s, but the ever consistent Ishii and Suzuki put on a great showing that was the perfect remedy for a lack of enthusiasm for the G1. Alas, I was tricked. The G1 rarely touched this level of quality again all month.” -Ed Mills

“It was a strange year in wrestling, as companies across the world were forced to re-examine how they presented their shows in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. For most companies, the answer was to put forth a neutered version of their product, suddenly disconnected from valuable fan interaction and lacking overall. But not Gatoh Move. Gatoh Move, already radically different than mainstream wrestling prior to 2020, re-invented themselves as a bi-weekly streaming show that actually managed to bring fans closer to the action than ever before, even if the fans were all watching on a screen. Fans, given even great levels of access to the shows, connected with it instantly and booker Emi Sakura rewarded them with intricate and complex storylines that were about adversity, growth, hardship and triumph instead of just who has which title. Nowhere does the brilliant 2020 of Gatoh Move shine through more than in the Emi Sakura/Yuna Mizumori match that was the climax of Mizumori’s story in ChocoPro, one in which she grew from a self-doubting and unsure wrestler into one of the stars of the entire promotion and one of the biggest stories of 2020. It is a story we can all in some way identify with, and its presentation, coupled with incredible in-ring (in-mat?) work, propelled it to a clear #1 on my list.” -Taylor Maimbourg

“Storytelling. The form of professional wrestling that made it so popular to begin with. Many times in present-day wrestling matches, it isn’t about the story as much as it is the moves and getting a big reaction from the crowd. Well, Roman Reigns and Jey Uso would beg to differ. In Reigns’ first defense of the Universal Championship, he faced off with his cousin Jey Uso following a story that saw Uso get his first title shot of his career and want to remain buddy-buddy with his cousin. There were signs that Reigns wasn’t thinking this way and when we finally got to the match, he showed that this buddy-buddy routine was not going to cut it. “The Head of the Table” made it clear that he loved his cousin but did not hold back. In what was a one-sided affair was also old school WWE writing that made the company what it is today. And the moment Jey’s brother Jimmy threw in the towel, you know it was one of the best of the year. It wasn’t a spot fest. It wasn’t a 50 minute back and forth Tokyo Dome classic. It was a story being told through the beauty of professional wrestling.” -Scott Edwards

“I think they had a lot going against them in the match, character-wise it’s heel vs. heel and even though there’s been some interference angles going on, it’s felt hollow like they’re only fighting because there’s this weird NXT/NXT UK show going on, Imperium haven’t really gotten that over even in the UK aside from Walter so the crowd was always going to be more in the favour of UE and then Wolf gets injured very early into the match so a lot of it has to be wrestled on the fly. Survivor Series was an utter disappointment for Walter fans to see him used so cheaply, but this was more on the money. He looked fantastic here and was booked to be the star of the match. Aichner and Axel also had their best outings in WWE so I think the match will do a lot for them too. Roddy and Kyle killed it as they always do too. Wild, gang warfare type match, I loved it.” -Ed Mills

“Ishii gets into the ring and goes nose to nose with Takagi who came to the ring before him, the bell rings and they lock up Ishii runs off the rope and comes at Shingo and neither man moves an inch. They begin trading forearms and then they start running into each other trying to take one another off of their feet. About two minutes into this match and it already ruled! Ishii takes Takagi to the ground while Ishii is still on his feet and Takagi challenges Ishii to kick him. Ishii delivers a kick to Takagi’s back and it brings Takagi to his feet. They make their way out to the floor and trade forearms on the outside. Shingo sends Tomohiro into the rail and back at Shingo and Shingo nails him with a lariat. There was no feeling out process these two just beat the shit out of each other. Shingo would get on top of Ishii on the ground and work on his neck (or the stump that his head is on) to get the advantage. Ishii would nail Takagi with a few forearms while being trapped in the corner before being sent down to one knee with a head butt from Shingo. Back in the center the two men began chopping each other each chop would fire them up and give them the energy to deliver more. Ishii would take Takagi over with a suplex, This match was a strong style showcase, with each guy not letting up on offense and both guys fighting through the pain that they were both in. At approximately 14 minutes into the match, Ishii would find himself on the mat almost gagging as he just got hit in the throat with a chop. Shingo overpowers Tomohiro and sends him over head with a wheelbarrow before hitting a sliding lariat to get a near fall. Shingo would catch Ishii coming off of the rope with a lariat and Ishii would get back up to nail Shingo with a lariat of his own. This match ruled! At the end of the match, Ishii would hit Takagi with the first and only vertical drop brainbuster of the match and the tournament to score the pinfall victory. This match was a war and it’s a match that all puro fans alike should seek out and watch!” -Nathan Neumann

“GCW is my home promotion. This match had a million twists and turns, with a nuclear hot crowd and excellent death match work. It was clearly building to something bigger, a rematch with Gage finally vanquishing RSP and 44.OH in front of an even more nuclear crowd. Instead, with Gage on the shelf and GCW unable to run hot packed shows, it stands out as the last great match of an era of east coast independent wrestling that I desperately hope can return some day soon.” -Jarrett Seidler

“My Open The Voice Gate co-host Case Lowe likes to say “In a hundred different universes, sadly, So-and-So exists in their worst one.” I don’t think that’s the situation for Dragongate’s Mr. February, Kzy. Since his first ever Open The Dream Gate match against Masaaki Mochizuki in February 2018, the former ultimate jobber Kzy has become one of the fifteen best wrestlers in the world, and also has had a Match of the Year quality championship match. I get that all out of the way to talk about the true star of this match, and Dragongate’s 2020 MVP, Naruki Doi.
As a singles wrestler, Naruki Doi’s legacy was defined by his underwhelming Open The Dream Gate reign from 2008 until 2010. At the peak of Dragongate’s western fandom, Doi was a champion with an incredibly long reign (the longest in company history to that point) that had incredibly underwhelming defenses against the likes of Akebono. His second Dream Gate run completely changed his narrative and was the foundation that Dragongate laid their 2020.
Naruki Doi was on constant attack for this Korakuen Hall defense, and that played into the best aspects of Kzy, the crowd’s connection to his resilience. Doi considered himself the touring world champion and Kzy the annoying regional challenger he wanted to put down with impunity. Doi unleashed an offensive never seen before in his matches, rocking Kzy with a curb stomp as he targeted the challenger’s neck. The Dream Gate champion capitalized on his work by putting Kzy down with an avalanche Doi 555s and the recently unsealed Muscular Bomb in front of a molten pre-COVID Korakuen crowd. Perhaps some of my memory is heightened by having that freedom in crowd response, but when considering everything else that put out this year, it was a clear choice in my top ten.” -Michael Spears

“Only fitting that the best match of 2020 featured two controversial/divisive wrestlers. Especially in a year of disillusionment and frustration with wrestling. However, I cannot deny the world-class talent of these men.
It was MCW’s top heel ‘Inimitable’ Dowie James vs. the international megastar Will Ospreay. ‘Fuck you Dowie’ cried the fans. They had an exhilarating back and forth with out of nowhere counters, quick as a hiccup flurries and big offensive bombs. The Hidden Blade counter into a submission was a popular gif on social media, but that was just one great move in a match that had plenty. The cherry on top was Dowie’s heel mannerisms throughout the contest as he oozed arrogance and his bursts of smooth technical transitions. It was a pro wrestling clinic and honestly, my match of the year.” -ScorpioCorp

Great story with Ospreay going for the first win over ZSJ, dominating in most aspects (power, striking, speed) and comfortably hanging with Zack’s grappling… but Zack ultimately countering to sneak the win with a submission he’d used to beat Will the year before. Add the fact it was mother fucking Ishii doing it and denying Jay White a spot in the G-1 Finals, oh so good. Rooting for Ishii to cut through all of White’s bullshit and get a victory is one of my personal highlights of the year. I love it so much. Ishii is someone I just want to root for, Jay White in this G-1 because of his antics was someone I just wanted to fall on his face. He got dropped on his head instead, I’ll take it!” -Jeri Evans

Tetsuya Endo vs. Daisuke Sasaki
11/3
DDT
Overall Points: 29

“The set up for this match goes all the way back to DDT is Coming to America where Tetsuya Endo cashed in his Right To Challenge gauntlet on Daisuke Sasaki after his match for the KO-D championship against Konosuke Takeshita. Endo easily beat the worn down Sasaki that night and stood triumphant in front of his new adopted home of New York. Through the early part of 2020, Endo was being set up big to regain his championship he had since lost. Gaining and losing the Saitama Super Arena sword, all seemed to be a big year for DDT and Endo. The pandemic quickly put a halt to this as Saitama was cancelled and DDT were forced to run weekly empty venue TV shows.
Endo made the best of this situation though as his in ring work was nothing but outstanding. He regained the belt from Masato Tanaka at Peter Pan in an empty arena, which should have been his big coronation as ace of Damnation. To get the boost he needed, he set out to challenging Kenny Omega to come back to DDT and face him, which Omega accepted. The pandemic put a stop to this as well since Omega could not make it over. So when Endo won the King of DDT tournament, questions were surrounding him about who he would select as his opponent for Ultimate Party.
He would choose the one person he needed to prove himself over to cement his status as ace of Damnation: Daisuke Sasaki. What started out as friendly rivalry between the two members quickly spiraled out of control with Sasaki deciding to kick Endo out of Damnation. Things didn’t go as planned for Charisma, as he himself was kicked out. Endo took the one thing that mattered to Sasaki and that was Damnation. Weeks went by with Sasaki violently attacking Endo with only Hiroshi Yamato standing by his side. This was now a blood feud.
The match itself had so much more weight behind it due to the build. It was high drama as Sasaki hurled his body at Endo without any caution to get back the one thing that mattered to him. Endo continually had to call off the rest of Damnation from interfering to prove himself better than Sasaki. Mad Paulie got involved and re-aligned himself with Sasaki. It was masterful storytelling combined with peak athleticism from two of the best wrestlers on DDT’s roster.
Ultimately, Endo prevailed over Sasaki. Sasaki had alluded to retiring if he lost and was set to do so during the post-match before Endo cut him off and reaccepted him into Damnation. Endo had done what he had done to push Sasaki to his limits and cause him to take the match seriously. Endo’s ego would only allow him to beat the best version of Sasaki as the one he beat at Coming to America was not. All of this aligned perfectly with both of their character traits. And to make sure we got the feel-good moment of the year, big Shuji Ishikawa made his DDT return to serenade everyone with a song and heal all wounds. Damnation stood tall at the end, ready to take over the wrestling world as the best faction going.” -BlastoSTG
