Outlier

Como Estaz: The Cubs Fan and Rob Viper have returned to Mexico and brought back their podcast to commemorate their journey. The two provide almost daily podcasts to detail all the lucha outings they’re attending, from the enormous (the CMLL Anniversary show on 9/19) to shows like a random all mini’s card. The show doubles as travelogue & wrestling recap, with lots of great stories about long bus rides with luchadors, visiting the Triple A offices, and having lunch with Flamita (full disclosure – I’m friends with both Rob and Cubs, but these are still great listens).

The Usual Suspects

Talk n’ Shop (9/6/14): Cheerleader Melissa joins Rocky and Karl to talk breaking in with Rocky and all her trips to Japan. They talk to her for a bit and then go right to the mailbag. Melissa has done as much as any female indy wrestler, and it would have been nice to hear more from her. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

MLW Radio (9/14/14): Ed Ferrera & Disco Inferno join MSL to talk about their time on the WCW booking committee. The two have a very high opinion of the show they were putting out, and a lot of people will vehemently disagree with what they think makes a good wrestling show, but it’s still a very interesting look behind the curtain during a turbulent time in wrestling. THUMBS UP

Piper’s Pit (9/15/14): Roddy is joined by the “Gangrel” (seriously, that’s how he’s billed in the show description). Gangrel has some good tales about breaking in, the origin of the Blackhearts, and a confrontation with Ric Flair in Australia. Unfortunately, Len Denton and Piper’s son are also present, and everyone talking at once makes for a tough listen at points. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Who’s Next With Goldberg (9/16/14): Bill is joined by NFL Hall of Famer John Randle. Randle is an enthusiastic guest and he has some decent stories, but it’s definitely a skippable show. It’s fascinating how much Bill seems to identify himself as a football player when he found the most success and fame in wrestling by far, a subject he seemingly wants nothing to do with. THUMBS DOWN

Steve Austin Show (9/16/14): Kevin Nash joins the show to talk all sorts of thing, from uber facts to toilet paper to how often he and Steve have sex (with their wives, not each other). Zero wrestling talk. Some people have enjoyed this one, I found it akin to overhearing a conversation you aren’t that interested in. THUMBS DOWN

Talk is Jericho (9/17/14): Matt and Jeff Hardy join the show in part 1 of a 2 part interview. They talk about their childhoods and how they got into wrestling, and great stories about Manny Fernandez booking himself on an OMEGA show and working squashes against Scott Hall and Nikolai Volkoff. Very fun show. THUMBS UP & BEST OF THE WEEK

The Ross Report (9/17/14): Bill Watts is on the show for a lengthy interview. The parts about older wrestling are great, especially the explanation about why Mid-South was never a member of the NWA and Bill’s trials and tribulations at WCW & WWF. The discussion about modern wrestling is less fun, and Ross just uses the opportunity to hammer home his usual points, like Brock Lesnar not needing to be on TV every week and the need for time limits. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Bauer & Pollock (9/17/14): Some good discussion this week about the WON HOF and an extended bit about the TNA article on Grantland and the company’s future. THUMBS UP

Art of Wrestling (9/18/14): A live show from Cleveland featuring John Thorne, Eddie Kingston, Colin Delaney, Johnny Gargano, and Cliff Compton (along with a Tracy Smother cameo and Rhyno and Tyson Dux in the intro). This is actually a fun live show and the guests are all lively, the highlight being Gargano’s recount of his trip to Singapore and almost becoming a gum smuggler. The audio isn’t the best, but it’s definitely listenable. THUMBS UP

Steve Austin – Unleashed 9/18/14): Steve answers listener questions (none of which are all that entertaining) and cuts promos on a variety of people. Includes a bizarre segment detailing Steve’s conversation with the Loch Ness Monster. THUMBS DOWN

Jim Cornette Experience (9/18/14): Jim and Alice talk to Sean Wheelock about his book about the first UFC show. The topic is interesting, and there’s plenty of wrestling talk and its ties to MMA, including a story of Jim being in a battle royal with a young Ken Shamrock. Make sure you go right to the interview though, as the intro has more about Russo and why Alice stopped reviewing RAW on her podcast. And if you are a subscriber to MLW VIP, this week’s Cornette premium show is great, with lengthy discussions on psychology and what the name “Nature Boy” means. THUMBS UP

Talk is Jericho (9/19/14): Part 2 with the Hardy Boyz, this time detailing their tag team splits, singles runs, drug issues, TNA, and more in another open and honest interview. Plus Jericho’s daughters show up to review books and it’s actually kind of adorable. THUMBS UP
