“I know I’m the high man on this, but this checked all the boxes for me. The pacing was perfect for me, they had good entertaining exchanges throughout the match, and once the match beyond began this match went nuts. There was great high spots, awesome storytelling with a lot of threads being tied up, as well as new ones being made. There was also more than a little danger in a match with little to no blood. The moment both teams took one side of the double sided cage and walked to middle for one last sprint into battle gave me goosebumps. I loved this. My NXT/WWE MOTY.” -Steven Case

“Few wrestlers have pulled off final years like Ohata. She won the Regina Di WAVE title twice, retired with the belt, and put up a handful of match of the year contenders. You could make an argument for many of Ohata’s singles matches, but there is no denying that her bout with Yamashita was one of the best. Yamashita is one of the best power wrestlers in joshi, and Ohata was on such a roll in 2018, it may have been impossible for her to have a bad match with anyone. When two of the best go at it–especially when they’ve worked often before–it can be special. Anything less than a great match would have been a disappointment, but these two still exceeded expectations.” -Derek Tillotson

“A six way elimination match that nevertheless became a team match early on, this had everything you could posssibly want from a pro wrestling match, from the interfering heels to the corrupt refereeing to just great wrestling. Aja Kong was beastly as always, and Kaho Kobayashi at over 20 years her junior, put in a star making performance for the entire fifty 50 minutes. The match built up to an emotional climax of pure wrestling theatre.” -Ewan Cameron

“The “Fluorescent Light Tubes & Symbolic Weapon Three Way Tag Team Death Match” match I attended at Korakuen Hall was one of my absolute favorite live matches. “Shingo Takagi is currently slotted as a “power junior” in New Japan’s junior heavyweight division. He won’t be there long. Can he hang with heavyweights? Just watch him have this absolute belter with Ishikawa who is taller by about almost 20cm and outweighs him by about 35 kilos. This match was held on the second last night of the Champion Carnival but to me it was the main event of the whole tournament. I was fortunate enough to be there live and sitting with rabid Shingo and Ishikawa fans on either side of me. These two gave me a near 20 minute All Japan experience that could be held up there with anything Misawa, Tenryu, Suwama or Kobashi had done in this company’s illustrious history. At 42 years old, it’s amazing how often Ishikawa can still bang one out when needed. Shingo was an absolute beast here and he will be a fine addition to the New Japan heavyweight scene in due time.” -WH Park

“If you’re reading this, there’s a strong possibility that you don’t watch Marvelous. You may have never *heard* of Marvelous. It’s a young promotion, founded by joshi legend Chigusa Nagayo. She brings in wrestlers from a variety of other promotions, but has her own crew, as well. And that includes two of her recent trainees, Mei Hoshizuki and Mikoto Shindo. And in Marvelous’s final show of 2018, Hoshizuki got paired with one of Marvelous’s top wrestlers, while Shindo was paired with one of SEAdLINNNG’s best. And the result was magical. On one hand, you had two rookies acting like grizzled veterans trying hard to murder each other, hot off a one-on-one time limit draw just one week earlier. On the other, you have Iroha and Yoshiko, two of the best talents in joshi. This match was the perfect summary of the great year Marvelous had and a fantastic preview of what’s to come. If you’ve never watched Marvelous, this is one of the best matches to start with, because it’s one of the promotion’s best, period.” -Derek Tillotson

If you can watch this match and come out of it thinking that Shimizu isn’t a serious prospect for the Japanese wrestling scene, then we can’t be friends. I ate this up and even when I was full I wanted more. My only knock is that Ben-K felt a little underutilized. Other than that, this was balls to the wall action, fantastic counters and reversals, and a star-making performance for Shimizu. There was one botched spot, which makes me think Ben-K might have had some issues in this match, but man oh man did I forget about that until quite a bit after the match ended.” -Brad Garoon

“This match was incredible. In 2018 Ciampa was over as a legitimate hated heel and everything he touched turned to wrestling gold. He was totally in Black’s head here, something we hadn’t seen happen when Black has faced anyone else (except Sullivan to some extent). Because of that and because Ciampa was also in Johnny Gargano’s head, he was able to manipulate his way the title. I had a knee jerk reaction to knock off a bit for all the gaga at the end, but as I’m writing this I realize that it absolutely made the match better. “Stardom’s ace, Io Shirai, was only out of the company for a few minutes when Momo Watanabe claimed her spot at the top of the company’s pecking order. The 18-year-old Watanabe and her former teammate Jungle Kyona were given the nearly-impossible task of following Shirai’s farewell match, in front of one of Stardom’s largest crowds in years. The match continued an amazing in-ring year for Watanabe and was another dramatic feat for Kyona. There are few wrestlers who have such natural chemistry with one another, and both women stole the show. Kyona has proven time and again that she’s one of the best babyfaces in wrestling. Meanwhile, Watanabe may lack Kyona’s obvious charisma, but she carries herself with an unmatched confidence. Between their history, opposing personalities, and in-ring compatibility, there’s not a single bad thing I can say about the way these two work together. “This isn’t a match I expect to see on anyone else’s lists unless any other contributors happened to see it live. I suspect if I watched the VOD of it, it wouldn’t hold up, it would be a basically entertaining but wildly overbooked and deeply flawed tag scramble. In the room, live, it felt like fucking magic. You could break the booking down rationally and rip the shit out of, from the zany comedy that dominated the early stages to all the mad plot twists crammed into the end, the way that promoter Martin Zaki booked himself as hero against the menacing Schadenfreude stable, culminating in Mark Davis turning last minute on his partner Jonah Rock to join Schadenfreude in a barely coherent swerve. But the crowd were madly into all of it and I felt exhilarated in a way that a live pro wrestling match has never made me feel, just sort of pounded into submission by the relentlessness of the action. And it WAS all action, with the focus of the match pinballing manically from Pete Dunne and Millie McKenzie’s mismatched, adorkable tag team antics to Jordan Devlin and Jinny interfering and eliminating them from the match, to Schadenfreude running amok at ringside, to Martin Zaki’s first in ring appearance in seven years, to Mark Davis’ turn, to Jonah Rock’s defiant last stand. Beat after beat after beat hit the mark. We were all along for the journey. It just felt like a wonderful communal experience; I went with my then girlfriend, her first ever wrestling show, and as we walked back to the hotel we enthused about how we needed to go to the next one. I know that sounds like one of those ‘definitely didn’t happen’ moments, you take a girl with no interest in pro wrestling to a show and she comes out thinking it’s the coolest thing in the world, but honestly, honestly, it did. I can’t justify putting this match in first place when, technically, I suspect it’s the weakest match of the top ten, but in terms of pure emotion I think that’s where it would be. Just a perfect experience.” -Jack Stevenson

“This was not your typical PWG tag match by any means. The closest comparison one could give it to was like watching a 90’s AJPW tag match. A slowburner of a match with hard-hitting action that was layered with storytelling in multiple aspects, building to the crescendo and finish.
Each team was facing their respective partner the following night in the first round of the tournament, resulting in this fascinating dynamic of fighting the opposite team with your soon-to-be-enemy that was subtly build throughout. Plus you had the already storied history of Dragunov and Walter erupting in the match. And right from the onset, Takagi wanted a piece of Walter too, trying to derail his attention from Dragunov at any chance he got. Not to mention the sheer fact you had four of the most intense men in all of wrestling in one ring together.
Even post-match, it continued. With the tag match out of the way, both teams quickly turned focus to the next night. Walter and Thatcher shared some words and Dragunov and Takagi postured and stared down each other.
Just a beautiful match in every way, from the moment the teams entered, to the moment they left. This had it all.” -Daniel DeMarco

“A daring venture by a company coming off a completely dead in the water title reign with Katsuhiko Nakajima, they approached their first match in the new era with a completely different approach. This time we would see the new champion defend against a rookie, fresh faced from his North American excursion, just returned with new hair and a new attitude, calling back to the days of old with his green attire and use of many legacy moves of the founder of the company, Mitsuharu Misawa. Now that alone would be awesome actually, but what made it even better was that it was the perfect foil for the champion, who loudly proclaimed the old era of NOAH to be dead, and to lead the current company back to Budokan Hall in HIS own way. Kiyomiya represented the purity of NOAH as many believed it should stay, while Kenou had a new styling that he wanted to implement as the face of the company. Things ended dramatically and yet perfectly with Kenou putting the youngster down firmly with a KO finish, both legitimizing Kenou as champion, having a unique finish, and providing you with an excellent lead-in to their match a year later with how things played out.” -Dylan Fox

“CIMA and #STRONGHEARTS had a really fun run in DDT during their second half of the year, with his singles match against DDT’s young ace at their big Peter Pan show being the highlight. Over the past couple of years so many wrestlers (especially wrestlers in a company that rhymes with “pew napan”) have gotten limb work so very wrong, with matches that are built around working over a body part for 20+ minutes only for the wrestler in question to shake off the limb work down the stretch and/or continue hitting their running knee strike or giant leaping dropkick with the same perfection as always. Here Takeshita showed them how to do a damn limb match, selling the leg perfectly for the entire contest and even having it factor into the finish, with Takeshita favoring his leg and showing that was why he was ultimately unable to get out of the way of the final Meteora from CIMA. “I was there for this match and it is, without a doubt, the best match I’ve ever seen live. Each team strung together tag team maneuvers one after another, fluidly and effectively with no waste in motion. The nearfalls had everyone in the crowd leaping out of their seats, and my friend turned to me at one point and said, “What the fuck is going on!?” and I replied, “I think we’re watching the best match we’ve ever seen.” -Lawson Leong

“An epic clash between two of the best. There’s a great amount of stiffness, and the energy and crowd reaction was unreal.” -aguakun
