REAL WORLD TAG LEAGUE 2020
YOSHITATSU & RYOUJI SAI [4] DEF. PURPLE HAZE (SHIGEHIRO IRIE & IZANAGI) [2] (9:52)

Sai has a new ridiculous gimmick where he comes out with a mask then has a Guy Fawkes mask under it. The Yoshitatsu and Sai team come off as bored fortysomething midcarders. This was passable. Izanagi got worked over a lot then made the hot tag to Irie. Izanagi got to kick out of a few of Yoshitatsu’s moves before getting pinned by the Yoshitatsu Rhapsody. Nothing to go out of your way to see, but Izanagi again worked hard and the last couple of minutes were kind of fun with Izanagi trying to survive against Yoshitatsu. **3/4

REAL WORLD TAG LEAGUE 2020
TEAM ECW (MASATO TANAKA & TAJIRI) [6] DEF. ENFANTS TERRIBLES (SHOTARO ASHINO & KUMA ARASHI) [6] (6:48)

I know given the small field and the names involved that every team in this tournament was going to suffer a couple of losses. Enfants Terribles got big wins over Violent Giants and Nextream. So it’s not that big a deal they had to lose to Team ECW, but they didn’t need to be made to look like geeks in the loss.

The match started well with Ashino and Tanaka with a nice opening sequence. TAJIRI then got worked over but then came out the first kendo stick shot so TAJIRI could make the hot tag. Tanaka did some more good stuff against both Ashino and Arashi but with the referee’s back turned, Ashino took the kendo stick and hit TAJIRI with it, while Arashi went for a top-rope senton only to have Tanaka push Arashi off the top rope, hit a frog splash then a Sliding D for the pin. Total geeks. The only saving grace of this match was that Ashino and Tanaka showed they could have a great singles match. **1/2

REAL WORLD TAG LEAGUE 2020
JIN (JAKE LEE & KOJI IWAMOTO) [6] DEF. DAISUKE SEKIMOTO & ABDULLAH KOBAYASHI [6] (11:39)

Not the worst match ever, but too much Kobayashi. Sekimoto didn’t do too much to try to have a passable match either. Kobayashi missed a top-rope elbow drop and with the help of a Lee high kick, Iwamoto pinned Kobayashi with a Ground Cobra Twist. At least Iwamoto got a big win. Not much more to say about this one. **1/4

REAL WORLD TAG LEAGUE 2020
NETREAM (KENTO MIYAHARA & YUMA AOYAGI) [6] DEF. VIOLENT GIANTS (SUWAMA & SHUJI ISHIKAWA) [4] (24:17)

This match started off slow and very much showed how both Violent Giants have lost a step as they get up there in years. Lots of aimless brawling and choking from the Violent Giants. I have defended SUWAMA’s ability to work over someone for a while and still keep it interesting, but that was not the case here. But Nextream, especially Aoyagi, stepped up here as the match went on. Aoyagi showed some great fighting spirit here and his unwillingness to stay down infuriated SUWAMA so much, the Triple Crown champion started angrily pulling up the mats outside the ring and threw around a ring barrier in frustration after getting put in Aoyagi’s End Game submission and nearly passing out as Ishikawa and Miyahara were the legal men. It was a nice touch to put over Aoyagi’s effort in this match. The last third or so of the match that came down to Ishikawa versus Miyahara was great with lots of near falls and Aoyagi playing the ultimate partner that has your back.

Finish saw Aoyagi survive a chop barrage from SUWAMA and then hit a spin kick on both Violent Giants that allowed Miyahara to hit the Shutdown German Suplex on Ishikawa for the win. This ended up turning into one of the best matches of the tournament with a tremendous Aoyagi performance. He is definitely my MVP of the tournament so far, followed by Izanagi. While you could argue that Aoyagi should have gotten the fall for maximum effect, I think Aoyagi pinning one of the Violent Giants could be coming later if Nextream wins the Real World Tag League and then challenge for the World Tag titles. ***3/4

FINAL THOUGHTS

This would have been the weakest show of the Real World Tag League if not for the main event. The undercard was solid enough but only the opener I thought was a standout.
