NJPW G1 Climax 25

Welcome to Night 11 of the 2015 NJPW G1 Climax tournament, with tonight’s action coming from the A Block! Tetsuya Naito. Kota Ibushi. Main Event. LET’S DO THIS!

Also, the NOAH Global Junior League finishes up at the same time, so we may have some updates on that throughout. Poor Sho Tanaka is eliminated from contention, much to the chagrin of everyone. That’s right. Everyone chagrins.

Quick plug, if you’re unaware, Voices of Wrestling has been doing daily recap videos during the G1 tournament this year. I put together clips from the shows, go over the results, run down the standings, and look ahead to future shows on the VOW YouTube! It’s a quick recap for those who are falling behind, want to make sure they don’t miss anything, or just want to get into NJPW without devoting 3 hours a day to each G1 show. If you watch them, feel free to send feedback!

Tiger Mask is hurt, still with a lingering neck issue, so he was removed from the event. Thus, the opening 8-man tag is now an opening 6-man tag.

Yuji Nagata & Satoshi Kojima & Yohei Komatsu vs Michael Elgin & Hirooki Goto & Mascara Dorada

On Friday, Michael Elgin will battle Yuji Nagata, while Hirooki Goto will take on Satoshi Kojima, so this 6-man tag featured the preview for both of those matches. This was quickly paced when Dorada was in, which wasn’t long. Otherwise, it was a display for Michael Elgin more than anything. Elgin showed off his power against both of the heavyweights on the opposing side, while getting the crowd steadily involved in his big spots. Yohei Komatsu, as he is prone to do, took the fall, with Mascara Dorada continuing the trend of non-G1 competitors getting wins in the multi-man tags. A fun opener with the crowd involved, which is a good sign for the rest of this crowd. I’m quite hyped to see what Ibushi vs Naito looks like in front of this crowd, while also being presented on NJPW World in with just a single hard camera and no commentary. ***

Karl Anderson & Cody Hall of Bullet Club vs Tomoaki Honma & Jay White

I feel like I’ve seen the same exact counter to Anderson’s Gun Stun more times than I’ve actually seen a Gun Stun land in this tournament. I don’t know if that’s a good thing. Especially when that’s the first thing I think of in the same match that also featured the master of the failed Kokeshi, Tomoaki Honma. Cody Hall did well for himself in this one, despite being noticeably losta couple of times. This basic tag affair ended when Karl Anderson landed not one, but two Gun Stuns on Jay White to finally put him down. I was a bit surprised they had young lion Jay White kick out of Anderson’s finish, especially in a tournament where Anderson has been built up as a tough beat, but I guess the Gun Stun isn’t all that important to get over at this point. **1/2

Shinsuke Nakamura & Tomohiro Ishii vs Yujiro Takahashi & Tama Tonga of Bullet Club

Tomohiro Ishii is in Friday’s Night 12 main event against Kazuchika Okada, while Shinsuke Nakamura next takes on his tag opponent tonight, Yujiro Takahashi. Tama Tonga had been on the winning side in six of his last seven tag matches of the tour, getting the pins himself in several of them. Winning tonight, however, would prove to be quite difficult. Tomohiro Ishii and Shinesuke Nakamura flat out destroyed Tama Tonga in a closing stretch that put the miracle run of Tonga to bed, with Ishii pinning Tonga after a brainbuster. Ishii worked most of the match in an obvious effort to protect Nakamura, as Shinsuke only got in briefly at the start and then some more in the closing stretch. Combined with the lack of Nakamura was a surplus of Yujiro, so I just couldn’t get into the match that well. The closing destruction of Tonga, though, was much fun. **1/2

Kazuchika Okada & Gedo & YOSHI-HASHI vs Ryusuke Taguchi & KUSHIDA & Captain New Japan

The dropkick, the elbow drop, and the Rainmaker. The winning sequence for Kazuchika Okada as he pinned Captain New Japan to gain the victory for CHAOS in the main event of the undercard. A solid match, especially with quality performances from KUSHIDA and YOSHI-HASHI. KUSHIDA was the recipient of the hot tag late in the match, after being kept out of the ring for almost the entirety. When the Jr Heavyweight Champion finally entered, he went nuts. Maybe too much so, as he took everyone out at first but then was caught and kept out of the ring for the remainder of the match, as Captain New Japan was left all alone to die. Well, get beat. Not die. That’d be too harsh. ***

It is intermission now, and when we return… G1 A Block matches!

G1 Climax 25

Bad Luck Fale (6) vs Hiroyoshi Tenzan (2)

Fale has found a new finisher, and that finisher is dropping from a great height and going splat onto his opponent. The High Fale Flow onto Tenzan delivered the win for the Bullet Club’s Bad Luck Fale, getting the big man to 8 points and proving still, beyond a doubt, that the NWA World Heavyweight Championship is a poor prize. Did you even remember that Tenzan is the current NWA Champion? Did you even remember that the NWA is still a thing? By the way, check out NWAClassics.com! Wink, smiley emoji. **

P.S.: Don’t bash The Underboss on the Interwebs.

Katsuyori Shibata (8) vs Toru Yano (2)

When Shibata bursted out to an A Block lead, reigning atop solely after Night 9, you knew a big letdown loss was on the way. Well, here it was. Yano got a flash pinfall victory over Shibata, just as it looked like Shibata was going to make quick work of the master thief. The crowd was audibly surprised, with Yano’s win coming in just four minutes. It’s the type of loss that fits Shibata perfectly, as he chokes in big tournaments despite many well wishers continuing to predict his fortune. Shibata’s loss allows others later in the card a chance to catch up to his point total, totally changing the face of the A Block in one fell swoop. **1/4

Hiroshi Tanahashi (6) vs Doc Gallows (2)

The first to catch up to Shibata, Hiroshi Tanahashi, pulled out a solid performance from Doc Gallows. Count me as a guilty one just wishing for the two main events to come quick, failing to give Tanahashi vs Gallows a shot at really entertaining me to any extent. I JUST WANTED MY CANDY, and my candy was Naito vs Ibushi. You can’t get your candy without eating your meat, though, so I had to stuff some Doc Gallows in my mouth. Let’s pause for the inappropriateness to escape, and we’ll move on. Gallows vs Tanahashi was nothing more than anyone would expect it to be, proving a solid win for Tanahashi as he gets back atop the A Block on his way to big matches with Shibata and Styles in the coming days. **3/4

AJ Styles (6) vs Togi Makabe (6)

When AJ Styles goes for the Styles Clash, and the New Japan audiences immediately fear death for his opponent, it’s amazing to watch. The crowd had been great all night, but really came alive to a higher level during the semi-final here. Togi Makabe and AJ Styles both came in with 6 points, and a Styles win would move him atop the Block due to his tiebreaker win over Shibata earlier in the tournament. That’s what would happen, as Styles pinned Makabe in the best match of the night so far with the Styles Clash. Like many of Styles matches this tournament, they feel like they go super quick. Action from beginning to end. ***3/4

Kota Ibushi (6) vs Tetsuya Naito (6)

Naito has just been such a stellar… surprise? Breath of fresh air? I have to believe most have been surprised with just how well Naito has performed during the tournament. Not so much in the ring, as Naito has been good for a while. But this new character development, which he has owned and just dived head first into, has been great and needed. From taking his sweet time to remove his entrance suit, to picking and choosing his spots when to care about how the crowd reacts to him, to coming alive in the ring at the right times, Naito has been amazing. He’s in my Top 5 performers of the tournament so far, and this match only helped his case. Oh, and Kota Ibushi has been fantastic, too, but I went in expecting him to be. Both men delivered, and each having this main event match was well deserved.

https://twitter.com/SenorLARIATO/status/628902152421904384

From the slaps and forearm attacks, to the counters, to the neck breaking moves employed by both men, this match had almost everything. It’s about the best atmosphere NJPW can get across on TV, too, with a single camera presentation. In the end, Tetsuya Naito continued his own remarkable run in the G1, defeating Kota Ibushi with a rolling kick followed by his new Destino finisher. The crowd was a little surprised, it seemed, at Naito getting the win in the main event. We shouldn’t be surprised much anymore, because Naito quite possibly is making a mad dash to the finals. ****1/4

As we look at the standings in the A Block, now after 6 days of action for the group, we see a log jam at the top with five men at 8 points. Really, the only one of the five unlikely to get to the finals is Fale, but I could see any of the other four getting out of Block A. If Nakamura is going to win B Block, I see a big case for having someone other than Styles winning the A, as a Styles vs Nakamura match doesn’t seem likely right now. It’s an interesting race in the A Block, one I’ll be watching closely! We’ll see you all back on Friday for Night 12 of this year’s G1 Climax here at Voices of Wrestling!
