Another weekend gone by, more sad news. On Friday, the wrestling world learned about the death of a WWE Hall of Famer, while on Saturday, Northeast Wrestling delivered fans an international dream tag team match.

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper dies at 61 (July 31)

On Friday, TMZ broke the news that Roddy Piper had died from cardiac arrest. The news spread quickly, while emotions of all kinds poured out from those on Twitter, wrestlers over the weekend at various shows, and even Ronda Rousey at UFC 190. Outlets from all over covered the Piper death, with comments from various superstars of the past and current wrestling journalists included. This week on Shake Them Ropes, we were already scheduled to discuss Roddy Piper vs Greg Valentine from Starrcade 1983 as part of our WWE Network Top 100 Matches countdown. Now, not only will we be discussing that match, but also our memories of Piper throughout his career.

 

Young Bucks vs Rey Mysterio & Alberto El Patron (August 1)

On Saturday, Northeast Wrestling presented a tag team dream main event at Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, NY, featuring The Young Bucks against AAA’s Rey Mysterio, Jr. and Alberto El Patron (Alberto Del Rio). Over 1,000 fans attended the event, with the results below.

Jimmy Snuka diagnosed with stomach cancer (August 2)

In an online video, 1Wrestling.com’s Bill Apter spoke with the wife of Jimmy Snuka. In the conversation, they discuss memories of Roddy Piper, while also discussing Jimmy Snuka’s recent diagnosis of stomach cancer. Snuka underwent surgery over the weekend in which doctors believe the cancer was removed fully.

 

Dreamwave Wrestling Adversity (August 1)

In LaSalle, Illinois, on Saturday night, Matt Cage and Christian Rose defeated Zero Gravity to win the Dreamwave Tag Team Championships. Headlining the event, Marshe Rockett defeated Tommaso Ciampa to retain their Heavyweight title. Kevin Nash was on hand for the show, also, and you can check out full results at PWPonderings!

 

NJPW G1 Climax (August 1 & 2)

NJPW returned after a two day absence with Night 8 and Night 9 of this year’s G1 Climax. Shinsuke Nakamura, after suffering an elbow injury, returned to action for the first time since last weekend on the shows. Also, Michael Elgin is impressing many onlookers with his fantastic tournament showing so far.
