No Bauer & Pollock this week as of writing. The podcast week in review, brought to you by Hulu Plus.
They Said It…
- “I wanted to let Bobby Eaton beat me on his birthday on a house show in the middle of the streak” – Bill Goldberg on birthday presents
- “That and a couple of episodes of Archer on my TV have the diamond next to them. They are not to be erased.” – Dolph Ziggler on saving the episode of Raw where he won the World Title
- “Is it obvious I just don’t know women?” – Colt Cabana
The Usual Suspects
Talk n’ Shop (11/1/14):Karl farts on air very early on in the episode, which sets the tone for the next thirty minutes. That about sums it up. THUMBS UP
MLW Radio (11/2/14): Court, Konnan, and MSL briefly run down some current events, but the meat of the show is a variety of goofy topics, like Randy Savage’s song on the WCW Mayhem: The Music CD and an extended remembrance of the XWF. A takedown of Michael Hayes’ new single about children praying in schools is the highlight. THUMBS UP
Piper’s Pit (11/3/14): UFC founder Art Davie is the guest this week. At least, that’s the theory, as Podcast One uploaded last week’s show with Jesse Ventura and it took them the better part of a day to fix it. Why does this stuff always happen to Piper? The show itself is actually fun, all thanks to Art, who in addition to some great anecdotes about the early days of UFC, knew a ton of details about Piper’s wrestling career. THUMBS UP
Who’s Next With Goldberg (11/4/14): Josh Barnett joins Bill to talk wrestling and fighting in Japan. There are a lot of cool tidbits like Barnett discussing how wrestling in NJPW made him a better fighter and working a match with chicken pox. Bill even talks about his time wrestling in Japan and puts over Yuji Nagata for teaching him so much. The latter half of the show features movie talk, highlighted by Bill’s feud with the reindeer on the set of Santa’s Sleigh. The car talk at the end is a snooze, but this is about as engaging as Bill gets. THUMBS UP
Steve Austin Show (11/4/14): Steve takes phone calls for the whole show, and has some interesting tidbits about the supermarket brawl with Booker T and a Buried Alive match with the Undertaker. But Steve’s poor memory of his career and sycophantic callers keep this from being a thumbs up. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE
Talk is Jericho (11/5/14): Jericho plays a Fozzy song, plugs his book, and talks to a guy from Avenged Sevenfold about his band’s new video game (?). Thankfully the bulk of the show is a great Dolph Ziggler interview. He’s joined by traveling buddy WWE Doctor Chris Amman, but most of the interview is solo Dolph talking about holding the World title for 5 minutes, being Chavo’s caddy, and getting claustrophobic in his first Elimination Chamber. <Dolph’s interview starts at 34:56> THUMBS UP
The Ross Report (11/5/14): JR talks to JJ Dillon about his wrestling time, his shot working at MSG, how he fit into the Horseman and why it wouldn’t work today, thoughts on Vince Senior and Junior, and Sting’s possible role in the WWE. Dillon has made the rounds on other podcasts, so you’ve probably heard a few of these stories, but he remains an articulate guest who has had an expansive career both in and out of the ring. <Dillon’s interview starts at 23:53> THUMBS UP
Art of Wrestling (11/6/14): Colt talks to female independent wrestler and current SHIMMER champion Nicole Matthews about her career. There’s not a lot to the first half of the interview, but things pick up a bit when they discuss intergender matches and Nicole’s time in Wrestlicious (including having a manager who didn’t know wrestling wasn’t real). THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE
Steve Austin – Unleashed (11/6/14): Steve rants about flies for the intro, and then answers viewer mail for the remainder of the show. All sorts of topics are discussed, from going bald to the Expendables to the downsides of wearing gray t-shirts. It’s decent enough radio, but I worry given Stone Cold’s busy reality schedule if shows like these are the norm from now on. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE
Jim Cornette Experience (11/6/14): A long intro this week sees Jim ranting about Republicans, and this was before they knew the election results! Skip ahead to the interview with Teddy Long, which breezes through his career as a referee, manager, and GM, with lots of great stories about James Brown, being the ref for the Droz/D’Lo match, Steve Blackman killing a rat (the rodent kind) with his bare hands, and having Mae Young as his lawyer during wrestler’s court. <Long’s interview starts at 29:08> THUMBS UP
Talk is Jericho (11/7/14):More from Ziggler, as he recounts his concussions, the Spirit Squad, comedy, and the origin of the Dolph Ziggler name. Doc Amman chips in with a funny story about taking bumps from Goldust. Before that, Chris is joined by his doctor neighbor who discusses the Ebola virus in what turns out to be an interesting and informative segment. <Dolph’s interview starts at 33:40> THUMBS UP & BEST OF THE WEEK
