No Bauer & Pollock this week again. Also, probably no column next week due to the holidays. I really don’t know why podcasts don’t take a week off, but I guess we need to hear Ted Fowler on Thanksgiving. The podcast week in review, brought to you by Man Grates.

They Said It…

  • “You know what’s a real panty dropper? Amazing Grace.” – Bobcat Goldthwait on using the bagpipes to pick up chicks
  • “I’d rather be broke than be Floyd Mayweather.” – Bill Goldberg

The Usual Suspects

Talk n’ Shop (11/15/14): Just Karl and Rocky this week, and the whole show is basically about burping and farting, complete with genuine burps and farts. Includes a lengthy discussion about passing gas in the ring, and a great story about Rocky repeatedly cutting one during the final suplex of the Three Amigos. If you couldn’t tell, this won’t be the most mature podcast you’ll listen to this week, but it’s probably the funniest. THUMBS UP

MLW Radio (11/16/14): Konnan, Court, and MSL get together to run down the current events in TNA, WWE, and Lucha Underground in a decent discussion. I liked Konnan’s honest explanation of his physical appearance on the show. The episodes have been a bit shorter lately, clocking in at around an hour for the last few weeks – not sure if it’s a case of increased responsibilities for Lucha Underground or a shift to put more content on the VIP section. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Piper’s Pit (11/10/14): Comedian and director Bobcat Goldthwait drops by to chat with Roddy about the bagpipes, Andy Kaufman, directing, tasteless jokes, and bombing on stage. Bobcat’s genuinely funny here and plays very well off of Piper. The story of setting fire to the Tonight Show is the highlight. THUMBS UP

Who’s Next With Goldberg (11/18/14): Bill is joined again by Mauro Ranallo and Frank Shamrock to shoot the breeze, talk wrestling, and the glory days of Pride. All three are clearly having a lot of fun, but the show wears out its welcome fairly soon, which is saying something since it’s fairly short at under an hour. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Steve Austin Show (11/18/14): Another Austin audio commentary, this time on his match vs. Bret Hart from Wrestlemania XIII. The match is among the most historically significant and greatest matches in company history, and you learn lots of great tidbits, from Austin debating the finish with Vince, Bret blading Austin, the role of the commentary, and what Austin would have done differently. A great use of the medium, and make sure you cue up the video to go along with the podcast for maximum effect. THUMBS UP

Talk is Jericho (11/19/14): Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash is the guest this week, but the conversation is mainly about horror movies and Slash’s new band with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. It’s pleasant and all, but for God’s sake, how do you interview Slash and not talk about G n’ R! Thankfully they at least get to it in part 2, but there’s not much to Part 1 unless you’re a diehard Slash fan. <Slash’s interview starts at 24:00> THUMBS DOWN

The Ross Report (11/12/14): Matt and Jeff Hardy talk to JR about starting out, their days as enhancement talent, the TLC matches, TNA, and getting sober. I liked the two-parter they did with Jericho more, but Matt and Jeff have had almost literally done it all, and taken on its own this is a fun show. THUMBS UP

Art of Wrestling (11/20/14): Danny Davis (The Nightmare, not the referee) is the guest this week. He doesn’t much get into his actual career, mainly focusing on breaking into the business and setting up OVW and training a ton of guys. But you get an interesting perspective from someone who’s been in the business almost 40 years. Just make sure you get the full 73 minute version, and not the truncated 47 minute one that originally downloaded. THUMBS UP

Steve Austin – Unleashed (11/20/14): Bill Apter talks to Steve about the magazine business, the Von Erichs, Andy Kaufman, Billy Graham, his upcoming book, and a lot more. The story about Bill’s backyard wrestling days (and the painful reversal to the figure four) is awesome. Apter comes across as the nicest guy in the world and Austin is obviously having a blast. THUMBS UP & BEST OF THE WEEK

Jim Cornette Experience (11/20/14): Part 2 with Lance Russell, as they go over Dave Brown, Lawler vs. Dundee, the Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl, and Empty Arena match, and a lot more. Lance is great here, and Cornette actually does a great job spouting history and directing the conversation. A great show for any fan of Memphis history. <Russell’s interview starts at 20:08> THUMBS UP

Talk is Jericho (11/21/14): Part 2 with Slash. They thankfully get more into rock and roll, from Guns n’ Roses, playing while wasted, the process of making a set list, and the acts Slash has worked with post G n’ R. Then they also talk about dinosaurs for an extended period of time. And as always, skip the terrible comedy segment with Egypt that’s predictably awful. <Slash’s interview starts at 20:54> THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE
