One of my favorite parts of running New Japan Pro Wrestling pick’em contests—and trust me, there aren’t many parts I like—is sifting through the huge numbers of picks that come through and seeing how the general population believes the tournament will go down. At the time of this writing, 158 entries have come through all with vastly different ideas of who will win which block, who will win individual matches and surprisingly enough, who will win the 2016 Best of the Super Juniors.

Often, we reside in our bubbles where the result of a tournament or even an individual match seems so obvious to us. Yet, there exists a vast network of fans who have radically different ideas of how things could or will go down. This diversity of opinions makes tournaments and pick’em games like this so much fun. The very fact that 11 of the 16 BoSJ participants were predicted to win the whole thing shows this vast mélange of opinions, thoughts and predictions.
Here are some notable statistics and predictions going into tomorrow night’s Best of the Super Juniors kickoff:

%

Will Ospreay

The heaviest favorite in any individual match was Will Ospreay’s opening weekend tilt versus Nick Jackson. Of course, Jackson is injured and will be replaced by fellow Bullet Club member Chase Owens, but regardless of who’s in that spot, Ospreay is a 98.7% favorite to win. Even before he was announced as injured, Nick has garnered only two picks from our 158 entries. Now that Owens is in the spot, it’s a mortal lock Ospreay wins.

%

Jushin Thunder Liger

%

Volador Jr

The closest matchup at the time of this writing is the May 27th match between Jushin Thunder Liger and CMLL’s representative in this year’s tournament, the dynamic Volador Jr. This is interesting because Volador isn’t a heavy favorite in most of his matches and is projected (via our predictors) to score between 6-8 points for the tournament. Yet, 50.3% of our participants have him beating Liger in the Thunder God’s 25th overall Best of the Super Juniors tournament.

%

Draw

Unsurprisingly, the match with the highest percentage to result in a draw is the opening night rematch between KUSHIDA and Kyle O’Reilly. The two faced off in last year’s finals, a match I personally voted #1 in our annual Match of the Year ballot, it finished ninth. While draws are not a frequent happening in the Best of the Super Juniors tournament, you can make a reasonable case for both this match as well as Ricochet/Will Ospreay (our 2nd highest draw percentage match). A draw not only protects both from taking a loss so early in the tournament, it could also build yet another rematch down the line, presumably for KUSHIDA’s IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

KUSHIDA

%

Matt Sydal

BUSHI is the current favorite to emerge from the B Block but the field is wide open with O’Reilly and KUSHIDA both on his heels. Matt Sydal surprisingly nabbed 5.7% of the predictions to win the Block while Ryusuke Taguchi received one lone vote (presumably from his mother).

Bobby Fish

This is no surprise to anyone who follows NJPW but European high-flier Will Ospreay is a runaway favorite to win the B Block. What is surprisingly though is how many other participants have been selected for this spot. This could be some creative balloting from our pick’em contestents looking to gain a massive advantage should Ospreay NOT win. Or, there are legitimately 0.6% of you that think either Nick Jackson/Chase Owens or Beretta will win the Block.

Best of the Super Juniors Champion

  • Will Ospreay 49% 49%
  • BUSHI 18.5% 18.5%
  • Kyle O’Reilly 17.8% 17.8%

49% of our pick’em participants have Ospreay winning the B Block as well as the whole shebang. I was a little surprised to see this number so high while Los Ingobernables member BUSHI has only 18.5 of the vote with O’Reilly coming in third just below BUSHI at 17.8%. The biggest shock is the wide number of wrestlers who were also selected to win the entire tournament: KUSHIDA, Gedo (!), Volador Jr., Ricochet, Jushin Thunder Liger, Bobby Fish, Ryusuke Taguchi and Matt Sydal ALL have at least one person rooting for them to win the whole tournament. As awesome as Gedo running through the tournament and winning would be… it’s likely not going to happen but hey, dream big and dream fearlessly!
